Really?!?!?! Is Nuno involved? I remember on that VH1 show a couple of years ago where they tried to get '80s bands to reunite, Extreme was the ONLY band that refused. Everyone except Nuno was cool with the idea, but they all said "don't bother asking Nuno." They went to ask Nuno, but he refused to talk to them or even appear on camera

If they got back together, that would rock!

Got 'em. I have Transcendence on CD. You can probably get it from an Amazon seller or something.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

I just got the new DOKKEN cd "Lightening Strikes Again" and this could have been recorded in the days of "Under Lock and Key" and "Back for the Attack". The sound is right out of the 80's. Way to go DOKKEN! I was disappointed with their albums "Dysfunctional" and "Shadow Life" as they were trying to go into a new direction with the music on a whole. Just too far off the original sound of what I've come to know the band to be. Over their next three albums "Erase the Slate"," Long Way Home" and "Hell to Pay" I was teased with a couple of tracks on each that were reminisent of the classic sound, but, the rest of those albums, while good, left my DOKKEN craving unsatisfied. "Hell to Pay" was even touted as the Album for the fans. No sir. "Lightening Strikes Again" is the one for the fans. If you listened to DOKKEN in the 80's and liked them, this cd needs to be heard by you. No if ands or buts. Check it out!

Ockegham, the first concert I ever went to was Iron Maiden's Powerslave tour. Accept opened for them. Awesome show. I saw them again on the Somewhere in Time tour but it wasn't the same. Powerslave is a truly excellent album.
What did ya think of ACCEPT? I own several of their cds. I always like feedback on this band because you either love or hate em'.

I really loved Mr. Big's first album, just a raw guitar album with great emotional vocals at times by Eric Martin. Second album was more melodic but had a great tune on it which is still fav of mine, Green Tinted Sixties Mind.

Yeah Man I got their second cd a couple years ago from Suncity Records. I've been meaning to get the third release compilation from them. Now, the new cd, I just can't get into for some reason. It's too different from them. I've got Mr.Big too! Wow, it's nice to see I wasn't the only one following this stuff. Any one here remember RIP or Kerrang magazines? Before internet I relied on these to keep me updated. Not to mention Headbangers Ball every Saturday night. I watched it all the way back when Adam hosted, but, Rikki Ractman really made it great every week. Faster Pussycat anyone?

Yes, Nuno is involved.

Anyone buy guitar magazines, at least in the '80s? Invariably, I'd read the interviews and think, "Oh, man! This is going to be the greatest album ever," and then I'd flip to the reviews in the same issue and it would be slaughtered. The most notorious was White Lion--Mane Attraction. The interview made it sound awesome, but the review said, "Your little sister's going to buy it, so borrow it from her if you really want to waste your time." The magazines always did stuff like that.

Powerslave was the album that got me into music, period, let alone metal. It really blew my mind.

Now THAT's a statement us "older" metalheads love to hear. I've loved Maiden since the first album, which I bought as a "blind buy" in 1980(?), and I'll never forget the pivotal moment of my life when I dropped the needle on Side One, Track One and "Prowler" changed my life forever.

"Powerslave" was a monumental album for me. I was able to proudly declare "Look how far they've come!" They'd made it through numerous line-up changes, political and media crucifixion (over nonsensical "satanic" charges), and the total ignorance of American radio to become one of the biggest and most revered acts in the world. The 13-minute "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is one the greatest songs ever written...

Another huge moment in my life was hearing the "Restless and Wild" album for the first time. I already owned and enjoyed "Accept" and "Breaker" (the two albums before "Restless"), so I HAD to own "Restless and Wild" even though it was only available on German import vinyl at the time (Ten bucks was HARD for me to come by in the early 80s).

The "heaviest" metal bands at the time were probably Motorhead and Venom (yes, I'm a fan of those bands, too), but nothing could have prepared me for the moment "Fast As a Shark" blistered out of my speakers for the first time. "Power Metal" was truly born. This was like Judas Priest on speed.

As far as people "loving or hating" Accept, I believe the animosity toward them began with the follow-up album "Balls to the Wall." While it's probably second-only to "R&W" in the Accept canon musically, I think the lyrics and cover art did them a lot of damage. The band didn't have a great command of the English language, so they roped in a "friend" of theirs referred only to as "Deaffy" to write the lyrics. It was revealed only a few years ago that "Deaffy" is in actuality Gaby Hauke, the band's manager...and a woman (she's married to guitarist Wolf Hoffmann). The problem was she wrote the lyrics for one of the heaviest bands in the world at the time...from a woman's perspective. Now, I'm all for women in heavy music, and I love lyrics from a woman's point of view, but things can get a little skewed when those lyrics are being sung by a diminutive German man wearing camouflage.
Men in metal aren't supposed to sing lyrics like "By looking in his eyes something turned me loose in this hot night" and " I can feel your sex winding up the girl in the red dress" (both from the same song, by the way). The album cover and the song title "London Leatherboys" didn't do them any favors, either.

Sorry for rambling, but I'm a walking metal almanac, and can't help myself...

I'm not sure where I heard this but the singer in Accept was gay which gives those lyrics new meaning, as well as "get your balls to the wall man" and a whole new meaning to London Leather Boys. Weird now how many metal guys were, like Rob Halford of Priest, not thats there is anything wrong with that...
I am a hair band fan from way back but never got into the harder bands like Motorhead or Wasp, Deep Purple's "Burn" and Black Sabbath's "Paraniod" were my first real albums, followed by Rainbow. I'll admit i've not bought anything new in a while except for the new Def Leppard (which is ok but sounds too pop-ish) but I'm stuck on the Boneyard on XM.
My problem nowadays is that i'm trying to re-create the "glory days" when every song rocked but I find most new metal lacking, Metallica's ST. Anger just sucked compred to the older stuff.
I still find myself listening to the old stuff, you just can't beat the guitar riff of Ratt's Lay It Down and for those of you who wrote off Winger, get "Pull" which did not sell but contains their heaviest material to date, I still work out to it.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

Who's the guitarist in Dokken these days? Did they get George Lynch back?

In 1987 you couldn't pay me to listen to White Lion. But now Wait is one of my all-time favorite sing along in the car tracks.

I'm actually kinda curious to hear what the next Metallica album (if any) sounds like. St. Anger wasn't great, but it seemed like they were at least trying for the first time in many years.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

It's a guy called Jon Levin. Lynch is still solo.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

All I can tell you about Jon Levin is he used to be the guitarist for the band WARLOCK fronted by female metal vocalist Doro. Now all the sudden here he is in DOKKEN. As hard as it may be to believe once you here Lightening Strikes Again you won't miss Lynch. Not meant as a stab at George just the sound is intact without him.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

Don't forget Night Ranger. The guitar solo in Don't Tell Me You Love Me is still in my top ten favs. However, I can't hear Sister Christian without thinking of Boogie Nights.

Great news about Extreme...didn't know they were making a comeback. I love III Sides to Every Story.

I like "sing me away"and "you can still rock in america" by NIGHT RANGER. The EXTREME news is good to know. "Tragic Comic" was the last album I bought from them. Gary Cherone's solo effort was pretty good as well. He was never meant to front Van Halen anyway. EXTREME getting back together is going to be great.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

Man, I can't believe this. Four hours ago I was playing "in the dark" from Billy. Me and my girl met at a old fashioned diner where she worked and one of the songs on the jukebox was this. I played it every time I went to see her there. Funny you even brought it up. We spin that every once in awhile for the memories. Great, great song and way ahead of it's time musically.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

Great song. I love Billy Squier. They say (and "they" includes Billy himself) his career was severely damaged by that Rock Me Tonight video, but I love the song. I managed to miss that video until the YouTube era.

Udo the lead singer for Accept has been married since 88, and he has two kids a boy and a girl. The boy is in a band playing drums.
As far as hari bands I only like Faster Pussycat, L.S.D, and some Ratt, I'm more of a Priest, Accept, Maiden, Motorhead, Warlock, Misfits, W.A.S.P., and Wendy O fan.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

I'm very fond of 1980s metal but not the hair band stuff (Motley Crue have some good songs though). Bands I like include Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Dio, Anthrax, Testament, Queensryche, Metallica's first four albums and King Diamond.

I'm also fond of bands like Pantera, Sepultura, Iced Earth, Dream Theater, Opeth, Mastodon, Children Of Bodom, Lamb Of God, Death, Morbid Angel, Alice In Chains, Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah, Down, High On Fire, Ministry, Suffocation and Machine Head.

We're probably getting OT with the prog rock stuff, though.

When I saw Genesis above, I began thinking of a lot of other bands (and individuals) that I love and which one could discuss for hours. Some that came to mind were Gentle Giant (I love the Octopus album), Sid Barrett Floyd, John M. and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Other Music, Renaissance, ELP, Rick Wakeman, Tull, the Moody Blues, and tons of others that I listened to back in High School. I had to learn some of their work, and believe me it wasn't easy!

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

I saw Accept in 84 opening for Kiss and until I saw Death in the late 90s I always considered them best band Id seen live up to that point.

Simply awesome live. Id seen alot of concerts, but that band at that time always stood out to me as the best 50 minutes of live performing Id seen.

I still love their old music though I admit to not hearing anything theyd done after Udo left the band.

Best live performances Ive seen:

-Death in 97 (Im biased because I love this band so much)
-Snot in 98. Had to be seen, no words can explain this show. Their first record -touring with Max Cavaleras Soufly. It was incredible to watch. Ive never seen a band put so much passion and raw energy into a show before. Outstanding live sound and a "funness" that cant be compared to out of the 100 live shows Ive seen.Unfortunately they only made one record. Their vocalist Lynn Strait was killed in a car wreck. Fantastic!!!! live band. I remember it like it was yesterday and its a very fond memory. My brothers seen most of the shows I have and this is his fav live performance.
-Mike Ness/Social Distortion. Ive seen these guys a few times in the past few years. Ill go anywhere to see them play. A great performer and a great band. Amazing live.

Id add Accept to that list as the 4 best live bands Id ever seen.

Id give my right nut to have seen Voivod in their prime in the late 80s

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

I am a huge fan of 80's Hard Rock/Metal. It is what got me through my high school years. Here are my favorites that were on constant rotation in my Walkman up until I graduated in 1986:

Accept - Restless And Wild, Balls To The Wall
Anthrax - Spreading The Disease
Def Leppard - High 'N' Dry, Pyromania
Dokken - Tooth And Nail, Under Lock And Key
Lita Ford - Dancin' On The Edge
Great White - Great White
Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind, Powerslave
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance, Defenders Of The Faith
Keel - The Right To Rock
Kiss - Creatures Of The Night, Lick It Up, Animalize, Asylum
Krokus - Headhunter
Metallica - Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets
Motley Crue - Too Fast For Love, Shout At The Devil
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman, Bark At The Moon, The Ultimate Sin
Quiet Riot - Metal Health, Condition Critical
Raven - All For One
Ratt - Out Of The Cellar, Invasion Of Your Privacy
S.O.D. - Speak English Or Die
Stryper - Soldiers Under Command
W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P., The Last Command
Y&T - Earthshaker, Mean Streak

I continued to follow and expand my collection of pretty much all the bands above as well as getting into Bulletboys, EZO, Enuff Z 'Nuff, Kings X, Queensryche, Guns N' Roses, etc. in the late 80's. I also got really heavily into Prog Rock and 60's bands like The Beatles, The Doors and The Who.

80's music will always have a special place in my memory though.

Re: Any 80's Hard Rock/ Metal Fans?

"It's a guy called Jon Levin. Lynch is still solo."

Lynchs singer is Andy Freeman, a friend of mine from high school.

Andy is a pretty great guitar player himself but seems to be sticking to singing nowadays.

Last time I saw Andy was in the late 90s and talked to him around 2001 or so. About 3 years ago a mutal friend told me he was singing for Lynch Mob I said "huh? How the hell did that happen?"
He was working for his father in laws company, got divorced, fed up one day packed his bags and headed out west. I think Andy met Lynch through his brother who had moved out a few years earlier.

You can easily find his myspace or clips of him on youtube under Andrew Freeman. He also has a side band with Vinny Appice(as well as a RATM tribute band)

BTW, I play in a band on friday nights and our drummer was a road technician for just about every metal band out there during the late 80s-late 90s. Incredible drummer. He has one bad knee, needing surgery but a few cups of coffee and it doesnt slow him down at all.

Oh yea and Mylan we were told by my friend years ago that Udo was gay Wolf Hoffman is one of my favorite guitarists and IMHO is really underrated.
