Ebert & Roeper Move On / New Hosts Announced - Page 3

Scott and Phillips should make the show better and they definitely have more credibility.  I know not everyone liked Roeper, but I would like to see him back on a review show.  I liked the Phillips/Roeper dynamic.  Scott was OK when he was on.  I'm not sure about the Scott/Phillips dynamic.  There isn't a ton of contrast between them.

Scott and Phillips should make an interesting pair. I might actually enjoy the show again!

This is horrible.

I can't stand Mankewicz, his voice is annoying and his taste in movies jaded and biased.
Lyons isn't much better but he at least seems to have a more open interest in different styles of filmmaking.

In the 90's I used to watch Siskel & Ebert every week.  I even taped their shows for reference.  I considered Ebert to be a major influence on my love of cinema growing up.  He and Siskel's duo dynamic made for enjoyable TV.  Things obviously weren't the same when Siskel passed (I can't believe it's been 10 years already) and Ebert's surgeries have left him the inability to speak (God, that must feel terrible).

I wish they could've gotten more legit critics to take their places.  I for one would've gone with Peter Travers from Rolling Stone & Owen Gliberman and/or Lisa Schwarzbaum from EW.  Or Chris Connelly, he use to cover movies all the time in the late 80's/early 90's he also was editor-in-chief of the now sadly defunct Premiere magazine.

I assume you're talking about when they replaced Roeper and the guest critic with Ben and Ben instead of advocating someone over Scott and Phillips...

I'm wondering about that too. They've both been on the show, but I don't know if I've ever seen them interact together. Still, should be an improvement over the current show, which is itself an improvement over the hot mess of the first few weeks after the changeover to the Bens.

I don't know who Scott and Phillips are, but I've gotten used to Ben Lyons and Ben Manchiewicz.  They're both fine.

Enjoyed their first show.  They seem to have good chemistry yet divergent views.

Infinitely better then the bastardization version.

Trying to think of a show that went through a season viewers were encouraged to forget and move on....   Much improved.

Respectable, thought provoking film reviews have returned to At The Movies.

A.O. Scott is a fantastic film critic, and Phillips isn't bad either.
I can finally watch my favorite show once again.  Whomever made the decision for the new line up.....Thank You!

Well the show has been cancelled. It will run through August, but I have been enjoying Scott and Phillips who have added to the show with additional segements on the site and Facebook etc.

Roger Ebert has a lot to say about "At the Movies" and the show he is planning....

Same here.  I believe I started watching the show in 87'.  I can't tell you how many films(smaller, foreign) I discovered through that show. Siskel was a bit of a strange critic, he appreciated many fine films but there were some he gave "thumbs down" to that just boggled my mind(Hoosiers was one).   I look forward to the new project from Ebert.

On a side note, I watched a rerun of Who wants to be a millionaire a few weeks back.  It was a special movie edition.  Lyons, and Mankewicz were on there as "ask the experts".  They bombed with the first question a  contestant  needed help with.  The second time they were called on was for a $100,000 dollar question.  They were positive they had the right answer(especially Lyons who was really smug about it).  They were wrong.  I'm sure the contestant wasn't a fan of theirs either.

I've watched it since the beginning in 1978 as Sneak Previews on PBS. I did bail when the two idiots took over from Roeper and Phillips, but came back when Phillips returned with A.O. Scott.

Roger has been saying for sometime that a new show was being envisioned. I'll believe it when I see it.

I saw the news of the cancellation wednesday as well, was even going to post about, but I see it's here!

I'm not surprised, I stopped watching when Roger stopped appearing. Even before then the show is on a bad timeslot here, so I usually missed it.

I read that article by Ebert on the link above, thanks. I heard he had been working on something whn he was on Oprah. I think he's being very smart in his new plan and is being being very forward thinking. He knows that the market is so fragmented now for the audience of that kind of movie review show as well as the movie audience.  So he's got a great a great idea to find that movie review audience, the smart ones who think before they go see a movie. It will be interesting to see how this works out!

Forgot to mention, the first time I saw Siskel and Ebert was also around 1978 on PBS. What a trip! I thought, who are these guys!

Wow, I did not know this until now.  I have really enjoyed the class with which Tony and A.O. have carried the show recently.  Not happy about the cancellation.  It will be interesting to see what Roger's show looks like.

Just thought I'd give this thread a bump.  This weekend we should see the last episode of "At The Movies."  Still hard to believe.  Not sure what I'm going to do to replace it.  I have been recording "Rotten Tomatoes" just to see what it was like and let's just say I'm not impressed.

24 years is an impressive run.  I hate to see it end though.  I really like Scott & Phillips.

More like 35 years if you go back to 1975 when Roger and Gene started Opening Soon at a Theater Near You, later renamed Sneak Previews, and finally At the Movies.

Good call.  I stand corrected.  Even more impressive.

Me too. It was a weekend ritual. I appreciated the fact that, no matter who hosted, they always included limited-release films (independent, foreign) and often championed those that one or both of the current hosts thought deserving. Most recently, Scott and Phillips favorably reviewed The Square, a terrific Australian film noir (for lack of a better label) that's out on DVD and Blu-ray later this month. We've been trying, so far without success, to get a review copy.

Just watched the last episode.  I appreciate the fact that Tony & Michael spent most of the show looking back at its' history.  They showed some great clips.  Nice tribute that was well done.

I don't blame Ben & Ben for killing this show.  I blame the guys at BV who hired them.  I wonder "What if" Tony & Michael had taken the show after Roeper stepped off.  Would have been nice.

I agree with the earlier sentiments about exposure.  There are plenty of movies I would have never seen had it not been for Siskel & Ebert and this show.

I guess I can remove my season pass now.

Peace,

As far as I'm concerned, the show died when Gene Siskel died.

I've been missing this show for 10 years already.

I've really been enjoying the show this season with Michael Phillips and AO Scott, both of whom I'd rate way above Roeper.  Wouldn't you know it, the last show and my local SF Bay Area network preempts it with a Time Life infomercial.  Any way to catch it online?

You'll sorta have to watch it in pieces, but it looks like everything is there under "Now Playing."

You can also catch it on the Reelz Channel if you have that.  On DirecTV, it is 238.

Peace,

On the theory that Roger Ebert's newly announced show deserves its own thread, I've consolidated all the posts about it here.
