Running HDMI & Component at the Same time - Some help please!

I've researched the topic, but could use some help in my understanding on the following...

I have a Pioneer RPTV that will only accept component video, no HDMI.

I am thinking of adding a new Onkyo 606 amp to my set up, so I can access the new HD audio formats. But of course, I can currently only use HDMI for audio - I still need component for the video. By perusing the Onkyo's online manual, it appears that you can assign the audio & video inputs individually for each slot, eg "DVD" could have HDMI sound input, and component video input. Am I right?

If so, then what I ideally need to do is run component video & HDMI audio from my PS3 & Toshiba HD-D2 HD DVD player to the Onkyo.

Reading online, it appears that the PS3 is happy with having the audio & video outputs chosen individually (please tell me if I'm wrong) but I don't know about the HD DVD player - it might be an all or nothing scenario.

Can those who need to have component & HDMI co-exist let me know if I have this right? If not, any enlightenment very welcome!

You've got it right...except I don't know about the HD-D2 part. I'm doing the same sort of thing, but with different gear (I do have a PS3 though) of similar capability.

I also do not find any noticeable degradation in the component signals going through a decent modern AVR, unlike in some previous generations: much wider bandwidth now than used to be typical. This is kinda convenient, as well as the nice newer audio formats, from a new AVR.

Thanks, Craig! I've had a chance to peruse the HD-D2's manual since I wrote the above, and it says that the D2 supports simultaneous component & HDMI output, so hopefully this should all work.
