Are you kidding? The Ang Lee film was worse than the new one! At least the Hulk says a few words in the recent film.

I love the 1931 JEKYLL AND HYDE, but why should I watch this when the character of the Incredible Hulk as portrayed for decades in the comic books was indeed articulate, and spoke? I'm not asking for anything more than a proper rendering of this character, as he was intended.

What 40 years? Banner becomes the Hulk, the Hulk retains some articulation and is able to speak and communicate. It doesn't require a history.

Neither of the Hulk movies are dynamite movie, and both have their good points. I liked them both. Thing with Hulk is, he's such a one note character really. he gets pissed off and rampages. I think he's better suited for a team movie like this.

That's a misconception, which was my original point. There are other avenues in which to take this character. It was done in his own comic with many different stories (and personas) for well over 40 years now, but for some reason all the filmmakers seem to think about is the "rampaging Hulk" aspect you mention.

There's definitely other (more interesting) ways to take the Hulk but after Ang Lee's movie, they're never going to make a movie that's anything other than a "HULK SMASH!!!" actioner.

I'm still not sure why people keep referencing Ang Lee's film as any kind of example of a "nuanced Hulk" because it was even worse and less faithful to the character than the new movie, with the Hulk communicating far less.

Back to The Avengers -- I wonder why it takes so long in between films these days? The rumored release date for the movie is said to be 2011???

I believe this is a situation similar to that of the old Adam West Batman show, in which a tv version of the character is so much more dominant in the general public's mind compared to the original comics version that it puts a lot of pressure on the filmmakers to stick more closely to the tv show. Even the director of this new Hulk film admitted he was far more a fan of the Incredible Hulk show than the comics. I think it'll be a while before we get a consistently talking Hulk in the movies.

I also wouldn't mind seeing the filmmakers get a bit more flexible about the Hulk's characterization. One of the things I remember liking about the very early Hulk comics was the way he would change personalities in almost every issue before they finally settled on the Childlike Hulk as the primary personality.

My "hope" is that the Avengers movie has Captain America, Iron man, and Thor come together under the guidance of Nick Fury, General Ross and SHIELD to hunt down and stop the Hulk but halfway through the movie we find out the Hulk (Banner has some control when he changes now) is not the menace he is percieved to be by General Ross and instead works with SHIELD and the Avengers to take down an even bigger threat/villain.

That way we get to see 'Hulk Smash' the good guys and then team up with them to take down the true bad guy and at the end of the movie become the final member of the Avengers

The head of Marvel proceeds to swim in his money bin in glee

Marvel has a new animated Avengers coming this fall. (The 3rd one).

Called "Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow". The preview about made me sick.

Set in the future after most of the original Avengers are killed, so an aged Tony Stark and Bruce Banner recruit the children of Hawkeye, Thor, Captain America & others. The characters look like those doe-eyed children on Saturday morning cartoons.

I know the movies can't keep every detail of the comics, but why do they insist on changing 40 + years of storylines? (Spiderman's uncle killed by Sandman? Wolverine kills Jean Gray? etc)

In the promo, an executive says:

"The big thing we're trying to achieve here is to come up with something that helps broaden the audience".....

Let me get this straight....

They think that in order "to broaden the audience" they need to have 4 different variations of the Avengers (the classic Avengers storyline which everyone loves; the Ultimates; the upcoming live-action movie version and now a 4th version of Avenger-kiddies).

Why in the world would someone unfamiliar with the Avengers need to keep up with 4 different versions? How does this broaden their audience? Why not create new storylines using the characters that we all want to see so that new "audiences" will be able to understand what the hell is going on?

Marvel's just continuing to plumb the depths of their alternate universes. This sounds like it's based on Tom Defalco's A-Next, which is set in the future most famous for Spider-Girl. It's a lot older than the Ultimates, not that that invalidates your argument that Marvel ought to just be focusing on one set of Avengers to build brand cohesion.
