True HD is quite capable of being heard on a 5.1 system. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of True HD soundtracks are only 5.1. There are very few 7.1 out there.

I love my receiver! I haven't up graded my speakers yet, but I am running some old ESS fronts, a Polk center, and some panasonic rears. Not ideal, but I'm getting there

PCM is not "touch better than regular DVD 5.1", PCM is equal to what you would get from True HD or any other lossless codec, because the PCM track is what they use to produce the True HD. Undecoded True HD = PCM.

I read that the audio is 5.1 dolby digital. Meaning, the hardware (onkyo) can only put out as good of a signal as its software (pirates) allows. In this case, you are going to want to set the receiver to the DD Master HD (it will therefore default to the next best thing that the DVD can offer, in this case DD 5.1) Check out on that blu-ray website some other movies that sound great in 7.1 and see if the specs on them in fact say 7.1. If they only say 5.1 like pirates, then I am stumped and you might just have to accept the DD 5.1. Let me know the results...

The best audio you can get from Blu-ray is PCM. You get PCM from a PCM track, or by decoding TrueHD/DTS-HD-MA. The number of channels depends on the film, not the codec, and both 5.1 and 7.1 will play on a 5.1 system
