Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found? - Page 3

Re: complete Magnificent Ambersons

I've become accustomed to Russell's hyperbole. I do find it ironic he has the avatar which seems to be indicating he feels others are often telling him not to express himself, while he is criticizing others for expressing themselves. Responses like those recently in this thread strike me as saying one person can ask whatever they choose and say whatever they want, but nobody else can. Bottom line, stirring up this issue, again, will raise some criticism that a simple pre-emptive search would have most likely avoided.

I'm not allowed to talk about the reasons for my avatar, let's just say they are the opposite.

And, not to speak for the thread originator, maybe he enjoys the people here and likes to hear discussion?

There's a big snoot factor around here, and it turns some of us off who think that watching and discussing movies should be fun. some people who work in the industry have left the site over it. I'm not losing sleep over any of this, I'm pretty used to members grabbing their pitchforks and going after people over the littlest things.

Thanks for pointing this out, because I really couldn't understand it.

Okay, this is my last on this before I get banned again for having a different opinion. You guys have switched, from wanting the thread closed due to someone (who is seemingly innocent) posting a question about something he didn't know and you all taking it as a prank plotted and planned as a personal attack, to just being able to offer a criticism (big difference from wantign a thread shut down). So what's it going to be?

Also, how many threads have been started with titles like "does anyone know if *insert movie title* has been released?" Are the hounds sent on those guys too? Wouldn't a simple internet search tell them that? Doing a google on this topic doesn't immeadiatly bring up confirmation or denial of the Brazil thing, just that it's rumored and not yet found. I'd think a place like the HTF would be a good place to ask about it since many industry professionals come around here, as is evedent in this thread. And not all of us are experts on the history of every film released.

Only one poster asked for the thread to be shut down, so please don't lump all of us in with him.

I dunno, I agree with Russell's position on this. The OP asked a harmless question to the community...looking for guidance. That's how I read it. If you want to assume more...you are reading between-the-lines with an agenda or bias.

And while only one poster asked for the thread to be closed, it was seconded and supported by a couple of others.

I learned quite a lot about The Magnificent Ambersons in this thread, too. I don't see any big deal with the thread and would love to see the discussion about the film itself continued. I'm not seeing any kind of prank or conspiracy in play by the OP.

Some of you guys need to relax just a bit. If you don't like what's being discussed in this thread then stop reading it. There is simply no reason why this thread should be close at this time.

I'm with Mike, Russell and others here who find nothing wrong with the thread starter asking his question. I'd never even heard of this film until I perused this thread and from what I've read it has a fascinating history. It's now on my to watch list.

That's exactly what this forum is about to discuss home theater and film.

Re: Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found?

I think the thread title annoyed more people than the thread itself. I think the title just got people's hopes up too much. There's a lot of people who are very passionate about that film, and they feel that they've been missing out on something really good, because of that long-ago editing snafu.

Re: Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found?

In the end, all I was saying is that this is a particular title that is likely to stir up some emotions, and that it seemed like at least one person was saying it is OK for some people to post their thoughts, but not OK for others to do the same.

Re: Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found?

I participated in the thread and had no problem with the original poster's question. I daresay my pulse quickened at the thought of the rest of The Magnificent Ambersons being found, but was not surprised that it turned out to be a rumor/hoax. I do not think the original poster was obligated to come back and check in either. I am a huge Welles fan, and am glad that the discussion here may have interested some in another of Welles' films. I cannot say how tired I am of hearing th oft-repeated line "what did Orson Welles ever do that was great besides Citizen Kane?". At least, this thread performed a service in that it basically quashed an internet rumor.

Re: Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found?

I'm the guilty party, the original poster - and like the rest of you, I doubted that the rumor I'd heard was true, but you never know do you? And who better to ask than the people on this forum? I didn't think that a complete print of Dreyer's silent film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" would ever surface. But lo and behold, a high quality print was discovered in a Scandinavian institution. Then there's the two-color Technicolor film "Mystery of the Wax Museum" with Fay Wray. It was thought lost forever, but they found that one too. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that there is a complete Ambersons stashed away in a dark corner somewhere on this planet. That's why I asked the question.

Each year lost films are turning up so there's always hope.

John, you're not guilty of anything but stepping on the overly-delicate toes of a lot of people on this board. That is neither a felony in the US or Canada, last time I checked. I may have unintentionally added fuel to the fire by posting the link to the Amberson's page on the TCM website where this strange hoax seems to have started. I'll say it again but Warner could settle this nonsense by simply issuing a press release announcing Amberson's DVD release date, period!

I guess that the same vault that holds the uncut Magnificent Ambersons also holds the 9 hour version of Greed.

Re: Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found?

Someone started a rumor on another message board a few months back about the finding of Murnau's 4 Devils. Now that was cruel.

Re: Is it possible that a complete Magnificent Ambersons has been found?

I just found 67 prints of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT in Jimmy Hoffa's basement.
