Our protests have a least registered to the point where it looks like CBS/Paramount will not be releasing another Fugitive volume this year. I hope this doesn't mean that they have abandoned the series though. The Fugitive is so good, it shouldn't be allowed to die on DVD.

CBS/Paramount should just hire an expert and eliminate the Capitol music cues while keeping the rest of the original score entact. Then they should release the second season of the Fugitive as a complete set, by-passing the split into volumes this time. Only through something like this can they earn back the respect of the fans and restore a tarnished reputation. I hope someone over there is beginning to realize this.

Well said! They brag about putting their programs "on a pedestal". Now it's time for them to back up their words with action.

I suspect we won't see Season 3 or Season 4 unless/until gold hits $3,000 an ounce.


You'd think, however, they'd at least kick out S2 V2 before they slammed the door on Dr. Kimball.

You know... could CBS/P be intentionally sabotaging their product so they only have the produce half a season, then say sales were poor and kill it?

At this point, I wouldn't put anything past these guys.

What exactly would be the point of that? No company releases something saying "I hope this doesn't sell so we don't have to keep making money from it."

No one ever accused TPTB of logic. But think about it, how many shows got abandoned thanks to sub-standard releases? I sometimes wonder if they deliberately half-ass some releases just to shut us up and bury the title.

Maybe CBS assumed they could just write off a show like Fugitive or My Three Sons anyway since shows like CSI and more recent fare sell better anyway, I dunno.

Basically, you're saying that instead of spending nothing and ignoring fans of a series, the studios spends money in the hopes that it fails so they lose the money they invested in releasing the DVDs?

EDIT: I'm not trying to belabor this or make it an issue but I just can't see any studio doing what I described above.

If CBS spent money to re-score the entire Season 2, I find it puzzling (whether they want it to fail or not) that they don't release the second half of S2.

Maybe they're waiting for the smoke to clear, thinking that memories are short and a Q2 or Q3 2009 release will make it through the general public.

You'd think it would be easy to get inside the head of a CBS/Paramount executive...there's a lots of room!

*sigh* All I ever wanted was good quality studio releases of this excellent vintage series.

I agree with everyone here that the complete replacing of the underscore for every episode in the Season 2 Volume 1 release is an absolute abomination and resulted in pretty much ripping out the "soul" of the series. CBS/Par would have been much better off to have just shuttered the release of the series following season 1 than to resort to this mutilation. And to add insult to injury, its obvious that a great deal of money was spent in restoring the video to a near pristine state. To pair the restored video with the replaced music was an unqualified slap in the face to all fans of this series.

However, I will *never* resort to "alternate avenues" to acquire this or any other series. Doing so will certainly not encourage the studios to spend time and money restoring and releasing vintage series of any type.

IMO. the proper course to take here is to continue to complain to CBS/Paramount about this release (and the "My Three Sons" release) and make them understand why these releases did not satisfy the fans in spite of the money that was spent.

CBS was just lazy and careless with music replacement on THE FUGITIVE.

Ironically, the first season of "The Donna Reed Show" just released by Arts Alliance is loaded with Capitol production music. Even the show's theme is right out of the Capitol production music library. While I haven't watched the entire set it appears the original music is intact (the only thing missing is the Screen Gems logo from the end of each episode).

I had bought the two season one releases and have not bought the season two release for the obvious reason.

I have managed to get hold of season two episode one with the restored original soundtrack.

I haven't watched all of it yet but from what I have seen; you have done an excellent job.

Were the studio to release the DVDs with the original soundtrack then I would buy it but for now I am quite happy with the F.A.R.T. work.

I know we're treading on controversial subject here at HTF but I would like to track down a copy of the complete S2 with the restored image and original audio synch that some of you claim to have come across. I would just like to know if the sets are professionally packaged with artwork and printed discs like the slop CBS has thrown us and if so, could someone please shoot me a p.m. to point me int he right direction.

If CBS/Paramount decide to do the right thing and revisit this mess or offer us the remainder of the series with the original soundtrack intact then I will continue to show support with purchases but until then...

i'm sorry but i'm new here and this my first post so you'll have to pardon me, but i've just read this thread from beginning to end and i can't believe how silly people are. i mean come on we are talking about a tv show here people! to continually criticize a great studio like cbs/paramount who do the best that they can with what they have is just so outrageous. instead of always criticizing the studios and being so petty maybe we should thank them for putting out such great old shows in the first place. who cares what's been changed as long as we get to see the show again? i don't see any tv stations showing these old shows anymore and i don't see all the angry posters in this forum offering to spend any of their own money to license, manufacture and release old tv shows on dvd. i can't imagine the studios make very much money on any of this stuff so i think we should support them in all their efforts.

i personally think that mr. epstein has created a wonderful site with htf and we should not put him in an awkward position with any of the dvd makers. he works tirelessly not for himself but to make this site as good as it is and he knows the studios personally so when he posts that he has information about why the studios have to change things on dvds, we should trust that he knows all the details and not doubt him or the studios. plus the great people at htf are always very busy planning interesting and informative 'meets' in hollywood with real studio representatives and celebrities. a lot of valuable information comes out of those meetings! why would we want to jeoparadize his good standing with the studios by being so hateful toward them as some folks in this thread have been? i imagine htf is a labor of love for everyone who works there and i think they deserve our support not our criticism.

thank you mr. epstein and all your great colleagues at htf. and thank you to cbs/paramount for putting out so many of my favorite shows on dvd!

^ Walker, I agree that some people have gone way overboard in their criticism but Paramount did replace the score on a show and they did it without telling anyone. It's not a problem in the life and death sense and people shouldn't lose sleep over it and everyone should keep perspective on the situation because it is only a DVD. However, replacing a score is a big problem when talking about DVDs and no one wants to see continue.

I seriously doubt that Mr. Epstein went to the trouble of creating this site so that people could limit their comments to blindly thanking CBS Paramount and other studios regardless of the quality of their work. THAT would be silly! You may think that critically discussing classic tv shows like "The Fugitive" is silly. I don't and I'm grateful for all who feel the same.

well i don't know mr. epstein and i can't speak for him or his staff but it seems to me that htf must sometimes be good will ambassadors to the studios in order to get us the most information that they can. i'm also sure that they are dependent on the studio for such necessities as screener copies of dvds and sample equipment in order to provide us with educated reviews. if i were them i would not tolerate the excessive studio bashing that has gone on in this thread. i think it goes beyond just having an objective point-of-view when you are in charge of something as ambitious in scope as htf. mr. epstein was right to shut this thread down when everyone started to get out of control and was insulting people at the studios and clamoring that the studios don't have our best interests at heart. to anger the studios who respect mr. epstein so much and what he's trying to do at htf seems to me to be counter-productive. i think that alternative opinions are all well and good, but not when they threaten the healthy and honest philosophy of a site like htf which knows that business is business and there should always be room for compromise.

obviously we can agree to disagree. i like cbs/paramount and think that they had to make a choice. some folks want to see it as being unethical or having no integrity, but those people must not have much business experience. i'll take my tv on dvd anyway i can get it as long as i know that the studio did the best job they could under the circumstances.

No-one fought as hard to keep this thread open (back in the earliest days of it) as I did - and I truly hate to see it closed because so many people seem to only want to discuss bootlegs.

That line of discussion is forbidden here, and I sincerely hope that everyone will just abide by those rules.
