That's rough. I considered moving to where the jobs were after college, but I'm not a big city guy and the paychecks at the jobs I'd want wouldn't cover the cost of living.
Rochester was pretty depressing when I lived there, even though there are some really beautiful areas around there. I dunno, it's like a sort of gloom that pervades the rust belt -- and those lake effect winters. If you work for Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb or something, I could see how it'd be tough to escape though.

But if you really like your area and the job opportunity there, it might be better to suffer the gas and commute time than live in a place you just don't love as much.
I'd still be living here for the first few months anyway. If the job's going great, then I'd start looking around up there and see if I could find a place that would satisfy me. If it's rough going, then I stay put, hang in there for a year or two for the resume, and then try to find another job closer to home.

I just started a part-time job that I'm not sure I'll even have time for because the office was right down the street. A lot of the work I can do from here and squeeze in around my other responsibilities, but when I have to go down I definitely plan on walking.
To me, walking to work and back would be one of the highlights of my day.

My only issue with telecommuting is that I'd feel like I never get to leave the office. I like leaving at the end of the day and having a total break from the job. If I was telecommuting, I could see myself getting sucked into working 24/7 with a blackberry and constant email contact.

Re: How far do you commute?

4 miles to the shop each way. But then I hop in the Van and drive to the job sites

I've been telecommuting for almost 15 years and I have never gotten the feeling that I never get to leave the office.

Telecommuting takes a lot of discipline but it certainly beats wasting hours of your life stuck in traffic.

Re: How far do you commute?

About 22-23 miles each way. I avoid the Interstate most of the time. Been doing it for two years now, previously was doing 43 miles each way and HAD to use the Interstates.

Driving a Dodge Neon I get by with 8-9 gallons per week.

Re: How far do you commute?

A couple of months ago, I quit my job where I was terribly unhappy due to a corporate bully of a boss. Plus, my commute was nightmarish. Not so bad distance-wise (it was about 40-50 Km which is around 30 miles I think), but the traffic here in Vancouver is brutal. It just crawls for the most part on the "highway". I was averaging about 12 Kmh (about 5mph) for good part of that commute. So, driving in was at least an hour and driving home was about 1.5 hours. Not fun at all.

Mine is shorter. No stairs. Just a 10 foot walk down the hallway.

Have you tried to sell her on the health aspect of it? Before my work moved (closer to my home) I used to walk a mile and a half to work. When I turned 30 I started seeing my doctor annually. He asked me if I worked out or exercised. I said no. He asked if I watched what I ate, I said no. He asked what kind of job I had, and I said a desk job. He was surprised that I was still in decent shape. He asked if I did any sort of regular activity, like light sports, and I said I was a couch potato.

But then I said that I walked to work, about a mile and a half each way, every weekday. To which he said "That's exercise. You walk about 3 miles more than the average American every day."

Yeah, tell her her butt DOES look fat in those jeans and see how fast she starts biking.

Re: How far do you commute?

2.5 miles. I take my bike whenever its not raining.

I even tried my bike over the winter a few times, but the ice and snow on the sidewalk was less than enjoyable, so I guess I'm just a fair-weather rider.

I've been working here for a year-and-a-half now, and its just unbelieveable to me how much more time I have in the afternoon with no commute. I work until 3:30. When I drive, I'm home at 3:35. When I bike, its 3:40.

Re: How far do you commute?

100 miles round trip, not counting if I take a lunch run. Live in the boonies and work in the nearest city.

The rub is that I have a job that I could telecommute into, but the TPTB decided that they need to "see people in their seats". (Nevermind that our department is basically split between 2 cities and TPTB generally have company cars they drive!!)

Re: How far do you commute?

Used to be 26 miles one way. Just changed jobs, now it's only 10. Takes me about 15 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the afternoon.

I've run into the same culture. I could easily work from home 90% of the time, but the workplace is still an "if you're not there, you're not working" mentality.

And, by the way, you telecommuters just had to come in here and rub it in, even when I asked nicely.

Re: How far do you commute?

26 miles one way on a very easy drive.

Re: How far do you commute?

About 1 mile each way.

Re: How far do you commute?

I don't telecommute. I am self-employed and work from home, while doubling as a stay at home dad. I wasn't trying to rub my 10 foot walk in.

My wife works about 2 miles from our home, but with the major roads she would have to cross and our frequent afternoon thunderstorms, I wouldn't recommend biking to work.

Re: How far do you commute?

From Fremont to Emeryville is about 25 miles so about 50 miles round trip. Luckily I can work from home a couple days a week.

Re: How far do you commute?

The NY Times had an interesting story today about life in the rural exurbs and how it's becoming less tenable these days.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/bu...exurbs.html?hp

I live in the last suburban subdivision in SW Boise - there's nothing but farms and ranches further on. Fortunately I am retired and am still only 12 miles from downtown. And we are on the natural gas pipeline from the fields in western WY so I pay only $100 a month in winter to heat the place.

Re: How far do you commute?

3 minutes one way via car
17 minutes one way via bike

I have my choice but I prefer car these days since the dog in my sig has a cancerous tumor on her nose and requires a lot of attention whenever I can give it. I go home for lunch.

I drive a small car with great gas mileage. 35+ It costs me about $60 or so a month for gas.

In the 90s I used to drive an hour and 20 minutes to work at a dead end job out of town. I'm glad I have a dead end job IN town now. Much better.
