Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

EDIT: Thanks to the moderator who moved this thread to the correct forum.

Let me start off by saying that I know there is a similar thread on the SD DVD forum. However, I don't want to clog that thread up with a Blu-ray centered post. Also, I didn't see a similar thread here on this board, but if this is redundant I apologize in advance.

I'm making this thread because I know that Warner representatives do read this forum to get some feel for what releases may have a buying audience. I also know that Warner is unlikely to release any non A-list catalog titles, especially as we get to the 1970s and earlier, for a variety of reasons, from having HD ready materials to simple cost-to-profit ratio. So my list will only include a few such films no matter how much I'd like to see more (gotta keep it realistic). I also won't list titles already announced that I will gladly purchase, such as Ben-Hur, Gone with the Wind, etc.

That being said, of my 85 BD titles I own, a full 25% (28) are Warner releases, with 13 of those being catalog titles over 10 years old.

So, here's what I would purchase:

Titles I already own on DVD and would purchase again on BD:

Amadeus (preferably with both cuts of the film)
Barry Lyndon
Bringing Up Baby
Captain Blood
Citizen Kane
Contact
Dial M for Murder (if possible, with alternate 3-D version)
Doctor Zhivago (1965)
Empire of the Sun
Giant
The Goonies
The Green Mile
The Iron Giant
JFK (with both cuts if possible, though I'd rather have the Director's Cut)
King Kong (1933)
Lolita (1962)
Malcolm X
Maverick (1994)
The Mission
Mystic River
Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Rebel Without a Cause
The Sea Hawk
Singin' in the Rain
Strangers on a Train
THX 1138 (would like both versions of this film, but I know Lucas won't allow the original to be released; good thing I like the new cut more)

Titles I do not own on DVD because I'm holding out for BD:

All the President's Men
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (Uncut)
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
The Big Sleep
The Magnificent Ambersons (please release on BD when the eventual DVD comes out!)
Matchstick Men
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Network
The Outsiders (both cuts if possible)
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
A Perfect World
Poltergeist
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (both cuts)
Ryan's Daughter
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (both aspect ratio versions of the film)
Stagecoach
White Hunter, Black Heart
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Hope this gets the attention of someone with influence!

Some nice titles there Brandon...

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

I like most of those movies, but I am afraid most are years from being released on Blu-ray. If you will be happy with three or four from each group, you might see that many of them sooner.

I don't expect them all at once. Maybe 50-75% of these over the next 4-5 years would be awesome.

Very good lists. Jim K, I remember reading that Clash of the Titans was geared up for a release this Fall, or Winter.

I was wishing for a new disc of Jeremiah Johnson. Now even more with the passing of Sidney Pollack.

And hell yea, it CRIES for Blu-ray!

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

My WB wish list. Gee, they own so much stuff that if just half of what they've brought out on DVD is redone for Blu-Ray. Let me put it this way: anyone wanna buy a kidney?

But for starters:

King Kong (1933)
Bringing Up Baby
Boys' Town
The Adventures of Robin Hood
(1938)
Gone With The Wind
The Wizard Of Oz
The Maltese Falcon
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Now, Voyager
Meet Me In St. Louis
National Velvet
I Remember Mama
Adam's Rib
Singin' in the Rain
House of Wax
(1953, in 3-D, same for the next two)
Kiss Me, Kate
Dial M For Murder
Rebel Without A Cause
East of Eden
Giant
The Pajama Game
Gigi
North By Northwest
Ben-Hur
The Music Man
What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?
My Fair Lady
Doctor Zhivago
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Ryan's Daughter
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
What's Up, Doc?
Cabaret
The Man Who Would Be King
The Wind and the Lion
Network
The In-Laws
(1979)
Fame
Poltergeist
Victor/Victoria
National Lampoon's Vacation
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Follow That Bird
(at this point, it being a long shot, I'd settle for an OAR DVD)
Hairspray (1988, I take it they'll be handling New Line titles from now on)
Quick Change

That's all I can think of, because I'll be up all night.

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

That's a great list, Brandon. I would probably buy the majority of those if they were released.

Matthew, your list is also full of must buy titles. I would love KING KONG and HOUSE OF WAX(along with the original MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM) on BD.

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

There's alot of stuff from Warner that never even got second issus on sd-dvd.

Arthur
Eraser
L.A Confidential

Warner's been a great HD studio so keep em coming WB.

Yeah I remember that also, but I thought they were doing a remake and that's why they listed it.

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Didn't buy Maltese Falcon reissue because I'm holding out for a blu-ray version.

Ryan's Daughter is no masterpiece but I would definitely buy that one.

I'd pick up about 90% of the rest of Brandon's list too.

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Between Brandon, Matthew, and Jim - there is enough there (at the current catalog release rate) to take up the next 5-10 years. And what's sad is- given the limited replication and/or yearly release slots available, combined with poor catalog sales so far, It's probably going to take a good 10 years to get many of these.
Because of that I wouldn't be unsympathetic to seeing Warner hew to a basic set of priorites for these
For example

#1 Priority- Films that either badly need a remaster on DVD, or that haven't even been released in SD yet. Amongst these some I want to see the most are:
Arthur
Logan's Run
Outland
Badlands
Giant
Cabaret
The Year of living Dangerously
Far From The Madding Crowd
Barry Lyndon
A Little Romance
The Music Man
Night/House Of Dark Shadows
Showboat

#2 priority - Films that have watchable SD DVDs, but are wide aspect ratio and thus could make the most use of the higher res available:
Ben-Hur
Contact
Rebel Without A Cause
East Of Eden
Soylent Green
Mister Roberts
Contact
Where Eagles Dare

#3 Priority- Technicolor academy ratio and 1.75/.85 AR films.
The Exorcist
many MGM musicals
Gone With The Wind
Mosquito Coast
The In-Laws

The lowest Priority I would reserve for B&W Academy Ratio films. I own Casablanca, and yes it is better than it's sd counterpart- but the sd version was far from unwatchable on an HD display- and has anyone ever compared the HD of Casablanca with the SDs of The Bad And The Beautiful or other high grade discs of that nature?

Even though these are my guiding criteria, there are titles like The Exorcist, Wizard Of Oz, LA Confidential that may not fit the highest priority category, but that I don't currently own for whatever reason and am most eager to see again. But in general I would be happy to see them use these criteria.

I do notice that older B&W films look pretty good upconverted compared to say more recent films which really are a mixed bag. I really do think they do less tinkering and processing on B&W films.

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Give me Amadeus, Casablanca, North by Northwest, Maltese Falcon, The Wizard of Oz, King Kong, L.A. Confidential, Badlands, and, perhaps of most importance, Barry Lyndon, an SD 4:3 1.66:1 is unacceptable for this film's cinematography.

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

In addition to many of the previously listed titles, I'd also buy:

Klute
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)
Mean Streets
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Guilty By Suspicion

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Hang all that stuff!

I want The New World in high def. Malick for the win
post #25 of 40

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Perhaps a double feature of Safety Last and The Freshman (from New Line's licensed Harold Lloyd films). Both look fantastic in 35mm. They're silents, but I think people would be pleasantly surprised by how good 1920s films can look in 1080p (or 1080i since both require slightly slower fps).

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Titles I already own on DVD and would purchase again on BD:

Contact
Gladiator
Jurassic Park Trilogy
The King And I
Alien Quadrilogy
Back To The Future
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Star Wars 4-6 ( Both OTR & Special Edition, would prefer OTR over SE)
Star Wars 1-3
Lord Of The Rings (I own both OTR and EE cuts on SD-DVD but would prefer to buy the EE cuts only on Blu-ray).
Star Trek Motion Pictures 1 -10
Lethal Weapon 3-4 (And that is not to say I wouldn't repurchase 1 & 2 on Blu-ray if the came out with lossless audio).
The Quick And The Dead
X-Men 1 & 2
Titanic
Dances With Wolves
Tombstone
All 20 James Bond Movies
Armageddon
The Core
Braveheart
A Fistful Of Dollars
The Good The Bad And The Ugly
High Plains Drifter
American Graffiti
The Crow
Logans Run
Poltergeist
Highlander 1 & 2
Enemy At The Gates
Das Boot
Saving Private Ryan
Band Of Brothers
Sphere
Apocalypse Now
Jaws
Its A Wonderful Life
The Siege
Pretty Woman
War Of The Worlds (1953 & 2005)

Titles I do not own on DVD because I'm holding out for BD:

Amadeus (preferably with both cuts of the film)
Captain Blood
Citizen Kane
All the President's Men
The Magnificent Ambersons
Matchstick Men
Poltergeist
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (both cuts)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (both aspect ratio versions of the film)
Dial M for Murder (if possible, with alternate 3-D version)
Doctor Zhivago (1965)
Empire of the Sun
The Green Mile
The Iron Giant
JFK (with both cuts if possible, though I'd rather have the Director's Cut)
King Kong (1933)
Maverick (1994)
The Mission
Mystic River
Rebel Without a Cause
The Sea Hawk
Singin' in the Rain
Forrest Gump
The Godfather
Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Ben Hur
Lawrence Of Arabia
Gone With The Wind

Schindler's List
My Fair Lady
Psycho
Rudy
Doctor Zhivago
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Beatles: A Hard Days Night
The Birds
Glory
The Music Man
True Grit
The French Connection

Currently I purchase very few SD-DVD's as most titles I would prefer to own in HD. I hope that the studios will see that there are many customers who feel the same way. And this might push them to restore more movies and give them an HD transfer on Blu-ray, preferably witout DNR.

Hope this gets the attention of someone with influence!

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Many great choices here folks, and I would certainly buy many of them.

I must jump in here and second (or fourth?) Logan's Run. A favorite from childhood and now an adult "guilty pleasure". As Paul Scott mentioned in his post it is among the Warner Bros. films badly needing a remaster. I bought the MGM DVD back in 1998 and have been waiting and waiting for a remaster and new transfer on SD DVD but I guess it's just not coming.

When BD arrived I thought now maybe I'll get a new version, and in hi-def no less, but still no news. With the remake on the backburner it may be years before we get a new transfer and disc for the original film. Please give us Logan on Blu Warners!

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

Two things to add to my original post:

1. Since we know from websites such as The Digital Bits that the BD versions of The Adventures of Robin Hood and Casablanca are done, please schedule their release. I will gladly pick them up immediately!

2. I neglected to list any New Line titles, but seeing as how Warner is now more hands on, here's what I would purchase:

About Schmidt
Dumb and Dumber
The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
The Lord of the Rings
The New World
The Wedding Singer

And what the heck - I'll even send HBO a shout out, even though Warner doesn't decide for them:

American Splendor
Band of Brothers
From the Earth to the Moon
Three Amigos

Re: Attn: Warner - These are titles I would gladly purchase on BD

And now, let me list those titles I previously considered unlikely to get a Blu-ray release, because they are "non A-list catalog titles [especially from the] 1970s and earlier."

I would gladly buy them, though.

Titles I already own on DVD and would purchase again on BD:

Akira Kuroawa's Dreams
Angels with Dirty Faces
Astaire and Rogers: The Complete Film Collection (or at the very least: Shall We Dance, Swing Time, and Top Hat)
The Buster Keaton Collection (or at the very least: The Cameraman)
Foreign Correspondent
Libeled Lady
Little Caesar
A Night at the Opera
The Public Enemy
The Roaring Twenties
White Heat

Titles I do not own on DVD because I'm holding out for BD:

Bachelor Mother (please release on BD when the eventual DVD comes out!)
Bad Day at Black Rock
The Big Parade (please release on BD when the eventual DVD comes out!)
The Crowd (please release on BD when the eventual DVD comes out!)
Dave
A Face in the Crowd
Gentlemen Jim
Gold Diggers of 1933
