Just a quick update:

It looks like Optimum's "Escape From New York" is all-regions. "They Live" has been moved to September 22, but no word on region coding.

Thanks.

Now I just need to find a place to order this from at a reasonable price given the US Dollar is currently worth-"less"

I just looked at the prices for 'Escape from New York' and 'The Fog' on Amazon UK, Base, Play, Tesco, and Zavvi. Amazon UK is the same price or cheaper than the rest, so I have placed an order with them temporarily. If I've missed a place, or anyone finds it cheaper than £11.05 plus shipping please share it with the group.

September line-up:
Quote:
Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK Blu-ray Disc release of several catalogue titles in September. Region coding information is TBC and exact dates and details are subject to change…

1st September 2008:

Night of the Living Dead - George A. Romero’s zombie classic is given a remastered release and includes a 90 minute documentary on the director.

Day of the Dead (2008) - This direct-to-video remake stars Mena Suvari, Ving Rhames and Nick Cannon. The Blu-ray will have none of the extras found on the DVD release (Interview sound-bites from cast and crew including Mena Suvari, Nick Cannon and the director Steve Minor, the original trailer and selected b-roll).

15th September 2008:

This Is England - Shane Meadows acclaimed rites of passage drama comes to Blu-ray with plenty of extras including:

* Commentary with director Shane Meadows, producer Mark Herbert and lead actor Thomas Turgoose
* Behind the Scenes
* Deleted scenes
* Guardian interview with Shane Meadows at BFI Southbank
* Interview with Shane Meadows (Jason Wood for Picturehouse cinemas)
* Interview with Mark Herbert
* Production Departments: Hair, Make-up and Costumes
* Crew interviews & Rehearsals
* Production Design
* Essays on Skinheads and The Falklands War
* Cast Biographies
* Theatrical Trailer

Rise of the Footsoldier - This gritty drama follows the inexorable rise of Carlton Leach from one of the most feared generals of the football terraces to becoming a member of a notorious gang of criminals who rampaged their way through London and Essex in the late eighties and early nineties.

Extras on the Blu-ray appear to match the DVD and include:

* Exclusive interview with Carlton Leach
* Commentary by Director (Julian Gilbey) and writer (Will Gilbey)
* Filming the Footsoldier: The making of Rise Of The Footsoldier [75 mins]
* Deleted & Extended Scenes
* Out Takes
* Auditions
* Production Stills
* Trailers

Basic Instinct - This erotic thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone arrives on Blu-ray alongside a new DVD release but retains none of the extras (the DVD will include the “Blonde Poison” featurette, commentary by Camille Paglia and the original trailer).

22nd September 2008:

They Live - “Rowdy” Roddy Piper stars in John Carpenter’s sci-fi thriller that arrives on Blu-ray alongside a new DVD release but, in a developing trend, retains none of the extras (the DVD will feature an 8-minute EPK making-of and director’s commentary).

Evil Dead II - Sam Raimi’s horror-comedy classic arrives on Blu-ray with no extras.
DVD Times - Optimum Blu-ray in September

Re: Upcoming "Optimum" BD-titles (UK) Cliffhanger, Carpenter, etc

From their September slate, I'm down for 'They Live', of course. I'd be curious to know how 'Night of the Living Dead' is, although I think that is supposed to get US release this year also. The same goes for 'Evil Dead II', as the current Starz BD release is the poster child for DVNR run a muck, however I've heard that the DVNR in that release is inherent in the master, so unless Optimum is using a different one there probably isn't much hope I'm afraid.

Edited to add:

One a semi-related note, does anyone know of a comparison between the Spanish Orphanage and the US BD releases. Wasn't the Spanish Orphange BD done by Optimum also?

Just a qick question to some of these new releases.

Why are the extras dropped ?

Re: Upcoming "Optimum" BD-titles (UK) Cliffhanger, Carpenter, etc

Any opinions on Total Recall and T2? Now that releases I'm interested in are beginning to dry up I'm starting to think more about imports.

How does Total Recall compare against the U.S. BD?

How does T2 compare against the French HD DVD (which I have)?

thanks in advance for any feedback.

Re: Upcoming "Optimum" BD-titles (UK) Cliffhanger, Carpenter, etc

Totall Recall- despite a slight edginess (there are some minor halos visible in a few shots), it's a substantial improvment over the domestic Lionsgate release. I don't think anyone who likes the film would regret getting the UK release.
T2- the french HDDVD has both cuts of the film, the UK only has the DC. They should be indistinguishable in sound and appearence. I'm just fine with the HD DVD so thankfully I think I've finally bought the last copy of this film I ever will (Hallelujiah!).

Re: Upcoming "Optimum" BD-titles (UK) Cliffhanger, Carpenter, etc

Well that helps make my decision for Total Recall. thanks.

The benefit of having English subtitles (a must in my household) on T2 might be enough for me to get it, even though I'm loosing the Theatrical cut. Then again if ever a film was guaranteed another release on BD it's this one so maybe I'll just hold off for the Uber set in the future.

And don't forget that Terminator: Salvation comes out in theaters in May so that T2 re-release may be coming in the next six months.

Good point. I'd forgotten about the new film. I'm smelling some marketing synergy tie-in for a new BD release of T2.

Re: Upcoming "Optimum" BD-titles (UK) Cliffhanger, Carpenter, etc

^And Van Ling (Cameron's DVD producer) started a thread in the Insiders section over the summer asking what people wanted to see on a Terminator and Terminator 2 Blu-ray. So I assume it's something they must be at least thinking about over at Lightstorm.
