Just how well known is DR SYN.

I'll be honest, I've never heard of it before this release. And I've been a longtime Disney fan. I can see why many stores aren't carrying it, or only a few copies of it. If I've never heard of it, I'm sure many who stock the shelves or order DVDs haven't.

I did buy it, so will be watching it.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

Collectors buy a whole set. Wave 8, in this case.
They should have anticipated the demand for that reason alone.

(For two days Annette wasn't available on Amazon, all of a sudden. I'm glad I didn't move to one of the - more expensive - third party sources: they carry it again.)

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

It is one of those releases that will appeal only to those of us of a certain age who saw it, or heard about it growing up. I wasn't born when it was broadcast, but I remember Dr. Syn as a creepy presence in the Disney universe well into the '70s.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

I looked in several Best Buys. They all had several Annettes. Only one had any Donald Ducks. And they were all out of Dr. Syn.

And this is the first year that Sam's Club didn't sell the Treasures.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

My local Sam's Club (Mishawaka, IN...next to South Bend) had all 3 in stock on release day.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

Neither Sam's nor Costco had them around here last week, which surprised me. I did see three copies of Dr. Syn at a local Target, though.

Maybe these low print runs are having an effect.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

Costco had a bunch of all three, and I snapped up a Dr Syn (pretty much site unseen) without a problem. The animation from Disney never did anything for me, but the live action stuff rules. And how can I say no to Number 6?

By the way, I did open some of my old ones at the same time as I opened the new ones. In some cases there was significant tape residue on the cases from the DVD tape seals. I tried to get it off with tape, which worked sometimes but not as well as in the past with some CD cases.

Wiping the tin case with a little Goo Gone on a cotton ball should take care of that.

I knew there was something I could do about that sticky stuff, but didn't remember for the life of me what it was. I finally popped open the five WDT I got from the DD sale and Donald V4 last night. Some didn't have residue at all and others were a smidge worse.

Hey, does anyone know why "Rugged Bear" was put in "the Vault"? I watched it twice but I honestly couldn't figure out what was "offensive" about it...

The BF and I watched it last night (along with "Uncle Donald's Ants"). Our best guess was the prolific wielding of a shotgun toward the bear during the entire episode. It would have been appreciated if Maltin gave more info other than a :29 clip...

IIRC, When listing reasons for censoring, withholding, or "vaulting" such material, Disney normally refers to it as "comic gunplay". That's the explanation for why "The Martins and the Coys" segment was excised from "Make Mine Music".

Ken, maybe you can answer another question then. What was wrong with "Uncle Donald's Ants"? Did someone object to the ants talking with some sort of accent?

I believe Colin called that one in his review -- The bit where the ants are depicted as stereotypical primitive tribesmen.

A lot of these seem like quite a stretch, but at least the shorts are available.

Gotcha. I hadn't read Colin's review...I like to go into my own reviews without having someone else's opinion in my head.

Yeah, I didn't see "Ants" as one of the stretches. I don't much care for the "Vault" concept - I think it's too PC and overly protective - but if one of these shorts qualifies, it's "Ants"!

Disney really would "Vault" "Rugged" because of the gun??? That's kooky. There are so many cartoons out there with equivalent - or greater - "comic gunplay" that this makes no sense.

I understand the "Vaulting" of potentially offensive shorts, and I realize that ANYTHING can be offensive to SOMEONE. Heck, I hate hunting, so I should be horribly offended! But I think the "Vaulting" of "Rugged" due to the guns is silly...

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

Which it got me to thinking about Song of the South last night. If a little non-explanation explanation from Maltin got these shorts on the discs, a 1:00 intro on SotS should do the trick.

Someone's overly sensitive, I think, about this stuff.

Disney's lawyers want to make sure that if some kid gets his hands on a shotgun and shoots someone, Elmer Fudd takes the rap.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11: CHIP & DALE

I first posted this on the GAC forum and reposted here including info obtained by other posters.

FYI, with Donald-4 , all Chip & Dale cartoons which have Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and pluto can be found on the Disney Treasures EXCEPT the 3 cartoons without DD,MM, Pluto. they are:

1951: CHICKEN IN THE ROUGH
1952: TWO CHIPS AND A MISS
1954: THE LONE CHIPMUNKS

A few years ago, I bought 2 DVDs of Chip & Dale ("Chip & Chap" in German).
The 2 DVDs which as still available and are called:

"Chip & Chap - Die Hörnchen sind los!"
"Chip & Chap - Lustige Streiche"

There is a web-site listing all the Chip & Dale cartoons - it has not been updated for Donald-4.

Duckfilm.de | Disney Cartoon Index: A- und B-Hörnchen (Chip 'n' Dale)

"TWO CHIPS AND A MISS" and "CHICKEN IN THE ROUGH" are found in Germany on the 2nd DVD "Lustige Streiche".
Amazon.de: Chip & Chap - Lustige Streiche: DVD & Blu-ray

They are also on a similar DVD in the UK:
Chip 'n' Dale - Vol. 1: Chip N Dale: Amazon.co.uk: DVD

and in the US on:
Amazon.com: Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 4 - Starring Chip 'n Dale: Disney: Movies & TV

The only DVD that contains the 3rd cartoon "THE LONE CHIPMUNKS" seems to be on as a bonus feature on the Davy Crockett movie set.

Amazon.com: Davy Crockett -Two Movie Set: Fess Parker, Buddy Ebsen, Basil Ruysdael, Hans Conried, William Bakewell, Kenneth Tobey, Pat Hogan, Helene Stanley, Nick Cravat, Don Megowan, Mike Mazurki, Jeff Thompson (III), Henry Joyner, Campbell Brown, R

I hope that these 3 cartoons will eventually be released on a future Disney Treasure.

But if some kid tries to fly with an umbrella they're SOL.

I'm confident any ZORRO episodes released as a Walt Disney Treasures set would be in black & white. Not only that, I'm sure they'd be restored to exactly how they were originally broadcast in 1957 (complete with the full opening and trailers for the following week's episode).

Or, if the four were done originally in black and white, did Disney colorize them in 1995 along with the 78 regular episodes? I think the hour Zorros were shown in the dead of night on the Disney Channel some years back. Anybody remember if they were in B&W, color, or colorized?

The hour-long episodes were filmed in black & white and have not to my knowledge been colorized.

As do I. I never had the chance to see the actual miniseries, but the novelization was in my school's library and I recall reading it and REALLY wanting to see the mini. I need to get my butt in gear and get my hands on a copy.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

I got the chance to watch the first part of Dr. Syn last night. To be honest, I was completely entranced with it. The characters might not be the most complex or well drawn creatures ever committed to film, but it's a fun little adventure.

I did a double take when Scarecrow mentioned blowing someone's head off (paraphrasing). Definitely not Disney!

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

Dr. Syn's already selling for $52 at Amazon by 3rd party sellers. There's no indication on their site that Amazon has more on the way...

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

Looks like most of the recent auctions (last 7 days) have closed around the $25 mark, however the ones closing in the next couple days are already at $34 and $61.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures: Wave 8 - 11/11

If a company knows they could sell more of something, like this "Dr. Syn" set, why would they refuse to make more copies?
