Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

I am not asking for names. But, a few of my friends were talking about this while watching a baseball game. We wondered how a celebrity meets new friends (who aren't in the business)? How do they know if they want to be friends because they get along or because they are a celeb? On a similar note. My friends son goes to the same school as Bruce Springsteen's son. And you have to wonder when this kid meets someone. How does he know they just being friends with them because they like him or because his dad is Bruce Springsteen?

So I am curious if anyone here is friends or knows a celeb pretty well that might be able to answer this? And I am not including people who knew a celeb before they were big.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

A business relationship is one way.

You provide some service and do a good job. The celeb in question keeps coming back. Over time, you become more and more friendly to the point where you are exchanging birthday gifts and getting invited to their wedding.

I've met quite a few celebs, but I have never known any personally or been friends with any.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

I have a distant cousin, who is somewhat a celebrity. His name is Clyde King (do a Google search). I've met him once, so we're not really "friends". Just kinda neat knowing he's in the family...........

Being as we are reaching here... My sister studies gorillas in Africa. She has been in a few documentaries on TV and in magazines. No paparazzi though, so I guess she is not a celebrity.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

Kind-of a different subject but I'm related to Evelyn Ankers, the scream queen of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I don't personally know anyone famous however.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

Todd, I don't know how old Springsteen's son is, but I would hazard the guess that most kids don't know/care about the Bruce. And if they do, it's an abstract kind of thing. If they like the son, it's for his own qualities as a person.

I have a friend whose kids attend school in the LA area, and they know the children of a fair amount of actors, producers, musicians, etc. While they might think it's cool that so-and-so is Big Star's son, if he's a creep, they avoid him. For the most part -- from what I hear -- these kids don't make a big deal about who their parents are, and act like normal, nice people.

Well, thread rules are always getting broken, aren't they?

It's been years ago now but my niece used to be really well known when we lived in Kansas.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

My brother used to jam sometimes with Jerry Garcia and Billy Kreutzman. They wanted him to play in a band they were forming but my father put his foot down and absolutely forbid it, saying there was no future in such a band.

The band is known as The Greatful Dead.

When I was an engineer at Lockheed, one of my draftsmen was Chuck Yeager's kid.

When I studied 'cello, my teacher was a student of William Van den Berg, who was a student of Pablo Casals. Van den Berg was the principal cellist under Stoki when Fantasia was filmed and shows up in several scenes. Heck I took a class from him at UCSC years ago.

My good friend since high school used to work for Ernest and Julio Gallo. Is that about the same thing?

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

I made a movie (well short mockumentary) with Doug E. Doug in it, called Slapboxing: The Quickness of the Hand. He lives just down the street from the high school. That turned out well.

I also knew a kid that was the cousin of Rob Thomas's wife. He went to his wedding to her and brought pictures to us to show.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

This is an interesting question because it points towards how our social circles are structured. Just about everyone knows someone who knows someone who's famous, but so far it seems no one here can say they are friends with a famous person.

I have a pretty limited social circle on a day-to-day basis: family, work, neighbors, and friends. I would guess if I added up all the people that know me by name throughout my whole life, the number would only be a few hundred--extended family, former classmates, members of organizations I belonged to over the years, etc. As for people I can currently call non-family "friends" (which I define as someone you could turn to when you needed a favor such as helping them move) I would put that number under 50.

Anyway, fame seems to be rare and fleeting, and also a tightly-knit group. Once famous, they probably have limited opportunities to interact outside of their circles. Heck, even non-famous people often complain about not having opportunities to meet new people. Ask anyone who is having trouble finding a proper mate.

I've had Simon LeBon over for dinner. He usually calls when he's in town.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

My brother went to a wedding of a friend of his from college. At the wedding were the Estevez's (Emilio & Charlie) and the Penn's (Sean, Chris). His friend grew up in a house next to the Estevez's and Penn's. So they became friends as kids. My wife who loves Emilio was pissed my brother didn't take her.

My cousin player steel guitar for Garth Brooks for several years and is on (I believe) 2 of his albums.

Oh, and my wife accidentally hit Judge Reinhold in the head with a basketball when she was a teenager.

Or you could just say Emilio and Charlie Sheen so that those of us "not in the know" could know who you mean

Chuck Leavell used to occasionally jam with my band back in the late 80's. Haven't talked with him in ages though.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

I have been lucky enough to work with some pretty famous people. I can't really say I got to know all of them very well.

I guess the one I got to know the best was Casper Van Dien. Really good guy...down to earth.
Judd Nelson was super nice as well. Always greeted me on set by my first name and never was the least bit cocky etc.

Vinnie Jones is pretty much what you see on the screen. He is a fun guy to be around, but really does act like a bad-ass. Hmmm...that reminds me, he owes me a cigar!

The most unusual celeb I have worked with was John Rhys Davies. Everything the guys says sounds like it was from a movie script. Very hard to just chit-chat with, but just an amazing actor to watch perform. Off topic, it was fun to watch kids come to set to get an autograph from "Gimli" and see a near 6 foot man meet them!

My most recent was Jude Law. Hardly got the chance to talk to him, but what struck me was just how slight of build he is. Very thin fellow. No big deal, just something that I noticed.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

I know a couple.

I'm friends with Richie Keen (who you may know from the breath mint commercials telling his buddy how bad his breath is -- also the old AOL guy,) and Jim Mcgorman is the guitar player from the house band from Rock star -- also performed with Poison, Cher, and the New Radicals. He's currently on tour with Avril Lavigne.

Oh, and I have fred savage and eric stoltz phone numbers in my cell phone. hahah.

Re: Is anyone friends or know a celebrity?

I've been friends since 1989 with Tim Gaines, the bass player (well... former bass player now), of the '80s metal band Stryper. He moved back to the east coast a few years ago so I haven't seen him in awhile but I still hear from him from time to time. I also got to know the guitar player Oz Fox pretty well too although I never really hung out with him much.

It was kind of funny how I met Tim. I was REALLY big into CB radios back in the late '80s and there was a quite a large group of people on the radio around here at the time. I had heard rumors that a couple of guys from the band lived in town and talked on the CB. I thought the rumors where a bunch of crap until one night "Stingray" popped up on the radio and asked those of us who were sitting up on a hill above town if we wanted anything. Many of us would park our cars/trucks up in the hills above the city since CB is line of sight and we'd be heard for miles and miles from up there. Anyway, we just all looked at each other with the "NO WAY" look on our faces since we all knew who he was. Someone got back to him and placed an order for a couple of Pepsis and a Watchamacallit candy bar. About 10 minutes later he was back on the radio asking how to get to where we were. He made his way up to us and delivered our sugary treats and hung out with us for awhile. After that a friend of mine and I became pretty good friends with him and we used to hang out at his house quite a bit. He's actually one of two people who got me interested in amateur radio which led to me earning my ham license back in 1991.

Although I'm not friends with him, I did have the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Kiefer Sutherland just over two years ago. They had been filming 24 at Ontario International Airport and I guess they were done for the week. He quietly popped into the local restaurant/lounge that I hang out at and had a few beverages. After hanging out with the man for a good three and a half hours, I must say he is one of the most humble people I have ever met and he's certainly appreciative of his fans. After hearing stories about other celebrities being real jerks, it's nice to know that one that I am a fan of was a genuinely nice person.
