Hey y'all! I purchased a Sony STR-DG720 so that I can finally get LPCM from my PS3 via HDMI. This receiver does not feature analogue inputs, which is how my HD-DVD player has been hooked up. My question is will the Tosh send 5.1/7.1 LPCM via HDMI? Thanx in advance!

Yep. The A1 decodes internally and sends the info via PCM track to your receiver.Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI

Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI
I'm an HDMI newb, so please be patient with me. My receiver is a Sony STR-DG720. I've got a PS3 plugged into the "Blu-Ray" HDMI input. The HD-A1 is plugged into the "DVD" HDMI input. The PS3 works without a hitch. I LOVE lossless audio! But for the life of me, I can't get the receiver to recognize the HD-DVD player. It's not the cable - I initially used it with the PS3. The HD-A1's set up menu isn't as detailed as the PS3. I'm at a loss. Any tips for an HDMI newb?

Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI
I've got an STR-DG910, which is similar to your receiver (last year's model, but same basic family). I'm running an HD-A3 through my "DVD" HDMI input. So it should definitely be do-able. A few questions...1) When you say the receiver won't recognize the HD-A1, do you mean for the higher-end audio CODECS (DD+/Tru-HD/etc), or for multi-channel decoding? Or do you mean not at all, period -- no image/no sound/no nothing?
2) Do you have anything plugged into the component video "DVD" ins? That SHOULDN'T matter, since HDMI is supposed to take precedence over other devices on the same input bank. But just checking.

Thanx for the reply.
1) I mean it's not recognizing it at all. No sound. It recognizes that the HDMI input is being used, but no speakers light up on the display as is the case with the PS3.
2) No other inputs are being used.

Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI
sounds like there is a setting that is not set right. Check the set up in the A1 and see if it has an "override" for the audio. If you were using analog before, it might still be trying to use analog. I had trouble with my cable box cutting out the sound when I used HDMI, so I used an override to set up the sound via optical and it works perfectly now. It might be something similar to this.Good luck.
Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI
I think I know what my issue is - The HD-A1 will not do component and HDMI at the same time. In order to use HDMI for audio, I need to use it for video. Fair enough. There might be a snag in that my projector, the Infocus SP4805 will only do HDMI via DVI adaptor. But if I recall, the DG720 doesn't like HDMI/DVI adaptors? Am I right? More importantly, am I out of luck?

Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI
Ah, your setup is a bit different from mine -- My projector has an HDMI in, so I can run HD-A3 [HDMI out] -> [HDMI in] Receiver [HDMI out] -> [HDMI in]Projector . All neat and tidy. The DG series of receivers is nice in that it will transcode component in to HDMI out, which I've taken advantage of... but unfortunately it won't do the inverse.
It's been a while since I dug into the detailed discussions on these receivers, so I can't remember if people were having trouble running a DVI -> HDMI adapters from a source to the receiver's HDMI in, or with running an HDMI -> DVI adapter from the receiver's HDMI out to a display... or both. Hmmmm.

Re: Question about Toshiba HD-A1 and HDMI
So, to make things clear, where are things being plugged in? A1 to receiver and receiver to projector, right? For the A1, you have HDMI, and to the projector you have HDMI with HDMI/DVI converter? There should be a setting in the A1 (I have the A2) that outputs audio through HDMI. Once you choose HDMI Audio Out, you shouldn't have a problem. The HDMI to DVI adapter shouldn't make any difference whatsoever, because your projo only handles video, not audio. The receiver doesn't send the audio through HDMI to your projo.
Also, what audio settings do you have on your PS3? PCM?
"but unfortunately it won't do the inverse."
That's because of copy projection. HDMI (and DVI) have the HDCP protection scheme, which is not supported through component. I haven't yet seen a receiver that will do HDMI to component transcoding.

So can anyone confirm that 2nd and 3rd gen HD-DVD players allow splitting up of video and audio by way of HDMI?
