I think that nobody could afford to wait any longer before releasing FOTRE - Samuel Bronston already was in deep financial trouble and there was a rush to make some money back with Fall.

Maybe they wanted to save a few bucks and preferred prints that were usable in all 70mm theatres and/or they did not see Fall as a viable movie for the cinerama theaters.

In any case all anamorphic prints would all be pink by now, same as the flat prints and if somebody would be striking any new prints today it would mostly be shown at large fomat festivals and special screenings and it could be the first print that is true to the aspect ratio of the movie as it was filmed.

I guess we should better go to the Fall of the Roman Empire thread with this

Surely far more than one print was made. It was widely shown in the UK(where I saw it in"Cinerama") and I am pretty sure throughout the rest of the world. As for the 70mm prints of TFOTRE being compromised as a result of being"reduced", there was no sign of that in the prints I saw at its premiere run and then reissues at London's NFT. As I have said, it was the sharpest 70mm I have ever seen, and I have seen quite a lot.

With regard to that one print I was replying to RAH as he mentioned the Ben Hur re-release that was done with only one "new" 70mm print.

The high quality of the original release prints of FOTRE is not something I would deny. Your impressions regarding the quality of the FOTR Empire prints are shared by many others and it is a testament to the high quality of the original photography and to the facility that did the 70mm prints that they looked even better than prints from movies shot flat. I wonder if it would have looked even more stunning in Ultra Panavision 70 !

I hope they redo both The Longest Day and Patton in the near future, but I am not going to hold my breath to long.

Re: A few words about...™ The Longest Day -- in Blu-Ray

The Longest Day has, at long (!) last, been released on Blu-ray in the U.K. (as an exclusive by Play.com). I've read all the comments about perceived excessive use of DNR but on my 42" plasma screen the film looks absolutely magnificent and, of course, vastly better than the DVD. I'm therefore glad to say that I am perfectly happy with it.

Re: A few words about...™ The Longest Day -- in Blu-Ray

I intend to get it when it is on sale (the USA version). Whether it is excessively DNR'd or not, it is still the best it has looked (IMO) on home video. The 2-disc SD DVD set I have is just godawful.

I was hoping it'd be on sale for Memorial Day. Maybe there will be a deal on it on June 6?

For me this is one of the worst blu ray releases out there, now it's the 50th anniversary this year so i'm wondering, since Fox are reported to be re-releasing Patton and fixing the issues with that disc, will they also be re-releasing The Longest Day, this time with actual detail in the image and film grain intact. ?

:EDIT: i hit a 6 instead of a 5.

Early last year, there was talk about a new, remastered PATTON Blu-ray that was supposed to be released later in the year. I haven't heard a word about it since then, let alone anything about THE LONGEST DAY.

Perceived? Really? You're serious when you say that?

That post is coming up on three years old. He may have reconsidered by now!
