"Eat The Document" was torpedoed by executives at ABC. It was commissioned for the anthology series "Stage 67" and after viewing Dylan's re-edit the higher ups shelved it-far too trippy for their taste. It wasn't suppressed so much as forgotten until it was screened at the Academy of Music, also the Whitney Museum, in New York in the early 70s.

And Dylan bought the rights after ABC didn't air it. It's all his right now and that includes the original cut, which is apparently still in very good shape.
