Star Wars Revisited was interesting to watch, and I have a lot of respect for the guy who put it together, but to me it's not much more than just
another Star Wars Special Edition, albeit with some of the more irritating parts removed.
I amazed at the way he removed that ronto walking across the screen- very skillfully done.
Lucas should be smart and close the barn door
before the horses get out, this time. A lot of people believe that the '06 DVDs were released in large part to cut down on all the bootlegging, but it was really too late. Many people I know of didn't buy the '06 discs simply because they already had satisfactory bootlegs, and they didn't want to give Lucas money for sub-par transfers.
I know that there are people who have acquired 35mm prints of the OT films (pre-SE) and are working on finding ways to do hi-def scans. Once that's done and they're 'out there' it's going to steal a bit of Lucas' thunder if he ever decides to release the orig. theatrical versions on blu-ray. It's just a matter of time- it's gone way beyond the X0 project and other laserdisc rips now. When you don't give people what they want, they'll find a way to get it themselves.
And BTW
I am in no way endorsing bootlegging, I'm just saying that I know it's going on.

That being the case, how does your program know what part of the image represents the subtitles, and where/how to reposition them?

No, they're not burned in.
