Bose Acoustimass Question

Hey guys, I just bought a used Acoustimass 5.1 system for a GREAT price. I also have a Sony Receiver in that same deal. My question.. I have heard many terrible things about BOSE, but can I purchase a receiver/speaker combo for around $300 that will be any better than the BOSE? Also, I am not real happy about the bass that the Acoustimass module creates (it is non-powered.) Can I purchase a separate powered sub to connect to my sub output on my receiver and have both running??

For $400 you can buy an Onkyo HTiB that is so much better than the Bose that I am prohibited by law from describing it. Not really, of course, but the analogy is not too far fetched. Bose makes very expensive mediocre stuff.

I was tempted to say, "A GREAT price? How much did they pay you?"

So, to answer the second question, if the receiver has a LFE (Sub) output, you can absolutely use it in conjunction with the Bose system. Set the crossover at a good point for the Bose, which is probably around 150Hz and use the entire Bose set as regular speakers, set to "Small" on the receiver. As you have discovered, the bass module is not even remotely a sub, but it is absolutely necessary for the system.
