Stan Winston R.I.P. - Page 2

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

Very nice tribute by a friend. Thanks to Big Jim for sharing his thoughts.

Not much more to add beyond the impact he had on the industry. A pioneer in a very challenging field, and cutting edge even in 2008.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

Leave it to Jim Cameron to provide a genuine laugh at the great times he and Stan had enjoyed. Wonderful words.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

One of my earliest memories is having the crap scared out of me by a TV movie called Gargoyles. I didn't find out until much later, probably around the time of Terminator 2, that it was Stan Winston who was largely responsible for my childhood fears.

Thanks for a good scare Mr. Winston, and many great memories at the movies.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

Very sad news.

He was a modern Ray Harryhausen and I thought he had 20 years left before he was going to retire.
Regardless of the movie, if Stan was working on it, it had great stuff by him. I've always held Mr. Winston in extremely high regard for his quality of work.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

No Way! This sucks! What is happening this year? I mean, besides Hollywood it seems a great many people in my life as a whole are passing. Stan Winston was nothing short of a genius/wizard of effects. His loss will be and has been felt. Goodbye Stan and Thank You.

Thank you for all your of innovations in order to advance special makeup and visual FX for the industry.

Rest in peace, Mr. Winston.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

I just read it, and I can't believe it yet. He will always be known for his immense diversity. Not a lot can say they brought Terminators, Predators, dinosaurs, penguins and whatnot (it truly is a long list) to life. Whether it was through make-up, or animatronics, Stan Winston brought characters to life, and he was the first one to say it. And according to the many interviews (and the wonderful letter by Mr. Cameron above) he was very liked, gentle, funny and very much respected in the business as well.
One of the pioneers has been gone, 62 years is way too young.

Yea hearing Stan Winston was working on a project always lead to optimism and made you look foward to what he would conjure up.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

I first learned Stan Winston's name reading Starlog as a kid. One of the last great masters in his field. Very sad that he only made it to 62. But he leaves behind an incredible imaginative legacy.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

Stan Winston's passing genuinely saddens me. Not only was he a brilliant artist, but also a genuinely decent man. I remember listening to the Aliens commentary tract and learning that the veteran British crew for the film showed the young James Cameron nothing but distain. Cameron remembered however that Stan Winston always gave him respect and treated him as 'the boss', setting an example for the British crew.

I was also impressed how Stan Winston never let the technology pass him by. He was the modern master of stop-motion animation and planned to use that technology in Jurassic Park. But when computer animation arrived and was proven superior, Winston was wise to see the future and become a part of it.

I think you're mistaken him with someone else. Phil Tippett (who did the AT-ATs and ED-209, among other things) is the one you're talking about. He indeed moved into computer animation when stop-motion thanks to Jurassic Park, would become 'extinct'. Stan Winston had a mostly practical approach, i.e. that most things he did were done live on set.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

From Variety's Obituary -

Quote:
Steven Spielberg, who worked with Winston on several films, said in a statement: "Stan was a fearless and courageous artist/inventor, and for many projects, I rode his cutting edge from teddy bears to aliens to dinosaurs. My world would not have been the same without Stan. What I will miss most is his easy laugh every time he said to me, 'Nothing is impossible.' "

Gov. Schwarzenegger said: "The entertainment industry has lost a genius, and I lost one of my best friends with the death Sunday night of Stan Winston. Stan's work and four Oscars speak for themselves and will live on forever. What will live forever in my heart is the way that Stan loved everyone and treated each of his friends like they were family."

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

very sad. He did the type of effects work that sometimes made you believe you weren't actually watching a special effect.

Re: Stan Winston R.I.P.

No Way! I just watched him in the making of documentary on The Thing.....that is a damn shame! A genius, generous and wonderful talent and seemingly a wonderful human being.

R.I.P. Mr. Winston, you will be remembered for as long as films are watched....a long time indeed.

I wanted to add, everyone has commented on a work of his that introduced them to the man, although I had seen much of his work prior to knowing his name (Gargoyles , The Wiz ) the film that made me look for his name after it was over was Heartbeeps (1981).........yeah, I know..not the best film out there but I remember being very impressed with the makeup and as a result the film has stayed with me to this day because of Stan's work.
