Heath was known but except for Brokeback, he had not received acting accolades. When he was named as the Joker EVERYONE flipped about how poor a choice it was. When the casting for Batman Begins was being named, alot of people were saying there were too many "big" names and they wouldn't mesh well. All I'm saying is if Nolan thinks someone is worthy of stepping into the Joker's shoes, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. EVERY male casting choice he's made has hit big and he has proven he deserves the lattitude.

Zack, I have to disagree. Penguin can be a very interesting character. If anyone has a chance to get to a comic store this week. Their is a series of one-shots called Joker's Asylum. The first issue was Joker then Penguin and Poison Ivy. But, in the Penguin one. It discusses how because of his physical looks he was humilited growing up and how it has affected him now. In the story he is having dinner and notices the chef and matre'd of a restaurant laughing. He is so messed up he thinks they are laughing at him. Does he kill them? No. He slowly destroys their lives piece by piece (health inspector closing the restaurant, gf deported, etc) until the chef commits suicide. He is a slow methodical killer. Who with his seemingly honest business keeps Bats at bay. Also, their is more to the story showing his true nature.

This is definitely no knock and doesn't speak about his talent but... Tom Hanks is a household name. Will Smith is a household name. Heath Ledger's name alone never could really open a film. A Knight's Tale and Brokeback Mountain were small hits but never blockbusters. Now he's a household name because of Batman but he definitely was not one before. When your grandma knows a name.. that's a household name.

If you dig up the Batman Begins II thread and start around page 6 or so, you'll see that the majority of people who cared (on this forum) were positive about the choice.
Maybe people elsewhere were up in arms , not here.

Yea that would be SHH. Some even started a petition.

They freaked out when Heath was announced. Of course they all love the movie and Heaths performance now right?

Trying to explain to those people to calm down, that there must have been something seen in auditions to make the filmmakers make the choice they did, and to have some faith in the filmmaker is a effort in futility.

What I would love to see is something like what was done in the last 2 books of "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller.

As others have mentioned, the 3rd book is called "Hunt the Dark Knight" and the fourth has him battling none other than Superman. For those that have read those books (and if you have not, you really should!)
It would have to be updated and adjusted for the screen, but I think it would make for a spectacular ending to what would essentially be a 3 part movie series.

I've found SHH! useful for two things: following the viral events and some news. Otherwise, a bit too hyperbolic for my tastes.

BOF is even worse, as well as having possibly the worst formatted boards I've ever seen.

I could see a female Robin and/or Catwoman playing a part in the third film. Females in Batman's life will definitely be an interesting angle/dynamic to play with now that Rachel's dead.

I also agree that if this is the final film in his trilogy, Nolan will probably go for broke and take alot from the apocalyptic "The Dark Knight Returns". Didn't Alan Moore once describe DKR as Batman's Ragnarök?

But yeah, female Robin....

I dunno, I think I'd prefer Talia al Ghul to Catwoman honestly in the context of Nolan's world.

My vote is Katrina Kaif as Talia al Ghul:





She's a Bollywood actress, but her first language is English having been raised in Hawaii. How perfect is that second shot anyway? Wowza.

Also from Wikipedia:

In the years since Talia meets Batman, she is repeatedly torn between loyalty to her father and her love of Batman. However, she has proven an important 'ally' in her way; most prominently, she encourages Batman to return to Gotham City when it is declared a "No Man's Land" following an earthquake, and he has lost his fighting spirit and didn't believe he could save Gotham.

Sounds like the character can come and counsel Batman if things get even worse in the third film.


Harley Quinn would also be great in the Nolan universe but how they do that now with the Joker situation up in the air is anyone's guess. Female Robin would be ... interesting, but it also might create the wrong type of sexual tension.

I've always found that character to be cheesy as all hell, mostly because of Burt Ward, Chris O'Donnell's whiny lil' bitch interperatation didn't help, either lol..

As for Pete-D's choice for Catwoman, to quote Jack from Burton's Batman..."Stop the press, who's that!?"

I don't think a female robin would work, but I do think that merging Robin and Batgirl's characters into a single one might be interesting. I wouldn't expect Nolan to do anything like that though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with including Robin, though I don't really care one way or the other. If anything I'd like to see them do it just to show everyone how it's done.

I've learned to avoid any fansites. Force.net, OneRing, Browncoats, B-o-F, Red Sox Nation, etc.

You name it...discourse will very likely be troglodytic. The interest of a fansite is focused on the object of fandom, and the viewpoints will likely be skewed around that. I prefer discourse from the POV of the medium, a bit more objective than you could find at a dedicated website. I'm not pretending I'm not a fanboy I certainly am.

But I'm one who prefers the company of the somewhat well-rounded.

well i ocassionaly check those sites just for some info, not to spoilerish, but maybe a small video or something during filming. now on to the third film, god willing that nolan will helm it. as i sat in the theater this weekend again, i i came to the realization that unless something had already been filmed with Joker in Arkum Asylum, the best cameo of the next film would be moot, unless they recast, but with the way they have been good enough this series to focus on other events, i would have liked to hear the conversation between the walls of Scarecrow and Joker, half of it of course would have been crane trying to psychoanalyze him, as Batman walks in.

Expect to hear some pretty crazy rumors until WB makes an official statement on the progress of the next movie. Given how much heat the movie is already generating in Tinseltown (everybody wants a role in this thing because of how massive TDK turned out), expect to hear some pretty wild rumors all the way up until the studio and Chris Nolan make their announcements on who the new villain(s) will be and who nabbed said role(s).

The next movie won't start shooting until sometime in 2010 and Nolan will most likely make another movie before then. It could be quite some time before we hear any real news on who the Dark Knight will be taking on in the third movie. Hell, Nolan has yet to even ink his new deal for the next movie. A deal that will in all likelihood be the richest he's ever had.

Cher? No effin' way. I don't believe it for a second.

A couple of things to note with the third Nolan-helmed Batman film...

First, if you've noticed, WB has been utterly silent on the DVD release for TDK. Understandable and smart, since they don't want to do anything to discourage people from seeing it in the theaters as it chugs its way towards $500M domestic BO.

And along those same lines...I have an MP3 interview with Jonah Nolan where he says the first draft of TDK was done in November of 2005, a bare five months after the release of Begins. So despite C Nolan's vagueness for a long while after Begins, both Nolans and Goyer had a very specific idea of where they were going with the second film. And remember everyone around Nolan (Chris) says he remains very tight-lipped about ideas until he's ready to move on them.

Unless WB leadership completely loses its collective mind - and/or Nolan, for whatever reason, just decides to not do a third Batman film - don't look for any official announcement for quite a while. WB wants to (justifiably) get every cent it can from TDK, and Nolan has a penchant for playing it close to the vest. Just reread threads on all the crazy-ass rumors about TDK that didn't come true as you read things like Cher being cast (I mean, come on).

Given what the result was for TDK, I'm happy to simply speculate as a fan and let the creative powers involved take their time to come up with a really strong third film.

Nolan could be looking at one of the richest (if not the richest) deals a director has ever inked for the next Batman movie. He'll once again have creative control and a blank check from the studio, which won't be a problem for WB since he brought both BB and TDK in on schedule and under-budget. Nolan will do at least one more Batman movie, but he will be holding his cards very close to his chest until he's ready to focus his full attention on the project.

From what I understand, he's currently taking a much deserved break. Rumor has it that he will begin prepping another movie "soon". Most expect it to be the big screen adaptation of "The Prisoner". If this turns out to be the case, he'll probably start filming sometime next spring ('09).

As for the next Batman, I wouldn't be at all surprised if work on the script is well under way.

Gary Oldman made that Riddler comment during a interview awhile back and he would be someone in the know - so I believe we're getting Riddler (and Catwoman) in the third film.

#1. Cher (doesn't even need to be discussed)
#2. Confirmed cast member Johnny Depp as The Riddler (was and is only a rumour to begin with)
#3. Title is The Caped Crusader (yeah, whatever)

Steve, the Depp news was and still is only a rumor, but make no mistake, a lot of Hollywood A-listers are going to want to be in the next Batman movie in the wake of the huge success of TDK.

If Nolan does intend to shoot another movie next year, than filming for the next Batman flick won't commence until the spring/summer of 2010 for a summer 2011 release. And if Nolan does return, it'll be a major surprise if he shoots anywhere other than Chicago again. The city has turned out to be the perfect setting for his vision of Gotham City.

Concerning the villains. There were two rumored pairs that Nolan and co. were going to choose from. Riddler and Catwoman (who the vast majority of both the media and the industry believe will be used), and Penguin and Talia al Ghul. Again, we probably won't have official confirmation either way until sometime next year.

Though I would poo-poo on the idea of having Talia come to Gotham specifically looking for Bruce, I could see the possibility of having her show up covertly to try to get at the men behind the death of her mother...which could be tied in with the Penguin. So that would place Batman in the middle of a quasi-gang war between Talia and her little band of whatever vs the Penguin and his network of thugs. I could see that working and offering some interesting story advantages.
I still think Riddler/Catwoman offers up the possibilities of things we haven't seen before (I can envision a good chase over the rooftops between the Bat and the Cat as she tries to get away after a high rise heist)- The Riddler also plays to Nolans apparent affinity for puzzles and game playing via plotting.
Either way, I'm sure he'll put more thought into the endevour than the studio head seems to be with the entire DC roster at his disposal. In fact, I think Nolan could set them straight on the proper approach to many of these in a 30 minute sit down. Wb should be looking to counter program its superhero properties to make sure they all distinguish themselves rather than mining the same tone and having them blur into each other. Batman 3 might end up a great movie, but it will underperform if the audience has been over-saturated with 'dark and gritty' before it even shows up.
