Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket

IT seems to have disappeared. A problem with the domain name? Or, hackers, maybe?

I just clicked on your link and it's there.

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Too weird, Johnny.

I click on it and go here:

Reliable Free & Professional Web Hosting, Free Domain names registration - ATSPACE.COM

**It looks like a re-direct of some sort because "www.photobucket.com" pops up momentarily in my URL address window...but then switches over to the other place.

It's working now.

Wonder why?

Hmmm. The plot thickens. I just got re-directed to a different site. This time it's:

AWARDSPACE.COM - Free Web Hosting, Domain Hosting, Professional Web Hosting, Domain registration, Affordable, Reseller Program, PHP, MySQL, Ecommerce

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

I'm kinda dumb about these things...but it seems odd that noone else is getting redirected to these other sites when they click on the photobucket link...just me.

It's obviously a conspiracy. Not that I'm paranoid...

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Run like some spyware programs like AD-Aware and/or hijackthis... Or, check your "hosts" file in:

On Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

make sure that file doesn't have some redirect of the IP for photobucket.

if it's random then it's probably just spyware stuff, AdAware and HiJackThis may be able to spot it...

Did you try the backdoor?

Are your printers still AWOL?

That doesn't work either. I get a message that Firefox cannot find the server at photobucket.com.

Printers are still AWOL...but that's on my home PC. This problem is presenting itself at work.

I have run Spybot...and I'm still getting redirected away from the site. It seems like I get directed to random sites. The most recent to which I've been sent is this:

Reseller Hosting | ResellerCluster

I guess I'll give an AdAware scan a try...

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

I noticed "Curly" was missing from my sig a few days ago, so I deleted the rest until I came up with a new one. The Photobucket issue would explain the disappearance.

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Try this:

Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket

If you aren't finding anything via spyware stuff, it might not even be a problem on your end, it might be a DNS thing which has to translate the name (photobucket.com) to an IP address (209.17.66.11), sometimes websites change or get hacked and it takes time to propagate to all the DNS servers out there... It might go away for you after a short bit. Because we all use different DNS servers, it would explain why it works for some (me included) and doesn't work for others...

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Yup. AdAware didn't work either. I'm thinking Jay is likely right. It sure seems strange, though, that no one else is having issues (unless Dave's image problem is also related).

Your link Jay DOES take me to some blog page...but it looks all funky because the images aren't loading. And, any link I click-on takes me to one of those various re-directs I posted above.

Curly is back!

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

I think checking your hosts file is the best bet. The file is often not checked read only, and the spyware people add stuff to it you won't want like redirecting from a major site to a site of their choosing.

works fine for me, I'm guessing you got a virus.

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Well...hallelujah!

This statement is finally posted on the main website to which I get re-directed (see Post #3):

Quote:
IMPORTANT! Photobucket.com problem read here:
Last night Photobucket.com DNS at register.com was hacked by malicious people that are trying to compromise our business!
We are in no way affiliated with such bad deeds and cooperate with photobucket in capturing these individuals.
They have pointed the domain photobucket.com to an account hosted on our systems!
We have blocked that and photobucked techs have restored the domain pointing to its original location!
ALL account information and pictures on photobucket.com are OK, please have patience!
Unfortunately the complete DNS replication usually takes 24-48 hours and during this time caches DNS records might still point to us!
The normal operation of Photobucket is restored and as soon as the replication is complete there should be no further such issues!
We would like to emphasize that we are in now way responsible for what happens with photobucket and all users bumping across our systems!
We are a legitimate web hosting company operating since 2003 and in no way tolerate such hacking attempts!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us at abuse@zettahost.com!
Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Hey, I mentioned the hosts file first...

See, not your problem, I'm sure others were probably having problem, unless the only person using Photobucket is Mike Frezon which I would think Photobucket would probably go belly up very shortly.

Actually, while trying to find an NSLOOKUP site (to get the IP address from the name), I think I ran into your problem, one of the DNS servers translated photobucket.com to an IP address that came up with atspace.com. I didn't thin much of it til I saw your reply where you mentioned one of your redirects was atspace.com.

I went and found another free NSLOOKUP tool and it gave me the correct IP address. But somehow I didn't make the connection, sorry!

I mentioned Hijackthis because it is not really as user-friendly as any of the spyware programs like adaware, etc. etc. but it will detect registry hacks that can redirect you to a third party, unintended website. Just like what a hack can do to your "hosts" file that I and Greg mentioned. there are actually some anti-spam programs out there that will modify your "hosts" file to put known spam and advertising sites redirected to localhost or 127.0.0.1 which is your loopback. But, viruss and spyware can get it too (though usually not from just browsing) so that is something to check as mentioned.

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

So, Jay, if I understand what you're telling me...all I have to do is wait this out, right?

I could access Photobucket from my home computer last night...but am still getting re-directed here at work. The notice I posted-up says it takes 24 to 48 hours sometimes to clear the DNS cache.

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Yes... it would be fruitless to pester your IT to change the DNS server, since the DNS server is not under your company's control. They could change to a fixed DNS server but if your IT is like my IT, then it's probably faster to ignore it anyway.

if it's not too cumbersome and it doesn't alway work, you can try replacing the photobucket.com with the actual IP address.

209.17.66.11

to look something like

http://209.17.66.11/images/foobar.gif

however, depending on how complex the destination is, it wont always work or might work horribly. In that way, you are getting an actual IP address and not needing the DNS server to translate the words into the number.

Like if drobbin's wanted to fix curly, which is one picture in his .sig, it wouldn't be too bad to simply replace the name with 209.17.66.11/ however, most websites get stuff from a lot of different sources and it wouldn't be feasible or possible to replace them all when they are loaded.

Re: Can anyone help me find Photobucket?

Curly is coming and going these past few days. He was missing again last night, but currently he is back again. I think photobucket is still having issues.

But that's how it worked in "reel" life, Curly disappeared and Shemp showed up!

Thanks everybody for all your help!

For the record, I'm still getting re-directed at this hour.
