Yet another iPod question...

The iPod does a great job of sensing any changes you make
through iTunes in adding/deleting songs and then synching
accordingly.

However, I am interested to know about this scenario....

Say I have "Dancing Machine" by the Jackson Five on my
iPod.

Then I find an extended edition of "Dancing Machine" that
I want to put on my iPod. I delete the old and replace with new.

Now here is the situation...

Though I replaced the older version with a newer extended
version the song title has not changed. That being the
case, when I sync the iPod, does it know that I replaced a song
with the same title with a longer version?

Hope that makes sense.

Re: Yet another iPod question...

I would guess it would know.

I've replaced songs and it picks up on it. I think it detects any deletions and additions and adjusts it on every sync regardless of title.

Re: Yet another iPod question...

Ron,
Are you importing the new song and deleting the old one from within iTunes? Or are you deleting the song from the computer directly and plopping the new song with the same filename?

The former should work as you'd expect -- I've done this several times. The former may not work, as iTunes keeps its own cache of song meta data, and if doesn't know to update it, well I supose it wouldn't.

Re: Yet another iPod question...

Dave, you used "former" twice in your example.

I delete the original song first via iTunes and then import the
newer version (same title) into it.

All of this is being done within iTunes.

Re: Yet another iPod question...

It should know. If you look at the full details of the song in iTunes, there is a lot of other info, including the date it was created and modified.

Bah! I had "latter" twice and fixed it. It's been a long week

What you're doing should work. You can fix any broken songs with the Get Info command and manually update it. Perhaps you should import the new song first, then delete the old one?

A tip from 2006 says iTunes automatically prevents you from importing duplicate songs. Maybe that feature is causing the trouble. Try that tip out to import the new song and see if helps.

Re: Yet another iPod question...

Dave,

Actually, there is no problem.

I can easily delete the original song and replace it with the extended
version of the same name.

I was just wondering if when doing a sync that the iPod recognizes
the fact that a change was made since the song title is the same but
the length of that song is not.

Re: Yet another iPod question...

Ron,

iTunes will remember every bit of data per track. The most basic is date added which I what I use for my preferences of sorting.

What you're doing is date modifying in changing title info.

Remember, there's heaps of "Track 1" etc. if you're not online.
