THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

Classicflix.com has a post for a 9/9 release of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTORS EDITION. There are no specific details, but from the retail price ($26.99), I would suspect that it's a 2 discer. Hopefully, it would include some of the footage of Laughton directing the film (7 hours+?) that was unearthed a few years ago.

Hopefully, it will be in its original aspect ratio. This great film deserves no less. This is one film that would look great in HD, too bad a BRD is not coming too.

Fantastic. I'm hoping that this gorgeous, gorgeous film will be given the release it has long deserved.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

If they're smart, they'd interview Peter Graves and other surviving cast/crew members. I bet threr's a lot of great stories about the film, and personalities like Laughton, Mitchum, Winters, and Miss Lillian Gish.

AWESOME!!

Absolutely. This should definitely be matted to a widescreen ratio.

I may be opening a can of worms asking this, but... anybody know what the intended aspect ratio was?

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

I reckon that the intended ratio was 1.66:1.

Kiss Me Deadly
is now OOP, so I'd love to see a SE with a new 1.66:1 anamorphic transfer - or a Blu-Ray edition.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

The IMBD has it listed as a 1.66 ratio, but it was probably shot with an open matte.

AFI list the film at 1.85:1 ratio.

I would lean toward this one. An awful lot of dead space above and below.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

I saw a screening of the UCLA restoration a couple of months ago, and I'm pretty sure they showed it at 1.85:1 (it definitely wasn't 1.37:1).

Which makes sense because I think AFI was the one that received the film elements and Laughton footage from his widow, Elsa Lanchester. AFI then gave the elements to UCLA and they restored it.

That's Lanchester, Mr. Crawford!

Sorry, but I was multi-tasking and mixed up my family name with the late Ms. Lanchester. Anyhow, at least you got a chance to correct me.

The MGM/UA high definition channel ran "Night Of The Hunter" last month and it was widescreen.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

I'm thrilled about this and can't wait for details to be posted!

There's a film screening tonight in Montreal, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be sourced from a newly struck restored print.

I hope details and artwork follow shortly!

Just read this on ClassicFlix

Quote:
After announcing last week a September 9th release date for The Night of the Hunter (Collector's Edition), an industry source has now informed us that it been removed from the schedule. When asked for a ballpark release date, he could only say that it will happen, but could not say when.

All pre-orders have been cancelled.

that's a bummer

When it reappears on the release schedule, I hope a Blu-ray release is added too.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

That's a huge bummer!

Although if they're going to do it right, then I'm all for a delay. The potential is there for an amazing commentary (plenty of scholars love this film) as well as a documentary that made the rounds a few years ago, and additional behind the scenes footage.

If Sony decides to do this right, this DVD could be one of the best ever.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

Well, it's MGM/Fox not Sony, anymore.

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

Perhaps they realized that nobody cares about the 1990s remake and were actually expecting some useful features? Was it not previously announced on this forum by someone who attended a screening of the restored print in LA that documentaries and such had been produced?

I also find it shockingly frustrating that Fox would tack on an extra disc on the 90's remake of TNOTH while neglecting to include the classic End Of A Gun on their Gunfighter disc... arrgh!

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

The MGM version of The Night of the Hunter is in fullscreen 1:33:1 format. I believe the film's original aspect ratio was 1:37:1(even though IMDB says 1:66:1). I would also like to have it in its original aspect ratio, but I don't imagine it will look much different from the MGM version.

Good timing for this thread to have been bumped earlier today -- see the link to a related article in today's L.A. Times:

There's far too much dead space watching it in Academy; Stanley Cortez's cinematography looks pretty damn good at 1.66:1, and it's not significantly 'tight' at 1.85:1. I'm positive it was framed for widescreen.

You're right!

Re: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: COLLECTOR'S EDITION

I've just watched the whole film again (I only meant to refresh my memory, but, well you know how it is...), and to double underline it, it looks absolutely spot-on at 1.85:1.

It is, of course, one of the finest movies ever made.
