the lack of the bonus disc is making this a pain. Time-Life wants to keep their version instead of letting it go to the retail sources.

Not to speak for anyone but I think he means that he's glad that he didn't buy the complete series set since the seasons will be available separately.

I don't see any guarantee that all 5 seasons of GET SMART will make it to retailer shelves. If season 1 doesn't do well (which i admit will not be the case), they may not move forward with future seasons at retail.

Perhaps he's also happy that he didn't spend the $200 for the complete series when he can get (presumably) each season now for $25 and theoretically spend only $125 on the series (assuming he wants all the seasons, and that they will all be released).

I was thrilled to get it for $160 18 months ago and have enjoyed all the extras so it was worth it for me.

I can't imagine having all seasons w/o the extras! I'm so glad I chose to dive in and buy "Get Smart" blindly. It's one of the greatest series ever and I wish I had got into it a long time ago! IMO, you would be doing a disservice to yourself not to buy the whole series set from Time-Life.

Maybe he's like me and doesn't have a credit card, Time Life's website only accepts payment by CC. I'm glad Amazon takes money orders, I can see myself overspending very easily if I had one. I have a certain amount of money put aside each month for DVDs and M.O.s help me to stay within that amount.

I'm interested in getting this series but it's been a long time since I've seen any episodes, so I'm not sure if I will still like it. I'd rather buy one season set to see if I like it a lot better than basically blind buying the whole series for $200. The news that there won't be any extras is disappointing but I still might buy season 1.

I think HBO Video is making the right move. They're probably thinking that most die-hard fans will have already purchased the Time-Life complete set, so now they are aiming to the "on the fence" consumers or casual fans who don't care about the special features, and just want the episodes. The MSRP is 24.98 but it will probably be found cheaper in stores or online, more like $20 bucks, so IF they release all 5 seasons at this price, it could be had for approx. $100 for the retail version complete series.

You (and Brian's post above) do make it sound tempting. I was just checking out the link for the Time-Life set. Goodness, those special features look amazing. I would love to see those clips from The Andy Williams Show and The Bill Dana Show. This set does look quite good!

I have the Get Smart TL release. It is wonderful and heartily recommended. If one googles for TL discount codes you should be able to save quite a bit of money. I don't recall exactly what I paid for it but it was in the neighborhood of 20% off w/no shipping. There aren't many shows that I'd drop that kind of dough on at one time, but GS is one of them.

For a casual fan of the show, the retail releases, which are priced to sell, will probably suffice.

You're absolutely right, Steve. If one is attentive you should be able to get the set for 160 shipped (approx $32 per season!).

In addition to the bonus discs, I believe I read somewhere that the commentaries may not be ported over to the general release.

Ron, be on the lookout for a Mastercard or Visa "Gift Card." These are cards that can be loaded up with money, then used like a credit card. Since they're treated like a credit card, but used like a gift card, this may be a good route for you to explore if you're worried about over-spending on a normal credit card, or find a place that won't accept money orders.

I had to do some real soul searching before I bought the set. Mainly because I hadn't seen all that much of the series. That, and I'm very picky about what 60s TV shows I do buy on DVD. I'm not all that much of a fan of 60s TV, but there are a few shows that were either just plain outstanding that I just have to have them (Bewitched for example) or that are real iconic shows of the 60s (Get Smart, Gilligan's Island, Star Trek) that they deserve to be in my TV on DVD collection. After I bought and watched the set I was very, very pleased that I had the set. Get Smart is a real gem and Time-Life did a fabulous job with the set. It was well worth every penny I spent on it. Hands down, it is one of the best (if not the very best) TV on DVD set I've ever owned.

That's great to read. Now just don't tell me that they've removed all of the original music from the series.

Seriously, I am very picky as well, but not of shows from the 1960s; rather, I am very selective when it comes to shows that succeeded that decade. I own very few shows from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. There are, of course, exceptions to this, such as Trek. I am a completist as far as those shows and films are concerned.

Thanks for this recommendation, though. It sounds like something I should purchase.

No, all of the music is there. At least as far as I know. The set doesn't have that usual blurb about music sustitutions that other sets carry. So, I assume all of the music is there.

All music is present AFAIK. The only edit I'm aware of, and it was supposedly unintentional and an error, was in the episode where the twins are born. A very brief shot of Max falling over a hospital cart was not included. From what was posted at Carl Birkmeyer's Yahoo Group nobody noticed this when the episode was transferred. This, in my opinion, is nothing to get upset over. We're talking about a few seconds of footage max (no pun intended).

I've seen those in the Grocery Store. The ones I've seen are only in the amount of $50 and the $5 usage fee scares me off. I try to stretch my spending money as far as I can, which is why I choose the free shipping option on Amazon and M.O.s only cost a buck. I'm on a tight budget as it is. Those cards don't seem to be worth using on larger orders, like the Get Smart set. After looking them up online, I think a Visa Re-loadable card would be a better option for me, since any amount can be put on it but the nearest place that sells them is 30 miles away. Thanks for the info,Gord, it's worth looking into more.

This may sound odd, but check out your local shopping mall - we have a number of them here that sell mall gift cards that are actually Visa pre-paid cards. It's the easiest thing for the stores in the mall to use since they're just ringing through a "credit card." The Time-Life Get Smart set is very, very nice, and worth owning.

Well, I'm one who feels a bit ripped off. After deciding that TL was not going to release this any time soon I did some soul searching and decided to get the set during a promotion where it was $150 shipped. I felt it was still a bit steep (I typically value a 30 minute show at $.75/episode tops) but reasoned it out thinking it would probably be offered for ~$35/season at retail without the phone booth box. If the bonus features had been included it probably would have gone for that price.

As far as the "bonus features" go, IMO they are not worth the additional expense. Given that I only sampled those on the 1st season set, found them to be typically boring, and have no interest in any of the others it is money wasted for me. I also found the introduction on every episode by Barbara Feldon annoying and started skipping them before the 1st season was over. The much touted phone booth box is a joke too.

Initially I had no interest in seasons 4 & 5 so those were a waste at first. After watching them I found them to not be as bad as I had remembered, but still nowhere as good as the first 3 seasons.

I'm the consumer the new releases are going for. If the episode introductions by Feldon are also gone I may have to unload my TL set to get the improved retail version. Hopefully they'll get rid of the bottom loading/dropping "slip-case" and stacking digi-pak design too.

I used dvd price search and found two online retailers that are selling this for under 20 bucks. In fact, one's pre-order price is a whopping $12.47!

One of the drawbacks of living in a Small town like I do is that there aren't any nearby Malls, the nearest one is about 40 miles away and I haven't been to it since around the time Independence Day debuted on VHS. I do most of my DVD buying on Amazon, they treat me very well. That said, I think I can swing this set within the next few months if I balance my DVD budget right.

The gift card is actually a great idea. I've been thinking this over and I figured out how to do it. I can either put aside some of my DVD money each month until I have enough cash to afford the set or I can put aside all of this months funds and use my saved up loose change to place my regular monthly Amazon order, via the Coinstar machines. Plus I can still buy the series a season at a time through gift cards from my local Grocery Store or or buy the whole series by purchasing one in a larger amount from Wal-Mart then next time I head into town to see a movie. I can get over my cheapness and paid the fees for these cards for this set. Thanks, Gord!
