Help – Corrupted Excel File

Ok, so I maintain this large Excel model for the finances of the company I work for. It has links to several other files and large amounts of data itself. Anyway, I need to update it with new financial info. However just recently, whenever I try to calculate this model (due to the size, I have the options set to Manual Calc) The “Microsoft has encountered an error and needs to close” box of death. Excel did attempt to repair the file, but it lost all formatting. It was an easy fix to restore the formatting, and it seemed to be working, but it eventually started to crash again. I may be able to go back to a previous version, but I could be potentially losing weeks worth of work, and I may not have the time to redo what would need to be done. Does anyone here have any experience dealing with corrupted files and possibly fixing them?

Re: Help – Corrupted Excel File

Have you tried copying the numerical data into a new spreadsheet and then installing the needed formatting to the new excel file?

Er, backup?

Short of that Nathan's suggestion is a good one. Hell, you should be able to bring over the formatting as well. Just click on the blank button where the column letters and row numbers meet, select "copy" from the "Edit" menu and paste the whole kit'n'kaboodle into a new, blank spreadsheet. Save that to a new name and you'll probably be good to go. (You can then delete the original and rename the new file.)

BTW, we also have a forum dedicated to computers and HT PCs, where you will probably get a lot more responses. You might ask a moderator to move your thread to it.

Joe

Re: Help – Corrupted Excel File

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have backups, but if I went back to one it would mean having to redo alot of work.

I found a solution that seems to have worked so far (knock on wood) I saved the file as an .xml and then saved it back again to .xls This was reccommended by Microsoft. The only drawback is that it seemed to add another 20 megs to my file. But it's better than it not working.
