On Wall Speakers

I'm new to the board.

I've read the discussion concerning in-wall speakers, and the consensus seems to be that they are a less desirable option.

One benefit of in-wall speakers is clearing floor area. Also, for some, they are more pleasing to the eye.

What about speakers that are intended to be mounted on the wall for use as rear surround speakers for a high end home? Presumably these speakers have to be smaller due to weight considerations and aesthetics.

Is this a good option, and are there any that you would recommend?

Re: On Wall Speakers

On wall speakers can be great, average or just plain crappy. It depends on the speaker and the listener. The best advice before making any speaker purchase is to go and audition not only the speakers you want but a bunch of others. That will give you an idea about how different speakers sound. Take your own movies/music because that is what you will be most familiar with.

Based on that, not all speakers are properly designed to be mounted on or near a wall. The crossover must be tweaked to compensate for an over emphasized midrange that will result. I have already started some DIY towers/on-wall speakers for my theater. The Dayton Home Theater is the basic design except the enclosures are 7" wide, 4.25" deep and 48" tall. The front L & R will be towers. The center will be mounted under my screen on the wall, angled slightly up. The side and rear surrounds will be wall mounted as well.

Can I get any guidance on brands to look at?
