Now I almost regret, that I spent 11$ to that bare bones HD DVD-version... I also have the DVD. Damn.

This page has been updated with full specs and extras.

All of the Jack Ryan titles will be getting lossless TrueHD 5.1 and the special features from the previous SEs (featurettes in SD, trailers in HD).

I also purchased the HD-DVD version for around the same price. I also figured the format war was going to go on longer than it did. So I picked it up just to have it in HD because I didn't now how long I would have to wait for the Blu-ray. But I am weak so I will be double dipping on this title when it comes out on Blu-ray. Heck it has DTS-HD MA and I would rather have that then the DD+ on the HD-DVD. Even though the video on the HD-DVD does look good.

Mmmmmm how many time can I buy Top Gun?
VHS (1)
Laserdisc (2)
DVD (1)
HD-DVD (1)

coming soon to my HT....... Top Gun on Blu-ray with DTS-HD Master Audio.

As far as the Jack Ryan titles go I might buy a few of them anyway as they should still look better than the SD-DVD transfer. And with Dolby True HD lossless audio they should all sound great.

Actually the war was over when I bought "Top Gun" in HD DVD.. Those cheap HD DVD prices after that kinda fooled me... Well, I might pick up the BD-version from some sale later on. The movie is not THAT good.

DVD Beaver has their review up for "Patriot Games":

Patriot Games - Blu-ray Harrison Ford Anne Archer

Guys, seriously the PQ on them is amazing compared to the DVD's.
That's nice, but why are you using DVD as your reference for quality? In the age of hidef, the reference should be FILM, not a compressed video format. I think what Gary said in post #8 and 11 is a more accurate assessment.

So it looks like it's been remastered for Blu-ray and looks pretty damn good

Re: Paramount to release the Jack Ryan films on Blu-ray 7/29

I got the BD of Patriot Games and I've been working on the eventual review of it. I'm not quite as impressed as Gary seems to be. This is part of my video review for it:
"Patriot Games exhibits better color fidelity and slightly better detail in the blacks (over Red October). Sharpness and detail are improved as well, but the picture shows far more edge enhancement than the previous picture. It also seems to be very “hot” and looking more like video than film leaving me to wonder how much DNR was applied to the image."

I broke out the HD-DVD version, which is the same MPEG-4 transfer, to compare the two and they are virtually the same, except the HD-DVD doesn't seem quite as "hot" as I noted above. This may just be the video processing of the Tosh XA2 and the PS3? I was surprised Gary didn't mention the EE which was specifically apparent in the establishing shot of the house leading up to the scene when the IRA tries to kill Kevin O'Donnell.

I had begun working on the HD-DVD review of the box set last year but stopped working on it after Red October since there was going to be a re-release with the extras. Although that never happened I still had Red October's video review done, comparing its look to Top Gun HD-DVD where it looked good for a film of this vintage. I'm waiting on the BD's of the other Ryan's now, so we'll see how they look. I just so glad Paramount put a DTS-MA on the BD of Top Gun

I haven't been able to rely on DVD Beaver since I read their review of Gangs of New York, so I'm not terribly surprised by the inconsistencies you noted Pat.

What was your review of PQ & AQ for "RO"?
Thanks.

Re: Paramount to release the Jack Ryan films on Blu-ray 7/29

This was still a work in progress at the time.

"Red October looks about as good as most pictures of this age and it kept reminding me of the transfer for Top Gun, in that it looked quite good, just a bit dated. Colors are inconsistent, sometimes being washed out, other times exhibiting exceptional saturation, but this is in line with how the picture was shot. Black levels are good but they could be better, not showing too much detail. I found the picture to look flat, with little to no dimensionality to it. This was especially true in the underwater scenes where the effects show their age and leave us disappointed in the picture. Sharpness and detail are inconsistent as well: the scenes on the American ships look sharper, where as those on the Red October look duller. I do wonder if this is a stylistic choice on the part of McTiernan and Cinematographr Jan deBont, seeing as most of the American ship scenes are far brighter than those on the darker, redder cabins of the Red October. The picture is free of any dirt or debris and I noticed little to no edge enhancement."

I only had notes so far on the audio.

I have never bought this. Hard too believe, huh?!?!
That may end, soon!
