Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras? (Or: Will BABY MAMA BD have all DVD features?)

Saw this on thedigitalbits

Universal has announced Baby Mama for DVD and Blu-ray release on 9/9. The DVD (SRP $29.98) will include deleted scenes, an alternate ending, audio commentary (with writer/director Michael McCullers, producer Lorne Michaels and cast members Tina Fey and Amy Poehler) and 2 featurettes (Saturday Night Live: Legacy of Laughter and From Conception to Delivery: The Making of Baby Mama!). It looks like the Blu-ray (SRP $39.98) will only include the commentary.

Decided to go with a BD-25 instead of a 50 maybe? Anyway, I have a standing policy not to buy BDs that drop substantial extras that the DVD gets. I know extras are secondary to the feature, but why should I pay a premium and not get everything the DVD offers?

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras

Given that officially announced Universal BDs have the DVD features plus BD extras such as U-Control, BD-Live, etc, this is either an exception to the rule or incorrect information.

Perhaps this thread needs to be retitled to only point out "Baby Mama" or at least be given a question mark, since this is not an official announcement.

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras

I'd be surprised if this were true, if it is will skewer em on it if I get them in...

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras

I think this is just conjecture on the part of thedigitalbits. The wording of the announcement ("It looks like...") suggests that they don't know this for certain.

To be honest, is Baby Mama really the kind of disc we're looking to for voluminous extras anyway?

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras

if they are on the sd dvd, then yes.

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras

Fair enough, but what I'm saying is that all TDB has stated is that "it looks like..." They really don't know what will be on the BD, and given the extras announced for the SD disc, I'd really be surprised if they didn't show up on BD. Uni didn't skimp on extras when they were HD DVD exclusive, unless the extras weren't on the SD releases in the first place.

Except for KNOCKED UP, which didn't include practically anything from the second disc of SD extras.

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras

This ( Universal to Birth 'Baby Mama' on Blu | High-Def Digest ) link says:

"Extras shared between both versions include audio commentary with writer/director Michael McCullers and Fey and Poehler, a pair of featurettes ("From Conception to Delivery: The Making of Baby Mama," "Saturday Night Live: Legacy of Laughter"), deleted scenes and an alternate ending."

Why would they skip 2 featurettes and Deleted scenes? Well, I guess we have to wait for the confirmed specs.

(I also agree that the title is misleading - nothing is confirmed yet)

I agree. It seems like a lot of sites are reporting release dates off retail order sheets before special features have been finalized/announced. There have been a few other Universail BDs that looked like they were not going to have the same features only to have them when the official press release comes out.

Missed that the first time through. I left the original title but clarified it.

Apart from the outtakes and trailer, everything (including the documentary) could be covered by U-Control, and BD-Live could have the rest. Perhaps we should wait and see how it shakes out.

Um, okay. Why not? It can utilize PiP or bring up bits from the docu at any point.

i would like to control when i'm able to watch the features, not be controlled into watching the movie to see the features.

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras (Edit:Baby Mama BD may not have all DVD features)

I find it ironic that on one hand we're complaining about the lack of lossless audio on some releases and on the other lack of extras, but here is an instance where two of the three horror films referenced that might be dropping extras are gaining lossless audio.

Ideally, we would all like to 'have our cake and eat it too', but given the realities of Blu-ray Disc production (i.e. BD25 vs. BD50 availability), which would you rather have lossless audio or extras? I'll take the lossless audio every time.

Paul you make a good point.

i guess after thinking about it, if I needed to choose i would rather have the lossless audio.

I'll take the lossless audio. Especially in this case since I already have the Thing doc on the DVD. But lossless is more important to me than extras. However, we shouldn't have to choose.

"40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up" seems to have all the extras, with "U-Control".

EDIT: Link has a mistake, sorry. U-Control tracks were already on the HD DVD versions..

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras (Edit:Baby Mama BD may not have all DVD features)

Doomsday is a BD25 without the theatrical version which appears on the DVD version.

New Line has done the same with Harold and Kumar 2. BD only has unrated cut while DVD has both versions. ps. Digital copy for that is WINDOWS only as well.

Here's how the studios are screwing over BD (and Mac) consumers.

Wow, two whole titles! Universal actually includes both versions on all of the Sept 30 comedies, so it's not as if Universal is making a habit out of it.

Although, unrated copies overwhelmingly sell better than their counterparts, so why include a version on either the same disc (which degrades quality) or another disc that won't sell enough to make money back? This is especially true of "Doomsday", which was an incredibly violent movie.

I fail to see how providing what the majority of customers what they want as screwing them over. In fact, that seems like just the opposite.

I would always prefer "both versions" (especially with these "Dir Cut/Extended/etc"-versions). It´s not just "blood and gore" that these "Unrated"-versions have, so sometimes hard to say... Even films like "AvP2" had dialogue scenes etc. And IMO, some of these "Unrated"-comedies just go too far for my taste (so I kinda prefer the kiddie-versions.. ).

..and with “seamless branching" and 50gb, the quality issues are hardly not something that they should worry about.

At least with Fox and "Digital Copy", it´s working in both Mac and Windows. From Mac to iTunes (and from there to your video-enabled iPod, iPhone or Apple TV) or PC and Windows Media Player (from there to your Windows PlaysForSure-compatible portable device).

Not that I would ever need one..

Re: Universal Now Screwing BD of Extras? (Or: Will BABY MAMA BD have all DVD features?)

Ron has posted the press release.

Knowing how Universal used U-Control on their HD DVDs, it certainly sounds like they've incorporated a number of the DVD special features via that route. Whether or not one likes U-Control (and I'm not a fan), it's hardly "screwing" anyone. I've re-edited the thread title somewhat.

How about changing the title to 'Universal not screwing Baby Mama'.
