Summit Entertainment

I was kind of surprised by no one mentioning Steve Nickerson's presentation of Summit's upcoming releases. At first I was nervous about what type of films they had coming out. What a great surprise to find they had several big budget pictures with "A" list stars, including Nicholas Cage, Adrian Brody and Rachel Weisz. Not only that, they have Rian Johnson's next picture, "The Brothers Bloom", Johnson being the director of perhaps the finest noir film in the past 10 years, "Brick". Nickerson's presentation of roughly ten films in various states of completion shows amazing promise and excitement, reminding me of when Dreamworks SKG was formed.

Based on Steve's presentation, this studio may be the one to watch in the coming years. They have the US and international rights to Imagi's upcoming CGI "Astro Boy" picture, an adaption of DC Comics/ Wildstorm's comic "Red", a re-imagining of cult classic "Highlander", and many others. Nickerson also showed our group the Blu-Ray of an upcoming movie of theirs (the name of which escapes me) utilizing a multi-angle feature to get almost a 360 view of a MMA style fight.

Sorry if this sounds a bit like a press release, which it's not, but I think this studio needs some attention. Nickerson comes a bit battle weary from the HD-DVD/BD war, but he was very optimistic about BD and ready to utilize the format to its potential.

Re: Summit Entertainment

Sex Drive will be this year's breakout hit, bank on it. Big wishes for major success for these guys and for Magnolia too. I just wish Mag would have come to talk to us and I REAAALLY appreciate Summit coming to speak to us, especially Mr. Nickerson. Thank you for the awesome presentation!!!!

Re: Summit Entertainment

'Sex Drive' does seem like it will be an intelligent sex comedy akin to that of 'Superbad' instead of gross out like 'Love Guru'.

Also Alex Proyas new film with Nicholas Cage seems interesting as well.

I do have to agree that Nickerson was a joy to listen to and quite possibly gave one of the best presentations out of the three days (minus the '305' guys). I'm actually quite excited for 'Never Back Down' on BD

Yeah it's the one Brendan mentioned--Never Back Down. Did anyone catch the screening? If so, how was the pic?

Happy to see Steve back speaking to us (and thank you, Steve, for the Nature's Colors With the World's Greatest Music BD). Would have been nice to get the REAL story on the parting of ways with Warner over a scotch. Looking forward to Know1ng.

If it was anything like the Kiss of the Spider Woman screening.
It was HORRIBLE.

Whenever Palms/Brenden theaters do these type of DVD screening, they present them in such a horrible way. Black levels are way off. Horrible Uncalibrated pictures. That one of the reasons why I stopped going to Cinevegas.
They ALWAYS have horrible presentations.

They would be better off to present these types of screening in OUR nicely calibrated room.
With sound AND picture being top notch.
Plus it would give SVS nice word of mouth.

Both movies were blu-ray and they have to present them in such a harsh way.
It just doesn't make any sense

Re: Summit Entertainment

Yeah I went up after the KOtSW screening and asked the projectionist about what the source was, as it looked better than DVD but certainly worse than HD or film. To the best of his knowledge, he said it was a 720 Digibeta tape.

I'm spoiled via living in L.A. and seeing film prints at repertory screenings, but this was very disappointing. Can anyone who went to the NBD screening comment on the source/PQ please? One would hope they afforded "Rising Star" Cam maximum resolution.

I did not attend either screening, but I am guessing that the projector that was used for KOTSW was the same one normally used for the video pre-show, which I believe are low-end Christie 480p or 720p portables, and are barely bright enough to display a sharp image on most theatre sceens.

This is what is used at most screenings for the Newport Beach Film Festival that are not 35mm, and most of the filmmakers I've met there are not thrilled with the presentation.

I will say that I did go to a movie recently where they were using the digital cinema projector (2k) to project the pre-show, and boy did it look much better. So, if the Brendan at The Palms ever converts all of their screens to digital, Cinevegas should start to have better presentations.
