As RAH noted in the Pan's Labyrinth thread, the use of a single master for both SD and hi-def may also play a role.

I would suggest a sticky thread regarding the issue with all of the addresses/contacts to each major studio where we can write letters to. I think the more snail mail letters EACH studio gets, the greater the likelyhood we can do something about this madness.

I have no objection to this being done and should someone take
the time to compile addresses into a post I will be more than happy
to make it a "sticky."

I would ask that the following conditions be met....

1. Please post a paragraph or two stating the purpose of the
letter writing campaign. Please emphasize the point that emails
are to be polite and professional.

2. No phone numbers, please.

If someone posts such a thread please send me the URL and
I will make it a "sticky". My email address is below in my signature.

Sure, but I maintain that in terms of relative scale, pan-and-scanning and DNR'ing are two totally different animals and the former is a great deal more horrific than the latter. I endorse neither, and agree studios should be taken to task for the practice of DNR, but I can't grasp viewers who get as wound up over DNR'ing as pan-and-scanning. I'll never buy pan-and-scan, but if a title has been over-DNRed, well, that's a pisser, but I'll still pick it up, if it's a title I want...

At this point I won't buy a title that has so much DNR that people look like waxworks figures.

I was skeptical about Fox's older catalog titles until the recent Patton and Sand Pebbles. The Batman movie PQ got high marks on another website. I'm guessing that APES will look amazing when it is finally released on Blu Ray.

not sure what you mean, aren't those the two big titles that fox has messed
up with the dnr?

Not sure either, but the short story is 'Patton' and 'The Longest Day' have excessive DNR, but The Sand Pebbles is OK. I believe 'Battle of Britian' and 'A Bridge Too Far' are OK as well.

Same here. My THX DVD of Evil Dead 2 is far more detailed than the Blu-ray. Why buy something on Blu-ray when you can get more detail out of its standard DVD counterpart that was properly authored?

If film grain was part of the original intended image, don't take it out. Period. Every movie is meant to look a certain way. And I'm not sure I buy Lowry's claim that they can remove it and not remove detail. What, they interpolate the detail they remove? A lot of their stuff looks overly processed and digital.

You should only restore to what it was meant to look like originally. Anything else is revisionist.

That was actually Mr. Harris' claim, having worked with Lowry, I believe.
