Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct "Thor," the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige's choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn't really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on "Henry V," a bloody telling of the British king's conquest of France.

Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare.

Marvel will set a distributor for "Thor" shortly.

"Thor" comicbook adaptation, penned by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

Marvel will self-finance the film via its $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch. Marvel used that coin to fund both "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" and will do the same for the "Iron Man" sequel that has director Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. returning.

The "Thor" negotiations come during a resurgence for Branagh. He's currently drawing raves on the London stage in the title role of "Ivanov," and he'll next be seen acting in the Richard Curtis-directed "The Boat That Rocked" and the Bryan Singer-helmed "Valkyrie."
Branagh is repped by Endeavor and manager Judy Hofflund.

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

According to Harry Knowles, the current Thor script has no modern day portion so no Donald Blake storyline at all. Which is fine with me - establish the character in a more classic setting, then bring him to the modern day in The Avengers or some other film.

Never say never but I find it hard to believe that Kenneth Branagh has interest in directing a Thor movie.

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

It's an odd choice, but it's worth remembering that just because Branagh has done a lot of Shakespeare doesn't make him stuffy; indeed, part of the reasons he does them is to try and demonstrate just how fun an accessible those plays are (he promoted Much Ado as comedy first, classic second, and made Love's Labors Lost into a musical). And even if he's not terribly interested in Thor itself, his last few movies have sort of crashed and burned: Sleuth disappeared, The Magic Flute hasn't shown up in the US, As You Like It went straight to HBO. Marvel is likely getting a very talented director for a discount price because he needs to raise his profile a little bit.

Or it could be like David Gordon Green directing Pineapple Express: There may be a long-repressed need to blow some shit up finally getting its release.

Ang Lee made Hulk. Same thing. But hopefully in a good way, and not a long boring way.

The problem I've had with Brannagh is that his movies are often too bombastic, with all the characters seeming to have this compulsion to run around screaming all the time. I remember his Frankenstein adaptation being especially funny for this. Then again, this might be a good quality for a superhero movie...

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

Personally, I love the choice. He's shown that he can be a great director (Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet) and he's even had some experience with action. I'd love to see him make a comeback. I just hope he still has it.

"BY THE BRISTLING BEARD OF ODIN!"

I think he'll do fine.

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

He might not have directed any "fantasy" films per se but by his acting choices there seems to be some interest with Wild Wild West and Harry Potter to his credits.

Not so much any more. I wouldn't mind them dropping all the thees and thous, as JMS has done. If it is truly set in past Asgard, I wouldn't mind them consulting with Matt Fraction--opposite to my position on his being consulted for Iron Man. He actually has done a smashing job on the Thor stories from that era.

I'd prefer they talk to Walt Simonson. His Thor credentials carry much more weight with me than Fraction's

Marvel Studios and Paramount Extend Distribution Agreement - Superhero Hype!

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios today announced an agreement under which Paramount will distribute Marvel's next five self-produced feature films on a worldwide basis. The deal, an extension of the original agreement made by Brad Grey when he arrived as CEO and Chairman of Paramount Pictures, includes theatrical distribution in foreign territories previously serviced by Marvel through local distribution entities (Japan, Germany, France, Spain and Australia/New Zealand). The distribution pact capitalizes on Marvel and Paramount's successful efforts with Iron Man, which has grossed $574 million worldwide for Marvel.

The highly anticipated live action releases include Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010), Thor (July 16, 2010), The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011), and The Avengers (July 15, 2011). The distribution agreement also includes Iron Man 3.

"Coming off of 'Iron Man's' incredible success this summer, we could not be more excited about extending our relationship with Marvel," said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures. "Marvel's iconic brand, its popular characters and its proven ability to create compelling and visually spellbinding films complement Paramount's great history of filmmaking. We look forward to a long and successful run together."

"Paramount is an excellent partner and an outstanding global distributor," said David Maisel, Chairman of Marvel Studios. "Through our experience on 'Iron Man,' Paramount has demonstrated a passion and ability to release Marvel properties theatrically, allowing us to focus on making great movies for the largest audience possible."

Marvel's Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Jon Favreau, was distributed by Paramount earlier this year and was one of the top films of 2008. The DVD, including a version in Blu-ray, will be released on September 30, 2008.

My girlfriend was his (HHH) prom date in high school. I'll have to see it 1000 times over. If he gets the role that is.

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

Well, I guess I'm really more interested in seeing him taken far away from Iron Man. Favreau has already met with him several times, and I think Fraction's doing a bad job on that book. I wish he could be removed from that to work on something he can do better. JMS has done even more interesting things with the character, but he's not working in the suggested time frame. Not that he couldn't.

I don't even know that Simonson is in the entertainment field at all any more.

Yeah, he still works regularly. He drew an Elric miniseries for Michael Moorcock a couple of years ago, and he's the writer on DC/Wildstorm's World of Warcraft series.

So that's finally official now? It's about time.
And yes, Thor should be a very bombastic, over the top comic movie. That'll scare off any regular viewer who thinks every comic book movie should be realistic . Wouldn't know how they would make this one realistically anyway.

IESB.net - Movie News, Reviews, Interviews and More! - IESB Has Got Updates on Marvel's Big Screen Adaptation of THOR!

Quote:
We are now getting word that there has been an addition to the end of the Asgard driven Thor story that very much gives credence to further Thor stories and how Marvel plans to bring everything together for the Avengers film due out in 2011 a question even Tony Stark himself pondered, Downey Jr. said to MTV, "The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is [director] Jon [Favreau] was very certain that 'Iron Man' should be set in a very realistic world. Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion."

A reliable source tells the IESB that the character of Donald Blake has been added to the end of the script. Let me reiterate that he wasn't there before, the script was set entirely in the land of the Norse Gods.

But, we also got some other information about the villain in the story, Thor's brother Loki.
Loki isn't a very nice guy. He's quite treachorous actually and fancies himself the God of Mischief. He is repeatedly trying to get rid of Thor and seize the throne of Asgard for himself. One thing led to another and he ended up being the God of Evil. What will his role in Marvel's live action adaptation? Probably something similiar, we know he's the main baddie.
Who does Brannagh want to bring this evil character to life? Try Josh Hartnett

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

Don't know the guy at all, and I don't think I can judge him from that one pic properly. Looking at his face I'd say he would be better as Captain America, though. But Marvel is probably going with a well-known actor for that role.

Re: Thor (2010 Marvel film) developments

Eh. Can't say I'm against him since I haven't seen much of his work. Didn't particularly care for him in Star Trek. My only problem is that he isn't as exciting as some of the other names that'd been rumored for the role.

Profile on Marvel Studios with Big Updates from Kevin Feige FirstShowing.net

Quote:
Feige also confirmed that Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were officially cast in Thor. He spoke very highly about both actors, but focused more on Hiddleston, who plays the villain Loki. Feige explained that finding a classic villain that could be sustained over the course of many films and provide the hero with a challenge while also being a mirror of that hero himself was very tough. "Loki has those aspects." He also did say that Thor takes place on both modern Earth and other worlds like Asgard, confirming what we heard the other day about Donald Blake not being a part of the story and the setting be primarily Earth. And lastly, he said that director Kenneth Branagh would not let them use any classic Shakespearian dialogue like was often used in the comics.

We already know that Iron Man 2 is up next, then Thor, then Captain America, then The Avengers in the summer of 2012. Feige said that they're "ordered this way for a reason." And confirmed that Samuel Jackson and Scarlett Johansson as well as Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are signed on for multiple movies or "multiple franchises," further extending that hint that Loki will be a villain who shows up quite often. Feige kept saying often that he'd love for audiences to have the same experience that comic book readers have - where characters make surprise appearances almost out of nowhere in issues they pick up.

Comic Book Resources > Cup O' Joe: Joe Quesada Talks Thor, Iron Man 2

Quote:
Jonah Weiland: Joe, we’ve spent the last couple of days talking Marvel’s publishing plans, so let's move to the world of Hollywood, an area Marvel has been staking a claim in pretty dramatically over the past few years. Let’s talk about the day you spent with “Thor” director Kenneth Branagh. You went on a a creative retreat with him, did you not?
Joe Quesada: It’s funny that you’re bringing this up as I’m leaving for LA on Monday for the week. I’ll be immersed in Marvel Hollywood business. Someone tell Scarlett I’m on my way! [laughs]
But yes, I sure did. We had one big creative meeting with the Marvel Creative Committee, which now works on all of our movies and I have the honor to be a part of. We sat with Kenneth and discussed the "Thor" movie and the overarching story of what that's going to be, just to give our input before anything was put down to paper by screenwriters.
And it was one of the highlights of my time here at Marvel because not only did Branagh sit there and give you the story beat for beat, he and [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige formed a great team. It was performance art. Kevin would give us the establishment of the shot and the situation: "Here we are. We're in (take your pick of location). And here's Odin and he’s coming up to (pick a character)." And then Kenneth would come in and give you the color commentary. "Odin has an air of majesty to him" and he'd act out the Odin part or the Thor part. So we sat there and literally got a three-hour one-man show from Kenneth Branagh. It was fantastic. People pay a lot of money for that kind of performance by one of the world’s greatest living actors.

There is much more
