Speaker size for room area?

I am building a home theater and trying to figure out speaker size and power for a room that is 17' long x 13.5' wide x 9' tall. Total area is 2065. Is there a formula or process to figure out the type (I would prefer in wall speakers) and size of speakers and subs?
The reason I ask this question, I was looking at Klipsch KL-7800-thx and the are recommended for rooms with an area over 3000'.

I have Denon Avr-2308 receiver. I am looking at Sunfire subs. Trying to figure out if 2 10" or one 15" is what I need as well.

Google HSU subwoofers and look at some of the speakers; there is a gudie that may help you out, look for the loudness level number under a selected speaker. I hope it helps

Thank you for the info. Very nice.
I am still having trouble finding any info on speaker size and amount of amp power needed for a room area. How big a difference is there in a 90 watt Denon vs a 100 watt? One step further, how about a 100 watt Denon vs a 110 watt Yamaha?
Does the size of a amp decide the size of your speakers?

the diff. between the three is very very small. remember to have something twice as loud you need 10 times the amount of power. Also take a look at the sensitivity of the speaker. For example 91 Db 1 watt @ 1 Meter, that means that with one watt at one meter away that speaker is putting out 91 decibels of sound.


I am a big fan of B&W 600 series. they make 2 sizes of book shelf I would go with the larger size and a Velodyne sub. To power said B&W's I would go with a ROTEL receiver. I have put that rec. Up against Yam, Den and onk. and it Just sounds better. Smoother and more detail without being overly bright.


I have sold Many, many, many Rotel, B&W and Velodyne combos and it Just sounds awesome.

My room is 2000 cf, almost exactly the same size as yours. Over the years I have had a 50wpc stereo receiver, 70wpc surround receiver, 110wpc Dolby receiver, and recently added a 350wpc power amp just for the front speakers. And the speakers have run the gamut from 1970s 2-way large bookshelf models to my current 4-way, 4 feet tall powered towers.

My point in mentioning all this is that I was very happy with each combination. They all filled my 13 x 19 room with very satisfying sound. I'm sure that the system I'm now using would also fill a much larger room. I think your concern shouldn't necessarily be whether or not the speaker/amplifier combination will be loud enough (almost any will be, short of some dinky HTIB systems), but whether you will be pleased with how the speakers sound in your room. Listen carefully. Good luck.

Hi Chris,

What matters with larger rooms is not so much how loud your speakers can play, especially if you're sitting fairly close to them (i.e., 10-15 ft.) Rather, their bass output is the real issue. The problem is, large rooms "soak up" bass (sorry for the poor terminology), so larger rooms require speakers with more or larger bass drivers. Othewise, they will sound "thin" and insubstantial.

That said, that largely changes if you're using a subwoofer. I'm using bookshelf speakers with 6-1/2" speakers in a 9000 sq. ft. family room and with subs it works fine.
