Price of New TV on DVD - Page 2

Re: Price of New TV on DVD

As much as I love Perry Mason, I will not buy S3V1 on release date. Experience has taught me that if I wait a few months, it will show up in a Paramount TV on DVD assortment at Sam's or Costco, or some online retailer will be running a Paramount sale. (For example, I waited on buying Mannix S1, and now I was able to get it from DD for $24.60.)

I've never understoond the concept of split season sets. Its like buying half a donut because I can't afford the other half. Give me a break. It's a simple way of the studios to make more more more money, period. Was it Battlestar Galactica that started this pattern?

Based on what I've read on this thread thus far, it's no wonder sales of older shows have dipped in the last couple of years - we've got tons of DVDs to watch and could wait for a better price.

Having said that, would you guys buy Beverly Hillbillies Season 2 at $39.99 pretax (Amazon.ca)? I'm not sure if the price is reasonable for the amount of episodes in the season but I heard Paramount has a reputation of editing their shows - is this true?

Hell no!!!!!

That should be one of the cheaper shows. I have a collection of 100 old TV eps that includes a crap-load of Beverly Hillbillies...and the set only cost me $15 at Deepdiscount!

I was glad to watch the eps of thios show that I have....but personally, it is not a show that I would buy the whole series of, and not a show that one can watch over and over again.

The smart move on this show would have been to offer the whole series at one time, for a reasonable price. I really thought they might do that with a lot of these old B&W shows...as clearly, the rights to them are much cheaper than more modern stuff...the audience is primarily a specialty audience (Not like you're gonna have 14 year-olds picking up shows like this down at the local Wal*Mart), and the transfer issues are much less complex.

I would really expect them to put out the whole series in one set for about $75 American. (I might even buy such a set for that price).

While I don't think $39.99 is a price I'd pay for this set (I'd try and get it for under $30, even if that meant waiting for a sale of some kind), the show is worth it to me. Whether one watches the eps over and over is a matter of personal preference.

And the episodes you bought from DD are probably part of a Mill Creek compilation that are only going to include PD quality episodes. There is something to be said for getting a set that has all the episodes, in order, in pristine quality. That's why I'll definitely be buying both the Henning series from Paramount.

Gary "I doubt I'll buy them on the release day, opting instead to wait for a certain sale in November, but I will be buying them nonetheless" O.

Agreed! There is no substitute for having a show that you love, in all it's glory...all episodes...in order.....

And don't get me wrong- I think Beverly Hillbillies is a darn good show- but it certainly is a matter of personal taste as to whether one could watch it over and over.

And speaking of shows with Buddy Ebson in them...I wonder if they're ever gonna release Banaby Jones? (That's one show I'd definitely buy...and in my opinion, would be a good candidate for release- not having been seen on TV in ages, it'd likely sell quite well, because I'm sure all of it's fans are chomping at the bit to see it again)

Barnaby Jones? I can hear it in the boardroom now:

Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling that $39.99 is too pricy considering most of those episodes have been released in the second volume of the Henning issue of a couple of years ago.

As for the show itself, there's some really funny moments in this show especially the early B&W seasons.

Re: Price of New TV on DVD

Well this is a switch. Did you guys notice the price of Season 1 of Get Smart? Costco is selling it for $20. If that trend continues for all 5 seasons, you're looking at $100 for the complete series. How much did we pay from Time Life? Over $250!!! Why did this happen? Shouldn't the complete series cost less than the individual pieces?

Amazon has it for $16.99. I need to order it.

But you're speaking of Time-Life... the King of price gouging! Plus we got the "special packaging" of the cardboard "phone booth" box and the extra disk per season of bonus "features" that will be typically watched once at most. Isn't that worth an extra $50-$100?

I *think* it was "Lost in Space" that was the first to do this starting with season 2.

That was second, in Sept. 2004 for Season 2, Volume 1.

Sex And the City - The Complete 6th Season, Part 1 was first in May 2004.

Not because I don't love the old Warner Bros. cartoon but because of the price of the unit. Amazon is selling it up here in Canada for $56 (over $63 after tax). The problem I had with this price is that I just went to a Costco where all volumes 1 - 5 are selling for $24, less the half the price.

Considering that I purchase tons of TV on DVD and I haven't even touched volume 4 of the Golden Collection series, I figured I have time to wait until the price shoots down to a more reasonable price.

The question or observation I have is "does price make a difference?" Are there other factors invovled other than price. For instance, I've been waiting for Night Gallery 2 to come out for 4 years. I watched the 1st season probably as soon as I bought it (and I did the same for the 1st Golden Collection, btw). I can't wait until Season 2 is released and will probably buy it immediately regardless of the price or will I? Will I wait until this unit also drops in price, as they all do?

What are your thoughts? Anyone else share the same thoughts?

The problem I have with my changed purchasing pattern is that it may impact the release of future titles or volumes because Warner will not open it's price at $24 for a new release. They'll lose money on the title (I think?). When I first started buying these shows, I was forking out $100 for titles like Twilight Zone. And since then, prices have been dropping. I really hate when I walk into a store and see a title I bought a year or 2 ago selling for a fraction of what I paid for. Especially, since I haven't even had time to watch the show yet. It made me think of how much to pay for my next purchase.

Peace
Joe

I'll tell you Joe it's a catch 22. On One hand I want to support the releases to insure more seasons are forthcoming, especially classic tv, but on the other hand the prices these get dropped to at a later date make it very attractive to wait. Most of the sets I have in my collection if I had waited I could've picked up for as much as 50 to 60 percent off, thats nothing to sneeze at. I waited for the Jeannie Releases and just paid about $17 for S3 and 4. So I am going to wait on alot of TV stuff from now on.

Regulus, I couldn't agree with you more. My ceiling on DVD seasons is more like $30 (give or take a buck or two). I figure at that price, how much could it actually go down? $20? Well, in that case, I'm out $10 bucks - big deal. It's those Sopranos sets that retail for $80!!! The price difference could be staggering after discount.

The Thing I look at is every year TV gets suckier and suckier, sure there's stuff I DVR and watch but I have alot of Nights now where I'm watching alot of Classic TV thanks to my collection, thats why my Movie purchases have practically dropped to nill, but my TV purchases continue.

Dave,

I imagine that there's a lot here that would agree with you. Just IMO, but I basically stopped watching network shows after about '96 or so. I know that there's some quality shows out there but IMO, not as many as the earlier days of TV shows. I did enjoy "Firefly" that I borrowed from my nephew but that's the only one that I've seen in a long time. The big advantage for current series viewers is that most of the shows are soon available on DVD after their initial runs.

As for TV/DVD pricing, I'm with you and Joe on this one. Ironic that you mentioned "...Jeannie", since that's one (S5) that I would have already bought in my earlier days buying TV/DVD sets but I'm waiting for a sale on it. The price drops (by waiting) are just too deep to ignore for me.

IMO, if we had more information on what shows were discontinued, or on hold, or waiting for their slot in the Mfg line, etc, it would make a difference in my purchases. But the not-knowing about a show's status (ie "Big Valley", etc) makes it more difficult for me to buy at release to try and do my part to insure continued releases.

Right now DD is running an incredible "Buy One, Get One Free" sale with IMAGE dvds. If you are a fan of shows like Combat, I Spy, Twilight Zone, or The Dick Van Dyke Show you can get them very cheap.

Gary "not sure how or if I can link that page, so folks will just have to go to DD and click from there to the appropriate page" O.

Boy, Gary...your post sent me scurrying to DeepDiscount's site...and I can't find that sale anywhere. There is no banner for it on their main page and I can't find it in a search anywhere else.

I thought so too. Definitely a must buy for anyone that passed up on them previously, IMHO.

Re: Price of New TV on DVD

Gary, that's "Sherlok Holmes" work on that Image sale

Strange that they aren't offering the complete Combat! series set, only most of the individual season sets. I saw that they have the complete TZ Definiteve set & the Dick Van Dyke Complete series sets. imo, those 3 are the headliner releases from Image.

Anyone that may be considering the Combat! sets, the complete series set that's available at DD, Amazon, etc, is the same as the individual sets (no new Extras, etc, vs the individual releases). You get a savings vs the single-season vol sets as expected with most series sets.

Re: Price of New TV on DVD

What i hate most is that when you buy them "expensive" when they first come out and they release all the seasons. They re-release it as a COMPLETE SERIES package with new features and a cheaper price then you paid at first. This sucks cause it's the loyal fans that supported them in the first place and now they get ripped off.

Re: Price of New TV on DVD

Allen,

Your 100% right and there's a lot of agreement on this Bd and elsewhere about your point. If I recall, Gord at TSoD recently posted an editorial about this very issue. It does seem to me that those who faithfully buy at release wind up regretting it later. I guess it all comees down to the show and where it rates on the individual's list. For me, I've been fairly fortunate with the "dice-rolling" with the buy vs wait scenarios.

For Combat!, that one's my #1 show (or it's a tie with the Fugitive) so when the individual season releases became available, I ordered all on release dates. For that show, as mentioned in my earlier post, I got lucky since I didn't miss out on any Extras specific to the complete series release, except for possible shelf-space savings with the complete series digipak vs the original single-season army/pack sets.

For TZ Definitive Version, I didn't buy the single-season sets and waited for the complete series set but I didn't know at the time that Image would release the complete series set, just got lucky waiting for it.

For Dick Van Dyke, I was a late buyer into that series and had only bought the 1st season set then the complete set became available. I gave the 1st season set to a friend.

For the Wild Wild West Complete set, I didn't wait for that complete series release but I probably wouldn't have bought the complete set just for the 2 TV-movies. Closer call on that decision but I'd waited so long for WWW that I bought the single-season releases as available.

That said, I do agree with you and most, if not all, here, as well as Gord's editorial. Seems to me that there should be some "good will" emulating from at least, the major studios for the single-season buyers out there. I'm not sure what, but "where there's a will, there's a way".

Re: Price of New TV on DVD

I think offering the "Bonus" disc for $10 or something would be a good idea or even selling the "NEW" packaging with the bonus disc on the company's website would make me happy. I would still be spending more but it is better than re-buying the same DVDs

Same here at least on the ginormous collection that sits mostly unwatched!
I'm mostly the same way on price, with some exceptions such as Blu-ray sets for ``Lost'' and ``Heroes''...

I hear ya, with the amount of TV on DVD that I own, I could easily open my own television network - wouldn't that be cool?

As for Blue-Ray, the same thing will happen to them - prices are high at the start and will plumett later on. I love what Future Shop is doing here in Canada - on the release date of August 26th (tomorrow!), they will be selling Heroes Season 2 for $27!!! This is such a great gesture; not sure if the studio is granting the discount or Future Shop will take a hit on the show for the first day. After that, the show goes back to its regular price of $1 million dollars (insert Dr. Evil's signature voice and laugh).
