According to IGN, Natalie Portman has been cast as Jane Foster in the upcoming Thor movie.  I like her and all, but I guess this means the modern world will be a significant setting for the movie.

I had heard that was to be no Don Blake.  Is that no longer the case, then?  To me, that's a positive thing.  Donald Blake =

Sounds like a good cast and crew shaping up. I thought Hemsworth was one of the best things in (the excellent) Star Trek film.

His son would have made a good Thor.  But I'm down with Stellan in this.  Nice cast so far, assuming Hemsworth is the goods.

Stuart Townshend has been replaced on the film, according to

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/10/stuart-townsend-replaced-_n_417890.html

Joshua Dallas will be replacing him as Fandral. Tough break for Townshend, who, according to the article, was also replaced at the last minute by Viggo Mortensen in the Lord of the Rings movies.

From the article, "Irish actor Townsend, 37, best known as the boyfriend of Academy Award winner Charlize Theron"

Poor dude, he'll forever be known as just "the boyfriend of Academy Award winner Charlize Theron."  Must be something wrong with him to be suddenly dropped from two big movie projects.  Guess he'll be living off Charlize for a while.

I read that he was 6 hours late for a screen test.  Branagh probably doesn't have time for flyweights.

"Must be something wrong with him to be suddenly dropped from two big movie projects."

He was dropped from LOTR because Peter Jackson thought Aragorn should be played by an older actor.  That's the official story anyway...

Interesting casting news

Quote:
The character of Agent Coulson is the latest to appear in multiple Marvel productions as the comicbook company's film division preps for the eventual production of "The Avengers," which unites Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor in one pic. Marvel has been keen on brokering deals with actors to make sure auds will recognize characters when they crossover and appear in its other films.

Gregg's Agent Coulson also will return in the upcoming "Iron Man 2."

Well, then Jackson shouldn't have cast him in the first place. It probably clashed between them, or had 'creative differences'. I have to say that Viggo Mortensen was perfect for the role, so I'm glad Peter changed his mind.

"Well, then Jackson shouldn't have cast him in the first place."

People reconceptualize while making movies all the time.  As things come together, they see the consequences of their decisions, some are good, some are not.  You expect Jackson to be infallible.

I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt until I hear something concrete.

Oh, no, I don't expect Jackson to be infallible at all. From hearing some of the ideas he had for LOTR, the movies could've been a lot worse then they are now (Aragorn fighting Sauron, for example). I just commented on the fact that the 'official' explanation for Townsend's replacement was that he was too young for the part, and that's something a director would notice before he'd cast an actor, I would think.

You may be forgetting that the character was not a regular human.  He was very old, but didn't look it.  That's the sort of thing that I think could throw a director off, the character having to look young but convey the wisdom of great age.

Quote:

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige tells SFX Magazine (via Superhero Hype) that he hopes that their upcoming "The Avengers" is more than just a "team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers".

In the process he let slip that the Hulk, a character that hasn't been as firmly linked with the film as Iron Man or Thor, is a definite for the project. He also hasn't ruled out a potential second "Incredible Hulk" film with Edward Norton, saying "That would be post-'Avengers,' if it happened... I think there's a chance. It's certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can."

One of the biggest questions with "The Avengers" is the still lingering question of mixing heightened reality-based heroes like Iron Man, Nick Fury, Hulk and Captain America with the outright mythological fantasy hero Thor. Feige was adamant it won't be a problem, saying "we're doing the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski 'Thor.' We're not doing the blow-the-dust-off-of-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library 'Thor.' In the 'Thor' of the Marvel Universe, there's a race called the Asgardians and we're linked through this Tree of Life that we're unaware of. It's real science, but we don't know about it yet. The 'Thor' movie is about teaching people that."

There will also be elements that will move forward with Marvel Studios unprecedented plan to create a unified universe of heroes and stories that spreads across films, including the upcoming Captain America movie in 2011 and "Iron Man 2," which arrives May 7 as one of the most anticipated movies of 2010.

"It's going very, very well," Branagh said Wednesday. "We're in New Meixco now where we have a contemporary Earth part of our story. I guess we're two-thirds of the way through the story and at this stage of the game what's surprising and delighting me is the way the cast, the ensemble, has fused together. It's kind of an interesting combination of very young and very experienced people and the double-up of that, it seems to me, is there is a lot of fire in the movie. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it doesn't try to be too solemn.

Q: Why aren’t you in Thor?

Sam: I have no idea. I'm not in charge of making those decisions. I thought I was. They said I was in the trades, and I was like, "Oh, I've got a job!" And then, I called my agent and she said, "Nah, you're not in it. They misprinted." I was like, “Well shit, they need to pay me just 'cause they put my name in it."

Iron Man 2 After Credit Scene Revealed

Somehow, a video of the highly sought after secret scene from Iron Man 2 ended up on YouTube, it was quickly taken down of course, but many of us got a chance to glimpse it first. Here is the description. MAJOR SPOILERAGE, do not make the jump if you want to be surprised at the end of the movie..

If you haven't seen it, or don't already know, here is a breakdown of the scene:

We see a car pull up in a desert setting. The license plate is revealed as 8RE 2Z1. A man exists the car and stands at the top of a hill looking down at something. Its SHIELD agent Coulson and he is watching a lot of exited activity buzzing around a large crater in the ground. He turns away and speaks on his phone..

"Sir, we've found him" He says.

The camera pans back to the crater and reveals Thor's hammer Mjolnir in all it's cool, faithful to the original comics, glory!

In fairness, this wasn't too much of a surprise. Screen writer Justin Theroux pretty much gave away the easter egg when he said this..

No, [the easter egg's] got to be very specific because you can’t…if it was all of a sudden Tony opens a tool box and there’s a friggin’ hammer in there, you can’t bone the next guy. You know it’s not like…you want to create possibilities. So that’s a very thought out piece. If the shield all of a sudden just falls out of the sky, whatever it is, whatever that thing is, you want to be very specific about it.

Anyway, still mighty cool I'm sure you will agree.

SHH: We’ve finally seen you in the costume. How did it feel to have the Thor costume on – the very first time, and for four months?

Hemsworth: [Laugh] Yeah, right! Okay, exactly – I put the thing on and said "It’s not very comfortable, but it looks amazing, so it’s all good." And then a couple of weeks in, I thought "It’s getting more and more uncomfortable," and at the end of three, four months it was a pretty difficult thing to wake up and put on every morning. But it’s sells such an image in the picture. It does a lot of the work for you.
