MULTIPLE RECEIVERS. REMOTE CONTROL? ALL OFF? INTERCOM?

I am looking to do multiple room audio. The proprietary solutions seem way too expensive and don't seem to have great sound quality. So, I think I have resolved to using multiple recievers. I figure I can use one model of receiver multiple times so the remotes can control an area unit, or another area's unit with IR extenders. With IR, I should be able to keep from trasmitting to all recievers at once. I have a few issues to resolve. 1) I want to be able to shut all receivers off at once from a remote. 2) I would like to have an announcement/intercom system tied in.

Can I set up a secondary IR system that will power all units off by a single push on a univeral remote? I am wondering if there is a list of recievers that have a "discrete off" feature that would allow me to hit an "off" button as opposed to a "power" button so I am not turning some recievers on and some off when I hit "power". I prefer Denon, if possible. I am thinking I could use IR for controling individual units, and an RF to IR signal that would power the units down. It would require placing two IR emitters on each unit. Will this work? Any suggestions?

Is there an intercom system I can plug into an input(s) on a reciever and overide other sources? My idea is to turn all units on by remote and talk through a microphone to all speakers. Multiple mics would be cool, so we can talk back and forth.

The Ocelot along with its add on modules can keep track of what is on and off and send the appropriate codes to the appropriate receivers. You just have to keep the IR for each receiver from leaking to another receiver.

No offense, but it sounds like a mess. The wiring of all those sources would be a nightmare compared to central sources/amps and just running speaker wires.

Also, I don't know how you could independently control multiple units of the same model of receiver via one remote. Routing the IR signal to a specific receiver while excluding others would be almost impossible, unless there's an application I don't know of.

I personally have the Sonos system and it does all that you ask (except intercom) through WiFi and with the savings on wiring (not to mention aggravation), it would probably be cheaper.
