NJ and you, license plates and all?

Can somebody enlighten me on perhaps the law about the front license plate and NJ? Apparently, it is illegal to cover "New Jersey" even if it is a tiny little pixel but does that mean the state name has to be visible? I'm thinking about mounting my front plate in my MR2 underneath the bumper and on the grill because it's quite ugly hanging off the front. It might be possible that the plate could be covered a bit, wonder what the law on the book states? does anybody know?

Thanks for the link, looks like a useful thing to have around. I couldn't find anything on license plate, everything seemed to be what to do with old plates and stuff.

Makes me wonder if it is OK if the lettering is covered but not necessarily by a cover or holder. I'd like to mount my license plate by the grill of my MR2, which might make some of the lettering covered by the lower spoiler on the bumper... technically, not a holder or cover....

Hard to tell until you get pulled over for the first time, I guess.

Are you willing to risk $100 for aesthetic reasons?

Not in NJ or Oregon.

Kind of like the law in Illinois (and probably other states) prohibiting car sales on Sunday.

No self-serve fuel here in Oregon, either. We also are not supposed to cover up license plates (particularly the Month & Date stickers), but people do it ALL the time. So many license plate frames cover those stickers to the point that the only thing you can see on them is the color, w/no other info. Since the color pretty much tells you what you need to know I guess the police don't care. Or, perhaps people are racking up numerous tickets for it and don't mind parting with the cash.

I thought I had heard that OR repealed that "can't pump your own gas" statute last year.

I believe, historically, the law to ban self-service in NJ was based on little old ladies being thought of not being able to pump their own gas without injury or blowing up the gas station. Once it was passed, there hasn't been much movement or desire amoung the legislatures to repeal it since gas has generally been cheap in NJ anyway. However, I read a couple of articles every now again about a movement wanting to repeal the self service thing. I am so much for pumping my own gas, which has nothing to do with price of fuel, I hate waiting at some gas stations which have like 8 aisles and one crazy guy trying to run around and service all of them.

We no longer have any required sticker on the plates, for three years, we got stickers to put on the plates for registration but for reasons unknown to me, we don't do that anymore and our inspection stickers are on the lower driver side windshield. I see so many plates with so called illegal covers and many of these illegal covers come with the car when bought at the dealership....

Washington DC doesn't use stickers on the on the plate either and I believe CT just did the same. One reason is that plates in DC and CT were getting stolen for the registration sticker. Many times while visiting my parents in CT I'd see plates stuck to the inside rear window rather than in the plate holder. Harder to steal an entire front window, where DC puts its registration sticker.

One thing in common with DC and CT? Both jurisdictions have high insurance rates and require proof of insurance to register cars. Why buy insurance when you can just "borrow" someone's sticker? Just a guess.

Dennis--Nope, not repealed. You still cannot pump your own gas here. In fact, unless you have a motorcycle or a classic car (whose owners for some reason ARE allowed to pump their own gas at most stations) they actually get mad at you if you even touch the hose, which is really frustrating when they are busy and your car is already full. You still have to wait for the attendant to come over and remove the nozzle from the tank for you.
