+1

I know the show is live, but that bit seemed very spontanious. Great fun goofing on Amy's special moment.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

The 'Jizz in my pants' digital short had me dying from laughter.

Seriously, when is JT going to come on the show as a full-time cast member? He's awesome!

I can understand why some black people would be offended by having Armisen play yet another prominent African American leader, but I thought his Paterson was dead on with the voice and the body language.
As for making fun of the blind, I speak as a person who was born with severe visual disabilities. The worst were corrected with surgeries when I was two, but I still grapple with a rare congenital disorder called Duane syndrome in both eyes, which has left me with squat for perpipheral vision. And I thought the sketch was hilarious, certainly no more mean-spirited than when Chevy Chase parlayed President Ford's clumsiness into comedic gold. Paterson himself has fun with his blindness, so why can't other people? If it weren't for his infidelity and admitted drug use, there's no way this skit would have aired. Sometimes people just need to lighten up.

I haven't heard any complaints along those lines, probably because Armisen is not making fun of people's race when he plays Paterson or Obama, and because with the makeup, he looked quite a bit like the real men. He did a better job than Kenan Thompson would have done (due to Kenan's voice and looks- hard to picture him as Obama).

To me it's the same as Hammond playing Jesse Jackson or Billy Crystal as Sammy Davis, Jr. (Or for that matter, anyone on SNL who plays a real-lfe person of the opposite sex.) They're impressions, not attacks on anyone's ethnicity.

I didn't think the Paterson skit was meant to be a slap at the blind, more just a silly takeoff on him.

Youtube didn't think it was funny, they've completely blocked the showing of the skit.

Did they block it for that reason or because NBC is showing it themselves.

According to the videos on youtube, one said youtube blocked because it was offensive, and the other videos wouldn't play and websites came up, I guess where you can go and see it.

I agree with your points, but the complaints are out there. I think the minstrel show archetype is so close to the surface that anyone -- even a Hispanic-Asian man doing a dead-on impression -- is going to offend certain black voices. Thompson definitely wouldn't have fit either role.

Of course, both Hammond and Crystal took the same low-level heat for those portrayals as Armisen is now. Part of it's because SNL always seems to bring a white, urban perspective to a lot of its humor. Back in the 1990s, "In Living Color" and even "Mad TV" since could get away with a lot more because they didn't operate from that voice.

Comedy is based on caricature. Armisen exaggerated the clumsiness caused by Paterson's blindness just like he exaggerated the voice and the governor's sense of humor. Because Paterson is a pretty funny guy in his own right, this gave them free rein for one of the funnier political parodies in recent years.

More likely, NBC Universal had the videos pulled so that they could get ad revenue from having their own stream embedded everywhere. The race controversy and the blind controversy mean interest has to be through the roof. Plus the fact that it's just plain funnier than most of what we've gotten from recent SNL (though this year has been better than most.)

Where do the videos on YouTube get their information.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Neil Patrick Harris did a reasonable job this weekend. The way the opening monologue was going, I thought that Fred Savage was going to be in the SNL audience instead of regulars doing lame "How I Met Your Mother" jokes.

I was disappointed with the NPH show, but I suppose my expectations were pretty high too. I wonder how Rosario will do tonight?

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I don't watch the show anymore. To many commercials for very little comedy.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I loved NPH (except for the lame Air Traffic Controller sketch) but tonight's is painful. Worst episode of the season, although Rosario's a better host than Michael Phelps (not really fair since a blade of grass would've been a better host than Phelps).

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

The show was bad. Patricia Wigg is a standout, but they're starting to overuse her. Please, I beg you, don't make "Gilly" a regular sketch.

I liked the Aladdin sketch, and La Policia Mexicana was somewhat funny but went on a little long.

Seth Meyer needs a cohost on Weekend Update. He's ok but it's not that good with just him.

& If they really don't have a good idea for a Digital Short, they should just not have one.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

The Mexican police one was good, but that's about it. Bad bad show this week. I've liked Wiig a lot, but lately she's been appearing way too much and her characters haven't been good.

The band was great, though.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Pretty disappointing show this week, (save for "Gillie") or whatever her name was.

But I just came across this pic. and went "DAAAAAAMN!" and had to share!

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Has anyone been watching SNL lately? The shows with Brad Whitford and Bradley Cooper were pretty bad, but I'm hoping next week's show with Alec Baldwin will be funny.

When was Bradley Whitford the host? I've watched every episode this season (at least, I thought I had), and don't recall him
post #109 of 183

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

It was last week? or week before. It wasn't memorable at all-- I'm almost sure of this. Maybe it was Bradley Cooper I was thinking of. Sorry if I said something untrue,
post #110 of 183

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

No, Bradley Whitford did not host this season (or any other season I'm aware of). But I also confused the names and thought it was Whitford when they announced that Bradley Cooper was hosting. Like, I've seen Cooper in movies and TV shows (like Kitchen Confidential), but I don't know him by name.

There were a few okay sketches (Today with Hoda and Kathy Lee is a solid sketch so far), but nothing really memorably funny. I guess it was to cleanse the palate between Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Although did anyone see Steve Martin's episode? As much as I love him, it was one of the weakest shows of the season. When his musical performance is the best thing about the show, that is saying something.

It wasn't high art, but the NY governor bit on the News cracked me the eff up.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

So the show hosted by the guy I've never heard of is much better than the one hosted by Steve Martin. Seth is more confident on the news and he managed a good Really?! on his own. Wiig is a genius but I would like to see more of the other gals.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

What was up with the Baldwin episode? Only sketch I laughed at was the Wii and then there must have been some timing issues to run three previously used commercial spoofs.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

No classics but I enjoyed it overall. Michaela Watkins is coming to the fore and she gave snarky bloggers a taste of their own. The Vincent Price special was well done but I remember who those people are. The Wii bit was rather MADTV for anyone who misses that show. I thought the Jonas Brothers acting was better than their music but I'm not a 14 year old girl. (Excepting MySpace of course.)

I come from a mixed marriage. I am a Repub and my wife is a Dem. We both thought that skit about the Repub congressman was not funny. And its not because I am a Repub...I enjoyed the Tina Fay/Palin skits.

I really wanted that skit to be funny. Sadly it just wasn't.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

The only skit that I really liked a lot was the Vincent Price bit, although the early-'80s Jonases in the Digital Short cracked me up.

(Can you tell I'm not in my 20s anymore? )

Did anyone like The Rock last night? I thought he was pretty funny, especially the Obama/Incredible Hulk sketch. Why was Jessica Biel on Weekend Update ?

Agreed. That was a funny sketch!

She was supposed to be Jessica Rabbit, who (according to the WU story) was recently voted "the sexiest female cartoon character of all time." Justin Timberlake also appeared in the same piece as a nerdy fanboy.
