Saturday Night Live - Season 34 - Page 2

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

It was an all-around very good episode - I even liked the musical group.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Most consistently funny show in years. The Lawrence Welk sketch was comedy gold. Hell even the SNL Digital Short, while not great - was stupid fun.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

It was the first time since Feist that I actually watched the musical guest, and the first time since I don't know when since I watched the musical guest not knowing the song.

Are they Swedish? The lyrics were gibberish, but the song was catchy.

The debate sketch wasn't as vicious as the previous ones (Pailn is becoming the lovable idiot that Ferrell's Bush became), but it was still good. Lots of strong sketches -- the Lawrence Welk Show sketch was less about the script than about makeup/props/costume, but is was lizard brain funny -- my wife and I were in total hysterics.

Lost of strong sketches and consistently funny throughout (as already mentioned, the monolog and the first sketch were funny, and those are typically weak). Even the Mary Poppins sketch was really funny, and that style of sketch usually thuds.

Best show of the season so far.

You've never seen The Killers before? This is their third SNL appearance IIRC. They've been around for a few years and did that "Somebody Told Me" song ("...that you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year...")

It was definitely the best show of the season and Anne is by far the best host they've had in a long time. I really hope they bring her back.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I hope SNL doesn't do with the Palin skits that they do with a lot of other good recurring character skits....Overuse it.

Really good show. Even for the sketches that weren't funny, they didn't drag. Hathaway did a great job.

The Killers performed two more songs after the credits ran. It was videotaped - no idea if it will be used anywhere.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Anne must be able to quickly scan cue cards and then deliver her lines with good inflection to elevate the material written for the skits because I watched how she'd sneak peeks at the cue cards, but then deliver the lines as naturally as possible. It was appreciated since many other guests would just stare at the cue cards with nary any connection to their character was saying. Sudekis was also doing a good job on his lines in the "Not-so-gay roommate" sketch.

Tina Fey said she doesn't want to do Palin much longer, and suggested that perhaps some people might help her stop by November 5th (day after election).

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I wanted to see Fey/Palin after the debates, but I wanted it to be a short skit. I liked the redux performance, but I thought it ran a bit long.

Fully agreed. We watch dedicatedly, (new word?) every week and even suffer through eps. like the Phelps one for a chance we could see a good show. This was one. The Mark Wahlberg talks to animals had us in tears as well.

I liked six-degrees connection to the Princess Diaries via the Mary Poppins sketch. I'm sure Julie Andrews got a kick out of it.

The bail out skit was very funny. The couple that sold off to Wachovia are a real.

The skit keeps getting pulled from youtube. But, here is a working (for now)
The video has been pulled. Vanished into thin air.

Nikki Finke has an interesting article about the skit with the edited version imbedded.

I believe both of The Killers songs are from their upcoming album, Day & Age. If you go to their website at The Killers the first song that was played - their first single from the album - "Human", plays.

The Weekend Update Thursday was great last night. A beautiful opening debate skit and lots of good Weekend Update pieces including a sequence on the recent AIG news that everyone who heard about it knew had to be there. Really! If you missed it, NBC has the whole show and segments on their website.

I've got to disagree. I thought it was the weakest of all the political debates this season. Nothing worked.

And, they missed an easy joke. A lot of the post debate commentary was about how Brokaw let McCain ramble on, yet kept cutting Obama off. I thought that was going to be the joke when Brokaw first cut Obama off, but he then cut of McCain as well. I thought it was going to be like the Primary debate sketch, where the news media asks Obama if he wants a pillow, while ignoring Clinton. Instead, it really made no sense.

It wasn't funny, which is the biggest crime .

And, while I liked the "Really" bit, the rest felt like deleted jokes from previous Updates.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I'm shocked that nobody has posted about last nights episode. Not overly impressed by it except for the Palin spots, but the Fey/Palin/Baldwin opening was pretty funny. I laughed pretty hard at WU Palin Rap -- the lady seems to have some chops to sit there and actually seemed to be having a bit of fun with the whole thing.

The end credits/cast hug was interesting to watch as a couple of cast members hugged Palin, but Fey seemed to be almost hiding in the background instead of standing near Palin. The knee high Leather Boots were quite impressive.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

with regards to reading cue cards, i can understand if you're in multiple sketches, that you just don't have time to memorize lines, but for a pro like Baldwin who's been a host every other week, and was only in one short sketch last night, he read off the card like he was a non-actor first-timer.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I didn't see the show last night, but I watched the clips of the opening and Weekend Update rap and I laughed my ass off. Palin really did seem to be enjoying herself during the song and when they brought in the moose and shot it I almost choked to death.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Glad to see that others are noticing the surprising reliance on cue cards by the actors. I have not been watching SNL much the past couple of years, but what I have seen recently was really, really amateur of the full time actors. It seemed like all of them were just cold reading the cards. I mean, I can understand having to glance at them once in a while in a skit, but come on...no way seasoned actors should be THAT reliant on cards.

"So Scott...you think you can do better?"

Yes...yes I do. Give me a shot and I will prove it.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Did anyone like Jon Hamm last night? The Mad Men parody wasn't very funny (I don't watch the show) even with John Slatterly and Elizabeth Moss. The Vincent Price sketch was okay, but no Amy Pohler on Weekend Update was bad.

Amy was kinda busy:

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Three Coldplay songs? Did they have to cut a skit with Amy in it or something?

The show was pretty bad overall.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Good episode, and I haven't seen Mad Men. The host did a really great job.

Has any music guest ever performed 4 songs before? I know U2 did 3 a few years ago.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I'm pretty sure Paul Simon did 3 when "Graceland" was out.. I can check, but I'm -really- sure that he performed three.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

Didn't Bon Jovi perform three songs last year, despite The Foo Fighters being the *actual* musical guest?

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I thought it was a strange approach to acknowledge how few people watch "Mad Men" in the monologue and then to do sketches that would only make sense for those few people. I was enjoying them - being one of the few - but I don't know how it was any good for those who haven't seen the series.

That must have been it. She had been rehearsing with her until Friday. So, they had to make some last minute changes. Having Coldplay do another song was a quick fix.

I thought they did a good job of using Jon Hamm. The first Mad Men skit was good until the A-holes arrived. I wish they had gone in another direction there. I was pleasantly surprised to see the other actors from Mad Men in that skit.

Re: Saturday Night Live - Season 34

I thought the MM skit was great, if a little wooden at times. The "Don Draper's Guide to Picking up Women" was great as well. And I loved seeing JH as a drunk in the Vincent Price skit.
