That's what I keep saying. Our calendars end every 12 months and the world doesn't end. We just go buy a new one. The Mayans just died off before they could publish the next version.

I'm a sucker for Emmerich so, I'll be seeing this. He was the brain child of one of my favorite sci-fi movies (which spawn numerous TV shows that I enjoy) of all time: Stargate. I love that movie.

Gotta change the date in that chart to 2009. ID4 is actually #19 all time.

He sure loves trashing the White House, huh? How does one think of rolling an aircraft carrier over it, anyway?

Emmerich's a modern day Cecil B.De Mille, the critics and film snoots hate him but the public, bless em, don't give a shit and turn up in their millions to see his latest epic. Who cares about the tepid dialogue? Show me the money! A massive alien invasion, cities destroyed, mankind on the verge of extinction, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

I hope this guy keeps getting money to make films. Films like these rank near the top of my must see films.

He sure has milked that obvious fluke for all its worth.

Eyepopping spectacle, that's the ticket laddie. When filmmakers spend millions on state of the art visual effects destroying the planet for a film, I want to see it! I'm not going to turn my nose up and moan "What is this? oh dear I'm afraid this is not my cup of tea. I'm certain the acting will be ghastly and the script an abomination, no no this will not do at all."

Well the point I was making with the link is that ID4 was, for a while at least, the number two film worldwide. Which was no mean feat at the time. The Dark Knight for all it's success never quite made it to no.2. Of course this is in unadjusted dollars, if you were counting ticket sales than even Titanic will drop several notches. Star Wars would be no.2 and a 70 year old film would be at the top.

Re: 2012 (Roland Emmerich + Disaster + END OF THE WORLD!)

I don't get some of the snobbery in this thread. If you don't like this sort of movie, don't watch it.

I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing this. The whole purpose of going to a movie it to escape reality for a while. This movie will certainly do that.

In spite of what i said earlier i know i wont be able to stay away from this movie.

love the disaster stuff.

In retrospect, you folks are correct. Far be it for me to rain on someone else's parade.

Hope it turns out to be everything your heart desires.

Or you can just wait till 2012 then look out your window.

I assume they're building a modern day Ark that will at least hold one giraffe.

Is the city with the canyon running through it Vegas?

I don't really think you can call it a fluke. Emmerich's last disaster pic, The Day After Tomorrow, was a huge hit and most of his films have been very popular. In fact, his only film to gross less than $70M domestically is his debut, Universal Soldier, back in 1992.
10,000 BC (2008): $270M world ($95M domestic)

The Day After Tomorrow (2004): $544M world ($187M domestic)

The Patriot (2000): $215M world ($113M domestic)

Godzilla (1998): $379M world ($136M domestic)

Independence Day (1996): $817M world ($306M domestic)

Stargate (1994): $197M world ($72M domestic)

Universal Soldier (1992): $36M domestic

So hate him if you want, but the studios love him because his films make money. They're not high art, but they sell lots of tickets and that's what the studio really cares about at the end of the fiscal year.

Re: 2012 (Roland Emmerich + Disaster + END OF THE WORLD!)

That trailer was amazing. I think this is the disaster movie I've been waiting all my life to see: Tidal waves the size of mountains! check. Earthquakes so powerful they break up entire continents! check. The government building ships to escape the planet! check. Wow. I hope this isn't gonna be one of those movies with happy endings where everything turns out ok. For once, I think they finally made a movie with balls where the destruction actually DOESN'T have a cheery ending, which I think is how all disaster movies should be. When the movie ends, we can all go home and think: "thank God it was only a movie, but wasn't it a great ride?"
By 1/2 way through the trailer I was laughing my arse off at the spectacle of it all. I'll rent it.
Just caught the new trailer on quicktime and had to come post. The effects in this movie look absolutely amazing! Gave me chills just watching it. I also loved ID4, and The Day After Tomorrow so looking forward to this alot.

Whoa... I'd forgotten how spectacular this looks, takes my breath away. It's going to look humungous on a huge screen.

Is there a story that goes with it or just a series of random disasters happening worldwide? I hope it's not the sun going wonky again (e.g. Knowing) or the Earths core playing silly buggers (e.g. The Core).
Didn't this guy do Day after tomorrow?  It was impressive to see, but not more than once due to the story.  Hopefully this has something more to it, but will be fun to watch regardless.

I love the self-reference and one-up-manship of going from simply blowing up the White House with a giant lazer beam to crushing it with an aircraft carrier!

I wouldn't assume they're saving any animals except maybe livestock. Looks like they're going to scoop as many Americans as possible into these giant spaceships and ride this calamity out in orbit.

I like the term "disaster porn".  This will have about as much plot, characterization,  and acting.

The special effects look great, but the dialogue is exactly the cookie cutter stuff I expect from RE.  But, the trailer has me a lot more interested than 10,000 BC did after its teaser was ruined by the actual trailer.

I don't think they are spaceships.  Just ships that can survive the calamity until things die down.  And I do believe they are taking animals like Noah's Ark...Since a Giraffe really isn't livestock.  ;)

This trailer blew me away. I loved ID4, didn't care for Day After Tomorrow and didn't even bother with 10,000 B.C., but this definitely looks like something I'll see. :tu:

Yeah, it took me a second to realize it was for 2012 the movie and not some other entity trying to take advantage of the 2012 mythology.  I'm really looking forward to seeing this, even though it's gonna suck, plot wise.

I saw the first commercial for the IHC today while watching Ninja Warrior and man did that spook me out. Great marketing for this film!
Just curious.  How are they planning on surviving?  Are those spaceships?  Or is the planet just going to be all messed up and they will have to rebuild?
The website lists three strategies they're employing:
  1. Sealed, underground bunkers:
    From movie '2012'
  2. Floating Cities:

  3. Space Colonization:

Thanks Adam.  I guess they are leaving it vague about what is causing the end of the world and what will happen.

From what I could tell from the trailer, it's supposed to be caused by some cyclical but extremely rare solar alignment.
