Burbank, Calif., June 9, 2008 – The Picture of Dorian Gray never gets old. On October 7, just in time for Halloween, Warner Home Video will introduce one of their most requested titles on DVD – MGM’s gripping 1945 adaptation of Oscar Wilde's Victorian horror novel about a man who stays eternally young while his famous portrait ages through the years. The film, starring George Sanders, Angela Lansbury and Donna Reed, was nominated for three Academy Awards,®-winning one for Best Cinematography and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Miss Lansbury. The Picture of Dorian Gray ($19.97 SRP) has been remastered especially for this release and boasts new bonus features, including cast commentaries, a vintage short plus a special cartoon.

It's always great when an old film like this is released. All the same, I must be honest and say that, personally, I was hoping there would be a Warner "horror set" for Halloween. So I'm wondering - does the fact that this title is being released by itself negate that likelihood? Or is there still a chance of getting Boris Karloff's THE WALKING DEAD and FRANKENSTEIN 1970 as well as Peter Lorre's BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS?

It's coming. A film like this just couldn't fit in with FRANKENSTEIN 1970.

(although Fox are releasing a higher profile title with two B movies)

Wow, you made my day! Even though I have the laser disc of this title, I am still really excited to see this come out on DVD finally, and with Angela Lansbury participating in the commentary track!

The press release does not mention it, but both of the shorts are Oscar winners.

I think "Beast with Five Fingers" is coming out too in October.

Great news. I saw this for the first time (including color inserts) on TCM within the past six months or so. I was planning on recording it next time it aired to make my own DVD-R copy. Now I won't have to.

It's not listed on Amazon for pre-order.

I also taped this off TCM (along with the trailer), but I will buy the DVD too, because it will be of better quality.

I hope the trailer included on the DVD is the same one that's shown on TCM, as it contains some deleted footage from the film.

EDIT: It's listed for pre-order now.

I've never seen the film, and I look forward to finally seeing it, but I understand this notion somewhat.

However, it is a 1945 (mostly) black and white film. It's not too surprising, from an economic standpoint, to see a HD version passed over. After all, Warner has had the disc image for the Blu-ray of Casablanca - a far more known and popular classic title - done for months (according to The Digital Bits and other reliable websites) and yet we haven't seen the release due to marketing concerns.

That being said, Warner has explicitly stated that a lack of a day-and-date release of BD with a new DVD means it won't be on the BD schedule anytime soon, so you can safely buy the DVD without fear of a double-dip for probably 5-6 years.

It is about TIME! I can now retire my old M-G-M laser. My biggest concern was having the color inserts. Glad that they are there. Also it would have been sad to have had Angela Lansbury not do a commentary.

I remember there being one color shot of the painting in the old VHS...and also remember reading somewhere that there were originally more. So, there is more than one color shot this time 'round?

I must have misremembered; I only remember seeing one. So then, if the color inserts have been in all previous video versions of the film, why hasn't Mark Zimmer seen them, and why is it such a big deal about the inserts?
