Right, but that doesn't change the fact (and point of this thread) that people aren't doing that. They see one thing, automatically assume the worst, and then spam the forums with uninformed opinions that are completely off-base. Plus, by your rationale, you shouldn't even be hinting about a film's "problems" without a look at the film.

Somebody ran the BD version through a "film grain generator" tool in Adobe After Effects and it's indistinguishable from the version the compared it to (1080i broadcast). Check it out for yourself:

Adding artificial grain to an image won't return detail to an image that lacks detail. It will simply add a layer of grain over the top. I'm not really sure what the point of those captures is.

1080i has exactly the same resolution as 1080p and, as long as your tv does a good job of de interlacing, you should not be able to tell the difference.

Now broadcast 1080i will obviously be a much lower bit rate than a blu-ray which could cause other issues.

Right, and a 1080i broadcast master will probably have more EE and DNR applied to it so it will compress better to fit through the narrower bandwidth "pipeline".

The point was essentially what you just said. The grain and noise has been minimized, but not the detail. When people started bitching, someone took it upon themselves to show exactly what was wrong with the strident "OMG DNR is killing this! WAXY FACES!" crowd by showing them that the only removal was of the grain, not detail.

But again adding grain won't show that one way or the other. Those image don't tell me that detail has or hasn't been removed. The only way to tell that would be to look at a good quality release print, or better yet the answer print. Adding grain to an already processed the image is simply an exercise in futility.
