It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Thank god...I have a 6 a.m. flight on the 12th and wasn't relishing the thought of having to pick one up at the circus the night before.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

I think last year's smooth run is going to make the insanity of this year's forced contract setup debacle even more ridiculous. I'll probably check out 2.0 on my iTouch on the 11th and wait till saturday to get the 3G.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Given the more expensive 3G contract, I'm going to stick with my current iPhone for awhile - at least until there's a 32GB phone. The 2.0 firmware and AppStore are going to make the 1st gen iPhone seem like a whole new device anyway.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Stupid me. Already took a day off from work and plan to get
on line at 5am for this friggin' phone.

Not taking the chance they will sell out the first day.

WHAT???? You were the biggest naysayer, what changed??? =)

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Naysayer?

Only in the respect that I felt that this phone had very
little new to offer current owners other than 3G.

I just hate EDGE. I also don't want to wait a few days and
then hunt around for a store that has a phone in stock.

The best bet if I want this phone is to get it the day it
goes on sale.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

I'm the one who's called AT&T every name in the book - evil cooperate bstrds with a Sith at the helm, etc.
I want one too. I'll spit on the pavement on the way in, but probably have fun once I'm safe in my office

Judging from the 3G coverage maps, this is a Big city item. My north end of ATL is good, Ron's NYC is good.
If either of us travel west by more then 30 miles it drops.
The central states have a ton of dead areas.
The southern Atlantic quarter of Florida is Blue. Looks like the biggest hot spot in the country.

This is definitely what I'm planning on doing (although my phone has been acting a little janky lately). I had planned on upgrading and giving my phone to my wifeif she wanted it, but the more expensive contract isn't worth it for me. I don't hate Edge like Ron so I think I can wait. I am often near wi-fi and when I'm actually not Edge does the job for me (although it did it better before the top 30 active posts was replaced by the iSpy page here on the HTF, but I've learned a little more patience )

I am really looking forward to the 2.0 software and I'm sure I'll go check out the new phone once it is released. Which is a really dangerous thing to do...
I was going to be patient with the first one-- just wanted to look and see it in person. Guess how that turned out.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

I will be at the AT&T store at 7:30 Friday morning. But I work there. So while you guys get to leave with your new phones I'll be stuck working an open to close. What really stinks is I don't get to buy one for at least a month because we are blacked out on purchasing one.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Jonathan,

What was it like the last time the iPhone went on sale at
your store? How quickly did you sell out and how many days
till you got new stock in?

Just wondering if standing on line early will be my best bet or not.

Also, there seems to be conspiracy theories that APPLE will not
release larger gig iPhones because they don't want to take away
from sales of their iPods.

If it's like last year we will run out before noon. I would recommend going to an Apple store because they got 10 times as many phones as we did last year. If we do sell out we should get replenished within a day or two.

Jonathan,

If I get on line at AT&T @ 4am for an 8am opening I should be fine, I think.

You should be fine. I think we will sell out by noon, but I don't know how many we are getting.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

One last question you may not be able to answer.

How many iPhones did you initially get last year the day
it went on sale. If you need to do a ballpark figure go ahead.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

I seriously recommend getting your iPhones at the Apple store over the AT&T store based on last years results...

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Why? I bough mine at the AT&T store last year with no problems.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

I live in Birmingham where 3G service is spotty at best.

Since I have WiFi access just about everywhere that I go and the current "cell tower triangulation" pseudo-GPS is more than adequate for my mapping and location needs, I'll be hanging on to my current 8GB iPhone for awhile longer.

I *do* need Contact Search and better integration with Exchange Server, but that (and more) is included with the 2.0 software. There is just no compelling reason for me to upgrade to an "iPhone 3G" at this time. (Now if I could get a 32GB iPhone with a "Video Conferencing" camera and user-replaceable battery, then I'd be in line next Friday morning as well!)

Can you even purchase them at an Apple Store this time around? It was my understanding that if you wanted the subsidized price you *had* to purchase from an AT&T store.

BTW, I've noticed that AT&T has been publishing some videos urging new AT&T customers to come in a day or two prior to Friday to see if they qualify for the subsidized prices and/or to get their credit cleared for purchase:

*** EDIT ***
I just noticed they've also published a video for current iPhone owners wanting to upgrade:

Less than 50.

Hopefully we will get more this year.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Tons of the AT&T stores sold out on day 1 last year, none of the Apple stores did. My understanding is that you can still get the full signup for the 3G in the apple stores this time around even with the 'unbricking' and credit check and other nonsense in store.

Really, this iPhone came up VERY short on expectations.

I missed where you said you were gonna stand in line anyway... I'm sticking with my plan for now, I just dropped $700 on a new fridge since mine died while we were in vegas so I'm not likely to be there day one (but I will pay the apple tax and upgrade my iTouch) but the 3G and GPS are deal sealers for me as far as the iPhone goes and it will be my next phone, and soon.

Smart man. That's what I should be doing, but since I'm giving my wife the old iPhone, I'm going the first day... No waiting in line though. I'll go to the Apple Store Soho on my lunch break. Unless the AT&T Store I see from my work window is totally line free.

At least I didn't buy the original iPhone on day one... (But only because I was vacationing abroad and couldn't...)

Not true -- you can purchase (and get your phone activated) at Apple Stores as well. And for those upgrading (from an iPhone): Here is detailed article on how to move your data from Apple (Via Jon Gruber's Daring Fireball -- best computer/Mac related blog ever -- highly recommended as is The Talk Show podcast he does.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

how will being a current contract iphone user effect buying a new iphine?

from what i can gather over at the mess that is howardforums.com it looks like you will have to pay an extra $200 to get a new phone and get a new 2 year contract.

so $399 and $499.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Every iPhone user with a two year contract is automatically eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 3G for the subsidized price.

In addition to paying the subsidized price for the new iPhone3G, and taking out a new 24 month contract (which will cost about $10 more per month), you'll also be required to pay an $18 "Upgrade Fee".

All the details are in the AT&T-published "How to be iReady for existing iPhone customers" video:

YouTube - AT&T: How Current Customers can be iReady for iPhone 3G

Since I don't have a pressing need for 3G, I'm holding on to my original iPhone for another 12 months. (I may change my mind on this if the third party applications from the "App Store" start to take up too much of my available 8G memory.)

Well that still down from the $35 or $40 or whatever it was "activation fee" that we had to pay our AT&T overlords the first time around.

Re: It's Official: iPhone 3G at 8 a.m. July 11th

Well.... I just got back from playing with the new iPhone at work. First impression? It's ok.

We only got demos in black and let me tell you it is a CSI's wet dream. I like the look of the black, but I hate how it shows every smudge. I do like the way it sits in your hand and it feels less boxy than the current one.

The screen looks exactly like the current one as far as resolution and color.

I played around with the GPS and it worked as advertised. I couldn't take the phone out of the store obviously, so I didn't get to see how well it followed me around.

The App Store is loaded on the phone, but when you click on it it says the store is not available in your country.

The speaker is much improved and sounded much better playing music through it than the old one.

I still want one, but I wouldn't wait in line for more than a hour for it. It's nice, but it's not that big of a step up from the current one. What I really want is the 2.0 software. The 3g and GPS is nice, but the App Store and mobileme are going to be the big things.
