Re: New Picinic at Hanging Rock 3 DVD Set
I have the new 3-disc set. The transfer of the director's cut looks identical to the Australian and German editions that I used to own. The transfer of the original cut looks like an old (mid-1990s) digital master that was 1.66:1 non-anamorphic that was scaled-up to 1.66:1 anamorphic, despite what the disclaimer before the film says. It's watchable. I do find it curious that prime 35mm elements of the 110-minute 1975 cut don't exist, though. I prefer the shorter, more ambiguous and elliptical cut, but it was great to see the original cut after almost fifteen years. The documentary, ported over from the Oz set is excellent, as are the other extras. All that is missing is a Weir commentary, but he isn't prone to doing them. The documentary covers everything and this isn't a film to talk over, describe and disect. This is the definitive release until the (Criterion?) Blu-Ray comes along.
