Kill Bill Coming This September
Posted June 13, 2008 05:43 PM by Josh

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed via their retailer site that they will be bring 'Kill Bill Part 1' and 'Kill Bill Part 2' to Blu-ray on September 9th. Its way too early to talk about specs or special features - we'll have to wait for the press release for that - but the fact that these highly anticipated films are finally coming to Blu-ray should make many fans smile.

That's pretty cool. I hope Jackie Brown and Grindhouse follow soon.

Cue all the posts saying "What about The Whole Bloody Affair? No sale!"

What about The Whole Bloody Affair? No sale!

Nah..! I've held out too long for TWBA. I finally pick these up on Blu-ray and be happy.

Any hope that this will be the uncensored / colour version of Kill Bill?

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

Julian I wouldn't count on it. The color sequence is one of the main distinctions between the cut that Disney retains and the cut Weinstein owns. I've lost interest the longer cut, they've been sitting on it too long.

KB 1&2 are must haves for me, hopefully Disney will followup in the not to distant future with Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Sin City.

With these and L.A. Confidential, September is shaping up to be a great catalog release month so far.

Different companies. Buena Vista owns the theatrical/US films w/B&W sequences, Weinstein owns TWBA/Director's/Japanese films. Thankfully, Weinstein's home video arm Genius Products already has a BD or two planned ("Lonesome Dove" is one), and some reliable sources have posted that Weinstein should be releasing not only BD versions of some of their HD DVDs, but also some new stuff like "1408".

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

As much as i love Kill Bill 1, i hated the second. It could have been 1 very good movie, with some cutting. IMO of course. Having said that, i will get part 1 on Blu!

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

Can't wait. I held out on buying the DVDs, waiting for The Whole Bloody Affair. Don't think I'll bother waiting this time w/ the BD... unless there's very solid info that's coming soon afterward.

I'll probably just wait for 'The Whole Bloody Affair'. I'm happy enough with the DVDs for now.

^ Third but its nice that this is coming out. Maybe the Weinsteins and Tarantino will get off their asses now and finally release the damn thing.

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

I'm with RickER, in that I adore the first one, but found the second one seriously wanting (that last 45 minutes just deflates it utterly. A monstrous let-down after such a superb buildup). That said, I still think part 2 is worth owning for the good stuff in it, which is very good.

But...no Japanese full-color 'House of Blue Leaves' chapter in the Vol. 1 BD, no sale. I've got the Japanese import standard-def DVD, and I'll gladly stick with that if need be. I found the switch to black & white in the U.S. cut distracting. And what can I say...I like bloody movies.

What is wrong w/ the switch to B&W? Was that not Tarantino's intention? Seems like an odd choice, if he didn't actually want that. I'd think the studio would rather colorize it than the other way around though I suppose they might've been averse to the amount of blood (in color) in this instance -- I don't really remember that scene all that well now. I honestly don't know the story behind that myself.

They switched that scene to black and white so they could get an R rating.

Absolute must buys for me. They've been showing the boxes at CES since about 2005 or so.

What Travis said. Like the draining of color from the finale of Taxi Driver, it was a concession to the U.S. ratings board.

The Japanese cut remains gloriously crimson through the whole scene, and once you've seen it that way, you won't want to go back. Presumably the "Whole Bloody Affair" will have the full-color version, so I guess I'll be waiting for that.

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

Full specs:
DVD Times - Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2 (US BD) in September

"The films are presented in 1080P 2.40:1 Widescreen with English 5.1 PCM audio (48kHz/24-bit), English and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and English SDH and Spanish subtitles. Extras are detailed below:

Kill Bill Volume 1
The Making of KILL BILL Volume 1
THE “5, 6, 7, 8’S” Musical Performances
Tarantino Trailers: “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Jackie Brown,” “Kill Bill: Volume 1” bootleg trailer, Kill Bill” Volume 2 teaser.

Kill Bill Volume 2
The Making of KILL BILL Volume 2
Damoe Deleted Scene
Chingon Musical Performance"

I assume, that "Vol.1" will be the "US R-rated Theatrical"-version (a shorter animated sequence and the 2nd part of the ""The House Of Leaves fight" is in black and white rather than colour - some screenshots: Schnittbericht :: Kill Bill: Vol. 1 :: Schnittberichte.com (Mehr als 4300 weitere Zensurberichte zu Filmen, Spielen, Comics ...) ) and with "Vol.2", again the Asian-releases had extra 45 sec scene at the Mexican brothel (some screenshots: Schnittbericht :: Kill Bill: Vol. 2 :: Schnittberichte.com (Mehr als 4300 weitere Zensurberichte zu Filmen, Spielen, Comics ...) ). Perhaps I´m wrong, but I doubt it...

After seeing "The House Of Leaves fight" in color (I have the DVD) etc, it´s hard to go back to the B&W version, even in 1080p... e.g. Japanese and Korean BD-releases just might have the "longer versions"..

I believe this is the real reason. So we can´t really compare "Kill Bill" to "JFK" or "Nixon". While I don´t really consider the "B&W version" "cut" as such, I still prefer the "longer/color version".. E.g. Korean BD-titles cost roughly the same as the US ones (give or take, I guess), so perhaps they´ll release the "color"-version (Japanese DVDs/BDs are usually quite expensive).

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

Still don't get why they've rated it as NC-17, though--these releases are the same R rated cuts; amazon constantly does this: they had Natural Born Killers listed as Unrated when in Pre-order--and still do--while the release was clearly announced to be the R rated cut.

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

Funny the way life works. I actually think it works better in B&W. I in no way shape or form have an aversion to blood but it looks too comical in color. Looks like a cool manga in B&W. Just my opinion.

I know it was only chosen to be B&W to get the R rating but aren't so many classics filled with good accidents. Jaws was terrific in that the shots of the shark were kept to a minimu. GENIUS, great idea, adds so much to tension, drama, edge of your seat suspense. The real reason was ole Bruce the shark wasn't working well and they had to make due.

However I agree both versions should be out there so we can choose which to watch.

I agree with you. I like the switch to black and white but I don't like that footage has been cut. That being said I haven't seen the uncut Volume 1 so I can't say if I would feel the same way after seeing it but I suspect I would. In a perfect world the blu-ray would allow you to select between a black and white or colour uncut House of Blue Leaves scene.

Re: Kill Bill Vol One and Two (Bluray 9/9/08)

I like the saga as two movies, although still interested to see TWBA.

The first movie has a rhythm and mood very much of its own, quite different than vol. 2 - which is good, but different.

As one film, I'm a little concerned this may actually work against the whole experience, becoming a little pretentious in the process.
