Paradigm 7SE

Hello,

Can anyone tell me if these are a good or bad deal please. Paradigm 7SE floor standing. He is asking $299 canadian for them.

How old are they ? Is is worth buying used speakers or do certain things in the speaker/cone components wear off over time and hence will give them a short life ? If they are not worth $299, what are they worth ? Anyone know if these are 2 or 3 way ?

He said I could try them out first. If I do try them out with my Denon 2808 how can I detect any problems with them if there are any problems ? Any other tips will be highly appreciated from you Gurus.

Regards,
Richard

Re: Paradigm 7SE

Relax, it was less than 3 hours between posts.

That's a pretty old speaker, but still nice, assuming it's in good shape. If you like how they sound then $300 isn't too much. I have to admit though, in that price range for used speakers I'd be looking at one of the Vandersteen Model 2C versions, if you have room for floor standers. Other monitor options include B&W 601/602s, several different KEF models, Usher, etc.

Re: Paradigm 7SE

Sorry, I just dont want to lose these if they are a good deal. I recently purchased a Denon 2808. I could get new Paradigms but I'd rather save the $ for something else. I auditioned Monitors and did'nt find them that appealing. The sound to be just did'nt sound full. I am not a novice at this so can someone tell me whether there is a big diff between the sound from full towers as opposed to two bookshelf style speakers ? Price wise I'd like to stay around the 4-500 mark for the pair. I am just starting to build my system. For now I'd like to get just two fronts. I have a Paradigm sub. My main use right now is music and say about 30% for tv and movies. Can anyone recommend speakers in that price range that I should audition ?

and thanks for the speedy response Dan.

Re: Paradigm 7SE

The Vandy 2C's will definitely out-perform the 7SE's and the 2808 should be able to drive them without any trouble. Here's a link to the current version of the Model 2C, the 2Ce Signature II. The newer versions are improved, but the basics of all 2Cs are the same.

However, like everthing in HT & audio, it's really personal preference. I had Paradigms (Monitor 90P's) and liked them, I thought they were acceptable for music and did nicely for home theater. However, I'm more of a music fan than HT enthusist and I loved how the Vandys sounded with music, so the Paradigms were out, the 2Cs in. You might be exactly the opposite.

Re: Paradigm 7SE

Hello,

Sorry Dan I cant afford Vandys at this time. Possibly next year. Right now I have two old home made speakers with 2 domes in each. So anything woul dbe better than those pieces of crap. All I want is two fronts for now. which I can use later in my 5.1 setup. What are my other choices in some decent speakers in the $500 to $1000 range for bookshelfs.

Raymond what kind of a setup do you have there?

Re: Paradigm 7SE

There are 6 different pairs of Vandersteen 2C's on AudioGon right now for $500 or less, 2 for under $350. That's why I recommended them, they are within the budget you posted.

Re: Paradigm 7SE

Sorry Dan, I did'nt notice that. I just saw a couple at nothing less than 2k and backed out. I'll take another peek. Another problem is I am in Atlantic Canada and I doubt I can find a dealer here for Vandys. Closest would be Toronto. I could ask my bro-in-law to pick some up for me though.
