I especially like the first one. It is very The Third Man.

Wow, quite the compliment. Thanks.

Looking forward to seeing your Maine shots, Scott.

To be clear, I like shot #5, but I didn't seem to like it as much as others and in trying to figure out why I felt that way, I came to the conclusion that it might be cropped too tight for my tastes. I wanted to see if it felt less claustrophobic and better weighted to me with more sky. In no way do I claim to be "right" and it appears that my opinion is in the minority since both you and John like it as is (and I'm OK with that). You are the only one who gets to see the different cropping possibilities and experiment with them so you are in a better position to judge what works and doesn't work (and you obivously have a good eye). It may be that after examining a looser framing I too would end up where you did.

Absolutely, I agree 100% with this.

I was talking to my wife about this today and when we are not hiking she will often bring along a book to read while I'm shooting. It is nice having an "assistant." I don't think she even minded it that much on our honeymoon, but she does enjoy reminding me about it. Turns out my business partner's wife had a very similar experience on their honeymoon. Neither one of them will let us forget it.

Re: Some shots from my recent vacation

Just one thing I need to point out. I have been through hundreds of critiques involving thousands of photos. This doesn't mean I am more "right" than anyone else, just that all those crits lead to a more comfortable approach to options regarding composition, and pretty much everything else about photography. When you have spends hours in a room with 20 or 30 other people critiquing images, it really opens your mind to options.
