It aired from 8:10 to 9:10, my DVR recorded 8:00 to 9:00. Not much point watching without the last 10 minutes. I may resort to watching it on the website, but I'm afraid it won't be quite the same on a little 15 inch screen with tinny speakers...

That bites. I'm not a big fan of watching stuff online either but I do it when I 'have' to. If it makes you feel any better, the episode ran until 10:07 EST so if you watch what you have DVRed and then catch the rest online, that'll be three less minutes that you have to watch online at least.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

I'd think you'd watch the 50 minutes you have recorded on your DVR on your wonderful TV screen and just watch the 10 minutes you missed on the 15 inch screen with tinny speakers.

I don't like how Olivia constantly ends up chasing bad guys by herself. It doesn't ring true to me at all. She had a solid lead, which would make you think the place would be crawling with cops, but in no time flat there she is off by herself chasing the bad guy.

Strangely, Walter stepped over the line of zany charm to forced zany charm to me a few times tonight.

The kid was an interesting character, though. I've no idea what Olivia said to the doctor to get her help in hiding a kid so well that the CIA won't be able to find him.

And yes, it was pretty amazing how American Idol ran over and pushed Fringe back. I was wondering if perhaps there was a presidential speech or something.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Haven't decided whether I'm going to watch 50 minutes on the DVR or just dump the episode. Way to promote Fringe, Fox.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Watched both American Idol and Fringe tonight, didn't really pay really close attention, but did notice one strange thing.

On Idol they had this really odd bald guy in the audience. Just sat there, no emotion. I'd swear it was the guy from Fringe who showed up right at the end of the episode. I think he's been around before, maybe part of a bigger story line.

Didn't record them, so can't doublecheck, but the guy on Idol really stood out, very purposely put there.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

The bald man on Fringe is "The Observer" he is supposedly in every episode, missed the end of Fringe after she killed(?) the Artist. Missed the Observer opn Idol also.

Glad the show is back, one of my favorite shows.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Way to go FOX. I suspect it's their way of combating DVR-itis (typical FOX behavior). For those who don't want to wait to see the postage stamp size re-run here's the skinny (spoilerized) from TV.COM. I picked it up from a few seconds before my DVR cut out and it should give you enough information to stay up to date with the series.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The FBI stop and search the traffic at the intersection, and check drivers against their sketch. The Artist drives up in his van and Olivia recognizes him. When she asks to see the back of his van, she notices a yellow evergreen air freshener on the rear-view window. He drives off but Olivia opens fire and the van crashes. She chases him over a fence to a nearby cemetery. He comes at her with a knife, and in the struggle she turns the knife on him, killing him.

Later, Olivia calls Broyles and asks for her help. She then goes to see Dr. Winick and brings her to the lab. Olivia tells the Child that he'll be going with her to a home where a family will take care of him. Olivia kisses the Child and wishes him well.

Eliot isn't thrilled to hear that the Child mysteriously disappeared… according to Broyles. Broyles claims the Child disappeared from his security detail, wonders how the Child got in the underground chamber in the first, and suspects they'll ever understand everything about him. Eliot just smiles and leaves.

Olivia arrives home as Ella and Rachel are playing Simon Says. Olivia joins in with them.

Winick is driving the boy to his new home when they pass the Observer on the street. The Child stares at him, and the Observer turns and walks away.

Whether they like it or not, it's the ONLY way I watch TV, so if it's not DVR'd, it's not watched.

I dumped it from my DVR in a fit of rage when I saw Adam Lambert on American Crapfest at the 5 minute mark (if I wanted to listen to screeching and wailing, I'd step on my cat's tail). Actually the sight of Adam Lambert made me want to throw the DVR out into the street, and rip my head from my body and throw it after the DVR, so by only erasing Fringe, I thought I was being remarkably restrained.

- Walter.
I'm glad I watched it live and so was able to catch it. Since the live audience counts a lot more than the DVR'd audience in the ratings, they were trying to increase the ratings and hurt the 9 and 10 PM shows on other channels.

I thought it was a good episode. I suggest that you do watch your 50 minutes and then go online to catch the end.

I did go online where I got to see a black rectangle with a white arrow thingy making a circle in the middle of it.
After a while I got bored and decided to go on with my life.

So I guess I wait for Blu-ray?

There is also a player at Watch Fringe | Episodes Online Free that you could try. [I haven't tried this, but I saw that it was there.]

In any case, the episode was not heavy on continuity and a quick summary of the episode is probably all that anyone needs to follow along to the next one.

I was thinking the same thing.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Or, if the player on the Fox site doesn't work, there's always Hulu.

But, I personally couldn't imagine deleting a show I like off of my DVR only because the show previous to it went late (I've got it set to 3 minutes of padding and I still missed some). I mean, sure, I was annoyed that it made the recording cut off a little, but I like the show, so that'd be more of a loss to me than it would be to Fox, if I deleted it.

Like everyone else said, I don't really see a problem with watching the show on the TV for 47 minutes, and then watching the last two or three minutes online.

I guess I'm a little biased though, because I use a computer anyway as a DVR, so I can stream Hulu directly to my TV, but it wasn't even worth doing that for the few minutes (its a pain to have to skip ahead to the end of the show using the plugin I'm using for Hulu right now).

So are we suposed to assume that the child was an Observer Child?

That's the impression I got from it, yeah.

Just based on the end, I'd have to say yes.

I'd also say that Olivia does have some special quality. Last episode, she passes the test and diffuses the bomb. This episode, she connects with the Observer child almost immediately. She is almost certainly some sort of 'bridge' between the two worlds described in the German book.

I had to watch the end on Hulu too. Inconvenient, but no biggie.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

So what did the kid survive on down there? I didn't see anything edible. There were a lot of leaves on the floor though, which is weird for a sealed off underground room.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

Rats and roaches, according to Walter. But, he's not exactly human. Maybe he didn't eat anything. His body didn't reject the nutrition it was given intraveneously, but we were never shown him eating anything or relieving himself (which was mentioned).

I deleted it without watching it because of the overspill.

But, there were circumstances. My local affiliate screwed up, as they have done so before. I went to watch my copy, and there was a big "FOX 4 AVAILABLE IN HD!" logo on the screen, and I could hear American Idol audio. I tried to fast-forward to see if it cleared up once Fringe started, but it wouldn't move. After a couple of seconds, it jumped to the end of the recording and asked if I wanted to delete it. So, I went back to the beginning and decided to let it play without fast-forwarding. The logo went away and it instead went to black (still with audio). I deleted and watched online.

I think in this case, Fox wasn't playing a game with screwing up other shows. Idol went over, and that's their bread-and-butter. They need to either think about what it does to their own shows, or figure out how to send out a signal that can tell the DVR, "We need a few extra minutes!" I don't get why some programs will continue to record when they go over the allotted time and others won't.

They do piss my off by running Terminator over an extra minute. They don't even use the extra minute--it's just recording time on the DVR. But, the DVR won't let me end a program early. I have to make alternate arrangements to watch Flashpoint, since the DVR says, "Can't record more than two programs, and Terminator's already on versus Friday Night Lights!" Won't be a problem after this week, though.

I wouldn't blow off the episode of Fringe completely, in any case. It was a good one.

I just learned that Fringe Television - Fan Site for the FOX TV Series Fringe has an entry "Fringe Episode 115: What You Missed Because of American Idol" which has the last 6:39 of the episode.

Re: Fringe - By J.J. Abrams

I've never seen Fringe before, so excuse my lack of knowledge. Not sure this is news for you guys, just read on a Trek site that they are in talks with Leonard Nimoy to play some guy named Bell. Nimoy enjoyed coming out of retirement to work with JJ Abrams on the Trek film, so maybe he'll become a semi regular on Fringe.

Thanks Neil!
That was on YouTube and I never have any trouble playing them.

Glad to see it for myself and now that I know how frakin' important that previous show is I'll add 30 minutes to Fringe.

"Some guy?" Do you mean William Bell, head of Massive Dynamics?

I think they should have gotten Chevy Chase.

My own fault. I didn't learn from last week and it cut off. Still, Idol . . . bring your shit in on time, dammit. Come on.
