Singer, songwriter Isaac Hayes dies at age 65 - Yahoo! News

He'll always be known for Shaft and Chef. He was also quite a songwriter, with credits on classics like Soul Man and Hold On, I'm Comin.

He also cowrote the Dionne Warwick hit, Deja Vu. I love that song.

Sad news indeed. As I approach 60 it is even sadder than someone that close to my age has died.

His early work at Stax Records with Booker T and the MGs, Otis Redding and Sam and Dave are some of my favorite pieces of his music. He was a great musician, songwriter and record producer. I was happy when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF several years ago.

May he R.I.P.

I just read this on Yahoo and couldn't believe it! He passed way before his time. May he rest in peace.

It's been a pretty bad weekend for Black entertainers, hasn't it?

While I've been angered by Hayes recently over the whole South Park Scientology debacle, he was obvioulsy a talented performer.

My cousin made me watch "Hustle and Flow" today so it was pretty weird coming home, checking the news and his death being the first thing I saw.

Re: Isaac Hayes dies at 65

And to think, his albums released on the reteconned Stax jazz music label, Enterprise, in the late 1960s-early 1970s clearly helped set the stage for a lot of what soul--and pop--music would sound in the time to come.

When Hot Buttered Soul was released back in 1969 during a move by Stax Records CEO Al Bell to make up for the repository lost when the Stax distributorship was changed from Atlantic Records to Gulf+Western one year earlier, it was considered the 27th out of 27 albums of apparent significance that very spring. By summer's end, it would be Number One of 27!!!!!

From the top of Sir Isaac's trademark bald plate on the outside of the LP jacket to all the songs located inside, clearly Mr. Hayes was onto something.

And that something would be a certified gold record which catapulted Mr. Hayes to the musical stratosphere from where he would utltimately end up in the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame, setting up Shaft and other classic albums of the time he would have, such as The Isaac Hayes Movement, To Be Continued and Black Moses, just to name a few.

And, of course, besides the music, he was also an acclaimed actor with several musical credits as well, notably, more recently, Chef on South Park which endeared him to an entire new generation of fans.

Needless to say, he will be missed.

R.I.P., Black Moses.

So sad. He will be missed. I will cue up my Hot Buttered Soul SACD as a tribute.

Good idea, Lee. I did so earlier with my old 1969 Enterprise LP. I shall try to find a copy of Hot Buttered Soul on SACD in the time to come.

I wasnt as familiar with the "Duke"'s 60s and 70s music as his film work. But his passing "I cannot dig it"

RIP Chef

When I get time to sit down and listen without distraction, I'll be spinning the score to Shaft on SACD. RIP Mr. Hayes.

I was wondering if South Park would do a tribute. I know he had a bit of bad blood toward the end due to his religon but.....?

The Chef character was Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
killed off at the beginning of S10 and they gave a nice eulogy for the character then.

Did anyone ever try the recipe for Chocolate Salty Balls? It seems pretty straightforward, except for the "bag or two of sugar" line.

You should read this article: Isaac Hayes' History with Scientology.
