Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

Great news! Plenty of double-dipping ahead, though. I have about zillion releases from BU...

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

Admittedly, I don't know much about the particular titles listed, but it is good to see Blue Underground in the Blu-ray Disc game nevertheless.

I guess like Matt, I am most intrigued by the Argento films, especially The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. I realize The Final Countdown has a lot of admirers, just look at this thread alone, but I can't say the film did anything for me.

What I am most excited about however was news that the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is getting a BD release this September. That warrants another thread me thinks.

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

I'll definitely pick up The Bird With The Crystal Plumage and Maniac and probably The Stendhal Syndrome.

Change "Maniac" to "Two Evil Eyes" and that's pretty much me. I'm another excited about "Final Countdown as well. Now, I need them to announce "The Black Cat" and "Q" and it's pig in s**t time....Oh Yeah!

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

Oh. The Stendahl Syndrome. Excellent.

While quite a number of Argento fans hate this movie, I think it's one of his best and the existing American DVD is pretty poor. This could be great.

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

Wasn't MANIAC shot in 16mm? Would this benefit on Blu-ray?

Yes it would. I transfer home movies to video, and when I started using an HD camera at 1080 30SF, the difference was apparent on 8mm, Super8 and 16mm transfers. Of course this does assume that the film was shot in focus to begin with .

There's more of an advantage to transferring 16mm to HD than DV *cough* 28 Days Later *cough*

The original Troma DVD was poor, but the Blue Underground 2-disc set is really good

I only wish that STENDHAL had been remixed in English using the original production audio tracks. The "vocal artists" who replaced most of the voices in that film- in particular Asia Argento- are really terrible.

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

I really hope they announce Fulci's Zombi 2. That would look absolutely amazing in HD, especially if it was sourced from the remastered transfer (which I assume it would be).

So far, Maniac and Bird are definite purchases.

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

I'll definitely be buying the all the Argento ones. They're not really my faves, but I'd love to see Susperia, Opera, and some others hit the format and I want to show some support.

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

Great news that they're releasing to Blu though there's nothing I want in this batch (but that's okay).

Looking forward to their Spaghetti Westerns, Hammer Horror (if they now have the rights) and Deep Red if they still have the rights (they don't with Suspiria).

I didn't watch the video so I missed that they were releasing Two Evil Eyes but I'll pick that up too. Thanks for spending another $20 for me.

No problem These releases look so good I may break down and buy a few others. Between BU and Anchor Bay, there's a shit load of stuff I would love to have on Blu. Argento, Soavi, Bava and Coscarelli....and then some!

Re: Blue-Underground announces its first titles for Blue Ray

Personally, I'd like to see them release some Hammer titles on Blu-ray.
QUATERMASS AND THE PIT
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT
DRACULA-PRINCE OF DARKNESS

would be a nice start.

Does anyone know if any recent restoration work was done for City of the Living Dead?  There is an upcoming Blu-ray release of this film but my enthusiasm for it will be diminished considerably if it turns out to be the same transfer currently available. This is a very grainy film already and won't translate well to 1080p if it isn't cleaned up a bit. Threre is supposed to be a great-looking Italian disc floating around but I'm not region-free (yet) so this won't benefit me besides I think Region 1 deserves a better presentation of this film. A new transfer and new extras would be a first day purchase for me.

The so-called "great looking" Italian DVD of CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD has been DNRed to hell and back, resulting in a pasty-looking image that barely resembles film.  One thing Blu-ray has shown me is that, as a format, it handles grain a hell of a lot better than DVD can.  Film grain on Blu-ray looks like organic film grain-  on DVD it looks like nasty, clumpy noise.

Thanks for the update, Michael. Eventhough Maniac is a disturbing movie, it's also very powerful with a great performance from Spinell (and some great Tom Savini effects work too).

Slasher fans shouldn't forget that The Prowler is coming to Blu-ray in about a month.

I've never been a fan of THE PROWLER so I'll probably pass on that one but I can't wait for MANIAC.  It's not for everyone but I find it to be a mini-masterpiece.  I might rent THE PROWLER though just to see how much Blu-ray would help such a low budget film like that one (haven't seen their CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD yet).

DEEP RED, INFERNO and CAT O'NINE TAILS are apparently coming next year.

I'm not sure who owns SUSPIRIA now but I watched an edited version that they have on FCM (and Netflix streaming) that makes the old Anchor Bay disc look poor.  The Stereo soundtrack is also rather amazing so hopefully this will eventually come to Blu (uncut of course).

I hope you're not playing with us, sir.

I am frothing at the mouth for The Prowler.  For my money, it's easily one of the best slasher flicks ever produced (albeit with a sluggish middle).

I'm at work right now and can't get to the website to get the link but Fangoria has the story.  Apparently Lustig announced them a couple weeks back.  Of course, who knows about delays and all that good stuff.

I want an uncut TENEBRE but that appears to be a title no one can do right.
