I am also curious about 36. #3961 #74 PRODIGY (Final B&W episode) 6/24/65 6/9/66 (38) This is the last episode shown that featured Alice Pearce . It says filming was completed on 6/24/65, almost a year before it was broadcast. The teaser sets the show up as a flashback where a non pregnant Sam remembers how she helped Glady's brother when she was still pregnant. I assume the teaser was filmed later than 6/25/65. Also the tag scene where the Gladys and Abner along with Sam and Darrin watch TV appears to be in the present with Sam not pregnant. When could the tag scene have been filmed ? Alice Pearce had died on March 3, 1966. I assume they saved the show because they wanted a late season show with Alice Pearce. The flashback was needed to explain why Sam was pregnant during the show six months after Tabitha was born. |
Funnily, Dick York actually appears in "Samantha's Power Failure," although just barely. The opening shot of Sam and Darrin lying in bed is from season three's "Witches and Warlocks Are My Favorite Things," which was also used in "The Trial and Error of Aunt Clara." You can't really tell it's him there though.
I think the tag scene from "Prodigy" was filmed in June 1965, but was conveniently shot in a way that didn't make Sam look pregnant. I haven't seen it in a while, but I think she is leaning forward towards the TV so that it's not obvious.

I had to watch Season 7 again. How much footage was actually filmed in Salem... alot of it looks like it was filmed on a soundstage with the Salem backdrop... The first two episodes really aren't part of the Salem Saga are they since they just talk about going...According to Harpies they were filmed after the Salem Episodes... Does anyone know why the Kravitiz's and Darrin's parents were not in Season 8? I can't wait to see the European Business Trip Episodes I haven't seen those in ages...You know I was thinking since BW was contracted for a 9th season if ABC did plan it to go on and Liz didn't come back who they would have cast for her/Samantha? Me and my roommate were discussing that today... the show would have died... I think if they would have left it on Thursday nights it would have done better and a 9th season would have been done...

Every time a season comes out I take Herbies book and rate them. I think the reason I like this episode is because I just love Gladys. She cracks me up the way she gets so hysterical and have you guys noticed Abner in Season 7? He let his hair grow and looks like he got Dentures.

Speaking of "Darrin Goes Ape", my avatar reminds me of Serena in this episode...the avatar is actually a publicity photo from Paula Abdul's "Spellbound" album but I think she looks very much like Serena does from this shot:

I think "Darrin Goes Ape" is all right, but it's not one of the best by any means.
And have you seen Abner when he shows up on "Tabitha" approximately seven years later? He's a full blown hippie! He's got a long beard and hair!

You are right about the first two episodes having no Salem footage. "The Salem Saga" does have a lot of bluescreen work done especially when we see Sam, Durwood and Endora driving around Salem and stopping in front of the Witch House, though all that footage was shot while the cast and crew was in Salem in the summer of 1970. The footage outside the House of Seven Gables was shot on location but the interiors of the Ho7G was shot at the studio as it looks nothing like the interior of the real place.
"Samantha's Hot Bedwarmer" features just a little footage from Salem, and that is when they show the police station.
"Darrin on a Pedestal" features the most on location footage. Pretty much every scene with the exception of the hotel interior was shot in Gloucester, at the Gloucester House restaurant or at Magnolia Castle and the Immaculate Conception Church shown at the first, which is just down the street from the Hawthorne Hotel.
"Paul Revere Rides Again" only has a bit of footage of the old North Church.
"Samantha's Bad Day in Salem" features much from the Ho7G outdoors as well as the Roger Conant Statue, the Nathaniel Hawthorne Statue, some of the Salem Commons and the Immaculate Conception Church though most of it was footage shot without the actors really being there.
And "Samantha's Olde Salem Trip" doesn't have any.
You should really get Peter Alachi's book about the filming in Salem. It's very detailed and has lots of never-before-seen photos and info available at Bewitched in Salem!.
Re: Bewitched Season 7
Hi David, I bought Paula Abdul's "Spellbound" when I was in school and you know she looks a lot like Serena... hence that may be why she named the CD "Spellbound" and using Serena's look... alot of stars loved Bewitched...Ellen, Rosie, and Oprah...to name a few
Oh David, I notice this Season Abner started letting his hair grow and I believe he got Dentures...In earlier seasons he looked as if his top teeth were missing... I really am going to miss them next season ... I think they just add so much to Bewitched... I love it when Abner tells Gladys..."Time for your Medicine" LOL

Very impressive! They do look alike very much. Serena's hairstyle was very avant-garde!
Re: Bewitched Season 7
About Irene Vernon & Danny Arnold. It makes no sense to me about about those rumours as if this was so then she would have gone with him after the first season instead of staying on for season two.
As well if this was so then she would have continued on with her career as an actress with Arnold or elsewhere, yet she never worked again & went to the real estate field right away instead.
Danny Arnold was Producing non-stop after he left Bewitched so the opportunities for her to continue working as an actress with him would have been boundless.
As well her sister has stated publicly that the version about the real estate was the fact, so i think what some have said about this is not accurate about her.
I have never heard anything about any ill will towards Irene Vernon by Elizabeth Montgomery & until i hear otherwise from a credible source i shall regard all of this as an urban legend.
Likewise Danny Arnold left to create his own production company rather then just work for Screen Gems, not because he was fired or forced out by anybody.

Re: Bewitched Season 7
I know this may sound like a weird question, but if you watch the episode "Darrin on a Pedestal" there is a scene when Samantha is talking to an elderly man in the garden about Serena and the Seaman. In this part, is it me or is it raining on the man? LOL, it looks like it is, but it may be raining in the trees behind him... you have to look very close, but I swear it looks like rain. Anyone know about this? ThanksRe: Bewitched Season 7

I haven't checked that scene out, but I do know from reading the book, "Salem's Summer of Sam", that it rained a lot while they were filming in Salem and they had to adjust the schedule.
Re: Bewitched Season 7
Are any of you guys getting excited for Season 8? I guess now since we have 7 of the 8 seasons, I am getting very anxious for the last...Also have you guys noticed in Season 7, that Samantha is becoming more independent on helping Darrin? I counted at least 8 times that she took credit for his work and I am so proud that she is. You can tell the times were changing during that time. From 1964 through 1968 she was very humble to Darrin, then she began to stand up to him more (not saying this in a bad way), but it shows how times have changed in just a few short years. I think that's why I love the show because it shows so much in our American History. I did one of my Sociological Research papers on Bewitched and Women's Rights. Truly Amazing!!

Also if you click on your own name you'll get an option to look at all the threads you've posted in, just in case you can't find one againIn Season 7 related news, the Fisherman's Memorial has been chosen as the landmark to adorn the new Mass. quarter by the people of MA. It beat out tons of other landmarks like the House of Seven Gables and the USS Constitution and one writer feels it may be because of it being featured on BW

And speaking of this episode: DARRIN ON A PEDESTAL, have you noticed the voice of a narrator on the ending credits (24m04s) saying:
| "Air transportation and promotional consideration for location shooting in Salem provided by American Airlines. IT'S GOOD TO TRAVEL AMERICAN AIRLINES" |
I've never heard that before in syndication.

I noticed that too, that was cool!
Re: Bewitched Season 7
Yea, that was very cool... Wasn't that pretty much the only entire episode filmed in Salem? Was the restaurant they ate at actually in Salem or was that a sound stage?Re: Bewitched Season 7
I think maybe some of the interior restaurant shots were filmed at the studio, though the Gloucester House's current owner Mike Linquata can be seen with I believe his wife sitting behind Serena and the Fisherman. And most definitely the hotel room scenes were filmed in the studio.I thought it was cool that the end credits would include that American Airlines credit though in the original airing the credits play but when the announcer comes up the picture changes to a still of an airplane and it has words printed that say something like "It's nice to fly with American Airlines" or something like that. I wish that would've been on the DVD.
Now about another episode, the two part "Mary the Good Fairy" episodes. Back in 1999 the "Muppets from Space" movie was released by Columbia Pictures. In the ending scene, there is a group of people gathered to witness the landing of an UFO and they are all dressed weird. One of the people looks to be wearing the Reducelator! And it could very well be the same one as BW was produced by Screen Gems which later became Columbia. Here is a screen grab from the movie:

Re: Bewitched Season 7
I have two items to post about, both inter-related and related to this season.First of all, the BW Collector (Mark Simpson) has posted a promo video for the upcoming BW Fanfare in Salem!
Like I mentioned before I attended the first Salem convention in 2006 and it was AWESOME!! I don't know if I'll be able to attend this year right now, but I'm sure trying to make it work!
Secondly, I became a member of the BW Fanfare and received my FAN[fare]TASTIC Membership packet this week! Mark has made the BW FanFare Membership Club to help with the expenses of putting on such an affair. For an annual fee of $25.00 you get the following:
- Discounted Fan Fare Registration Fees
- Discounted Group Accommodations (if available)
- Discounted Group Event Admission Tickets (if applicable)
- Membership Packet
The packet is THE coolest! It comes with:
- an official membership card which when presented at Witch Tees in Salem (they sell all sorts of Salem related shirts and trinkets including a BW in Salem shirt), you will get a 15% discount!
- An 8 X 10 photo of EM as Samantha. This month it was from "A Vision of Sugarplums", a portrait with her wearing the pointy hat and pointing to her nose, in black and white.
- A copy of the pilot script that was signed by AM, EM, and DY.
- Volume One of the DVD of the Month. This month it has the two Ben Franklin episodes UNEDITED (unlike the official DVD release by Sony) with the sponsor openings and the "Darrin is perplexed..." commercial from the Third Season.
- BW Fanfare Newsletter
- BW Fanfare flyer to copy and distribute.
- $75 in 'Twitch Bucks' to redeem at the Fanfare for great merchandise. The 'Twitch Bucks' each look kinda like Monopoly money but cartoon Samantha is on the $1.00, cartoon DY is on the $5.00, cartoon DS on the $10.00 and cartoon Endora on the $20.00. Now maybe you weren't aware of cartoon Endora, but apparently Hanna-Barbera was going to incorporate her into the opening credits and awhile ago there was a cell from her scene on eBay. This is what is used on this funny money.
I would say that the merchandise you will be able to purchase with the Twitch Bucks is going to be awesome, if any of the previous years is an indication. That first Salem trip had some of the books originally released when BW was on, an Ideal Samantha doll, and I bought a card that was only released in London. Last year, there were signed photos from the cast, mugs, and other items. The best of all though, were the prizes in "The Twitch is Right" game like a multi-region DVD player and S.7 from Japan, a toy 1965 Chevy car and the best prizes, which I happened to win, were the diamond heart replica necklace and the 1965 Ideal Samantha doll in the replica box! Mark goes all out for these events, so you know you're going to have a good time!
Anyway, you can find more info about all this at his website: www.thebewitchedcollector.com

Re: Bewitched Season 7
I have a question for all you specialists of Bewitched. I'm warning you; I do not have an answer on it but I'd like to know your thoughts on that. Why, do you think, season 7 end music theme is truncated at the end of the theme. This happens from the second episode of season 7. On the first episode, the theme is complete with all music notes. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Re: Bewitched Season 7
As this phenomena happens in S.7 I thought I'd post about it here......you know those stairs in the kitchen that go to nowhere? It's cause they're not real stairs as plainly evidenced in "Darrin Goes Ape".

I really like the kitchen from Season 7 on with the exception of those crazy stairs!
Re: Bewitched Season 7
Oops! Double posting...When the drunk croses the sidewalk from Hawthorne Hotel and sits on the red fire hydrant, you can see what looks like the Common fence across the street. this scene is actually filmed at the Ranch. The fence next to the Park at the Ranch looked a lot like the fence at the Salem Common.
The Fisherman's memorial is in Glocester. When Darrin is standing on the "base" of the memorial, this "base" is a few hundred yards from the memorial.
The Paul Revere horse statue in the show was a fake one at the Ranch, not the real one in Boston. You can see Sheila Sommer's house in the background.
When I visited the House of 7 Gables, I noticed an actual bed warmer hanging on the wall.
The movie "Hocus Pocus" is also filmed in Salem and at the Ranch. Sheila's house is painted white. In one scene, the kids are walking through the Salem Common. Next they are seen walking past the "Chistmas Vacation" Griswold house at the Ranch. Were they magically transported from Salem to Burbank as they were walking?
There's a scene in "Small Soldiers" where the boy is riding his bike on "Wisteria Lane" (Universal Studios), and then he's suddenly riding at the Ranch. Or when Pee Wee Herman flies on a bicycle at Warner Brother's main studio lot, and suddenly he's at the Ranch several miles away.
If you want to see 1164 at its "ugliest", watch "Moving" starring Richard Pryor.
Thought it was neat to hear music from one of my favorite movies.

There is a new book out by Salem, MA resident Peter Alachi that details the time that 19 year old Salem State College student Gary Richard spent as a stand-in for the Fisherman's Memorial statue in "Darrin on a Pedestal". It is an awesome account especially because Gary is not credited in the episode but he has a lot of behind the scenes photos and letters from the cast which he shared with Peter earlier this year.
Gary Richard got to experience a dream many of us wish we could've. You won't regret purchasing this book. It can be found at http://palachi.com along with Peter's other books about the entire trip of the cast to Salem and the dedication and controversy surrounding the Samantha statue.
This book, and Gary discovering Peter this year, is serendipitous as this week happens be the 40th anniversary of the airing of that particular episode.
Here is a piece of recently discovered behind the scenes footage from the filming of "Darrin on a Pedestal" taken by Pierce Sears, a resident of Rockport, MA, when he happened upon the BW cast and crew filming. EM was in character as Serena and the footage is only one minute twenty seconds, but it's AWESOME!!! This footage was recently discovered in Mr. Sears collection as he has been restoring all his 8mm film, of which apparently he has a great collection. The footage was screened at the Gloucester Community Cinema forum last year. The part about the lost footage begins at 7:48.
Sony should definitely contact Mr. Sears for this footage and include it in a big redo extra filled release set of BW!
