I've got a Toshiba HD-A30 hooked up to an InFocus ScreenPlay 4805 by way of component video and audio is sent out via HDMI to a Sony 720. When I put a DVD in, the screen goes black but the audio works fine. I've looked at the setup menu, but everything looks ok. It appears that it's related to the HDMI. When I switch the receiver to another input not in use by the Toshiba, the picture comes on. Any thoughts on how I can fix this situation?

My friend now has similar problem with his Toshiba (Euro XE1). Suddenly, no video anymore via HDMI. Not sure what the problem is....Could it be these "handshake"-issues? Not sure what it fully means, though...
My friend already pretty much "dislikes" his Toshiba anyway (slow and all that), but he was going to sell it.

Re: DVD playback Problems on HD-A30
As a troubleshooting measure, try disconnecting the HDMI and connecting the optical audio out for your audio. I know this won't give you the same quality audio, but it may indicate that it is an HDMI handshaking issue impacting the component output.

Re: DVD playback Problems on HD-A30
Is there a setting (either in the receiver or the player) saying "audio only on HDMI"? Or something like that?Has this behaviour always been like that, or did it start at some point in time?

Re: DVD playback Problems on HD-A30
Ah.The DVD had MacroVision. MV is considered an encryption method on SDVD and won't be output on composite or component at a higher definition than 480i.
Could it be that your receiver forces the HDMI connection to set the player to 1080p or so? (This is close to thinking loudly.)
